Hello everyone!
This is my sketchbook welcome!
I'm 16 now 17 years old and I always liked to draw but I got "serious" about art one year ago. Since then I try to improve my artwork and get better at what I love. ;)
I like animation, Illustration and comics!

Please take a look and feel free to critique me I'll appreciate it.
Thank you for looking!

PS: Recent stuff is on the last page
I started this sketchbook when I was 15 but didn't post much, you can see some of the stuff on the first page.
Most of the posts are from this year.

I guess my scanner hates me

Alright, this one is something I did today because I had no ideas and since I can't draw feet to save my life I decided to learn that today (I drew this from my anatomy book)

(I don't think anyone will read this but whatever)

Okay, this idea was for 3-4 days in my head and now I decided to draw it, it was a little challenge for me, I think I'm going to color it digital later

Not bad stuff so far, very cartoony and stylized. Ive seen the style in your imagery quite often, you've obviously took something from invader zim, maybe edd ed and eddy along with a few older cartoons. Its good that you're mixing them together. Im guessing youre into animation?
However these all have roughly the same body type, try exaggerating characters features. Like give one of them huge arms and torso, or a odd nose.

Hello,
thank you very much for looking and commenting and for the critique.
Yes, it's very "catoony", lol. But no I didn't take anything from Invader Zim or edd ed and eddy because I never watched them (okay I watched 3 episodes of IZ aaa).

It's more from Spongebob and Flapjack, and then I evolved it into something of my own, and yea I took also something from the old cartoons. :)
Yes, I love animation, ahaha.

Thank you for the critique, I'm gonna try to do that! :-D

I found in this Thread:
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=191482
a cool list:
Learn the anatomy of the nose :•( and nobody will ever accuse you of being like manga again.

Draw the following noses into your notebooks from google images reference: Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson, Julia Roberts, Vigo Morgenstern, Alan Rickman, Telly Savalas, David Niven, Maria Bartiroma, Marilyn Monroe, and Dean Martin.

Post them in your sketchbook.

And even when I'm not the OP I decided to do that because it sounded like fun:
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad206/IQuail/nasen-1.jpg

Also I tried to do what Nonobot told me, but it didn't really work, here are some sketches:

But I think I found something...

Okay, I was playing a little with shapes(body and face)and thinking a lot about it and drawing (but I'm not gonna post everything here because most of it is shitty) and I came up with this... thing... uh...

I like it.

Keep it up, you have the right idea playing with shapes like that, shape design is very important =)

Check out this podcast that Steven Silver did. He's talking about a lot of things that helped him invent people from his head and manipulate shapes more.

U48YQsqov7k

Also when using color I suggest you push the values more. The one you posted is looking very grey. I don't think you will mind I did a quick paint ova to show what I mean. Generally have either a lighter background and a darker character, or a darker background and a lighter character. My shadow shapes look bad but I think my point came across...

Cheers!

Hello,
first: Thank you for looking and commenting. Thank you a lot.
The video was very interesting to watch (or better to say, listen to). I'm gonna check his channel out!

Of cours I don't mind!
I'll keep it in mind and try to do it like you did, it looks really good, I want my coloring to look like this! °U°
I'll try it out in my next digital practise drawing. Digital art is for me like a big mountain and I'm still at the beginning, aaaa. But I really want to learn how to do that (and also different traditional coloring!).
Thank you!

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright, some new stuff, lol.

This one is because I wanted to draw and color something with colored pencils (<3), was fun. Those are two different drawings trown together.
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad206/IQuail/loulz.jpg
Also: The girl in the pink dress is a redesign of my old character (one year), the character was baaad. BAD. But now I like how she looks (she is a villain 8D)

And I found this blog (thanks to CA <3):
http://theartcenter.blogspot.com/2010/04/making-faces-out-of-shapes.html
and I really wanted to try that out, so here:
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad206/IQuail/yesyes.jpg
It helped me to "lose" and get a little away from the faces shapes I always do, great practise! I'll do that a lot in the future + it helped me to find some new designs and stuff for what I am working on.

Boy, I didn't post for a while, mainly because there was nothing "worth" posting.
I'm practicing anatomy (still looks horrible, lol) with this cool site:
http://www.pixelovely.com/tools/gesture.html
yea, and I'm practicing coloring with colored pencils (and I got copic markers ciao, practicing how to color with them, too)

here is my latest thing online (not a sketch, but I just wanna post something)

Alight, here are some sketches I like (practicing drawing humans, faces ect)
I drew them while looking at photos (I know not the best thng to do, but I can't do anything else atm)
I'll draw more humans and animals tomorrow, yay. it was fun!!

