Hey guys, just wanted to tell you guys that I've officially switched to Chavant clay and sculpting has never been more fun for me. It's a trillion times better than super sculpey! I've also started working with Telescoping armatures which come apart at desired places to make molding easier. and they're also better for the modeling process. These are some pictures of the armature and the new sculpt I'm working on. Finally I'd like to tell all of you that if you haven't already worked with Chavant NSP... I highly recommend it!

Chavant eh? I'm wanting to try something other than my SS. Do you bake it just like SS, or is there some other process? I've mastered the SS, and anything better than it would be great. What's the consistency like?

Juicy: I'm discontinuing any sculpts I was doing with Super sculpey, the difference between the two is way too big for me personally. I enjoy Chavant too much. Here's the link you asked for.
http://www.chavant.com/index_main.shtml

Scotty: Chavant clay works the opposite to sculpey. It hardens with cool temps. and softens with heat. The clay you see here in the box lined with foil is for the purpose of heating it with a 60w bulb. The idea is that while you're working you constantly trade a slice of hard for a soft one.
Chavant comes in hard medium and soft. I use Soft NSP. It also works better for molding because you can wire cut different parts off at the joints you created with the telescoping armature. I recommend this stuff a million times over sculpey.

Nice looking armature you got there and the sculpt is looking good so far as well. It lokos like the process detailed in the Gnomon sculpting videos, am I correct?

You should check out Mark Alfrey's sculpting tapes too.

he has one on molding sculptures I just got which is fantastic.
This proicess can be used to cast your oil clay sculpts in plastic, far more desirable than keeping them in clay form.

The sculpt is shaping up nicely as well. The back and stomach in particular looks like it has some nice anatomy coming together.

Are you going to try and mold the piece when you are done or keep it in clay?

Thanks Scott. I hope to eventually mold it. I'm going to study that process carfully first.

Here are some progress photos of some areas that I've detailed so far. The photos of the face show the initial volumes I've applied so far.

I am curious where you got the alcohol torch I see in the background?

Thanks,

Scott: There's a really cool store in North Hollywood called Carter Sexton. I get everything there. They have all the clay and all the tools. That's where I got the torch. If you're not in California, I think you may be able to order it online. Here's a link to their website.