(the scanner didn't scan the shadows I made so I had to make it darker on the computer )

So, I got copic markers for my birthday (lucky) and I was practicing a lot since.
I also got some books about color theory, but they are not that good, and I'm trying to understand how light works.

Here is the few stuff I like (there was many more but... uh, not posting that D: )
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad206/IQuail/derporactice.png
Gotta practice more.... and I need to work on poses and stuff, uh.

edit: I also got the fun with pencils with Andrew Loomis book, I only read a little (got it yestarday) wooha helpfullll.

Reading the Loomis book, god I learned so much not only about drawing but also about how I was drawing ect.
Awesome books!

Ok, I wanted to practice drawing animals (especially cats) today, because I can't draw cats.
It turned out shitty.
I drew the skeletton to understand how a cats body works (and know I do), I didn't just drew the lines but tryed to understand everything.
Then I drew an owl, but it looks bad and the cats too. And then I was angry and stopped but I'm gonna try tomorrow again.
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad206/IQuail/catcat.jpg

Ok, then I read the Loomis book and practiced with two of my characters drawing expressions, I learned a lot and now it feels much easier to draw the same character more than once but I need to get better.
Ok then I wanted to try drawing poses, I now understand how running works but I'm too angry to draw more.

SO! Last week I finally decided that it's time for me to start drawing regulary from lifE!
And so it did!! Everyday (excvept Saturdays because on that day I work on my cartoon stuff) I sit down at 4pm and draw stuff in my room for one hour! I really wish to improve, I want to move on to humans and more detailed stuff later on.

I have drawn a lot, but I only post a few ones which I kind of like/okay with.

YEAH!! (sorry for shitty scanns)

NEW WEEK! MORE DRAWINGS!! MORE PRACTICE!!!

Okay, today I decided to try drawing tomatoes and color them with my pencils because I need to learn how to color(and draw LOL)... :I
http://i936.photobucket.com/albums/ad206/IQuail/practice_by_invisiblequail-d32wu1p.jpg

And here is the sketch I did quickly for this:

It was fun, but I still suck. I want to try coloring an apple this week, too.

InvisibleQuail
November 17th, 2010, 10:53 AM
So, one day ago I bought an apple and I wanted to draw it in color with pencils...
GUESS WHAT? I failed so hard, it was almost epic.
And then I deicded to first learn how to understand light... :I

So I did! (please note that the last one was the first one I drew that's why it's the worst, LOL)

Nice studies, keep it up! The self-portrait is not bad either. You can use more contrats with the shadows. When doing a self-portrait use a lighting that gives contrasting shadows (i.e a lamp directly lighting one side of your face instead of some homogenious reflected light). Observe these shadows carefully and draw them precisely.

2. Sketch: Yestarday I saw Aresa's Sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=189580) and I really liked how she does expressions and she inspired me to try and learn how to do expressions!
I'll practice more!

3. Sketch:

Hello! Thank you for visiting my sketchbook! :)

You've got a nice style going on. I'm liking the look of your characters. Great designs for them. Your life drawings are getting better as well. You seem kinda timid with the values (ex. self portrait) so really push those more. Those expressions are a great start! I'm so happy that I inspired someone, haha! You're doing a great job! Keep up the hard work!

Hello!
Thank you for visisting and your comment. :D
You are right about that I noticed it too. I'll try to work on it soon (will try to do it at the weekend)!! edit: I WILL work on that!
I noticed that SenEnd pointed it out too. I really need to stop being afraid of pushing the shadows... and start practicing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sketch 1: I want to get better and understand how faces/heads work and decided to learn that but I did not have enough time to draw a lot and finish it. I'll try to finish it at the weekend... and do some notes.

Sketch 2: Just something I did today, I did more but the others were uh... really bad. Not showing that, lol! But I kinda liked how this turned out... oh and I will try to draw the stuff I'm not good at too, like the feet and faces.

o-o awesome sketchbook you have here, its honestly just fun to look at with all the variety lol (I'm oo-ing at the pretty colors~). Also really like how you do use up the whole paper, since often times I see some sketchbooks with just a single figure or face on the entire page which just always seemed to bother me for some reason lol.

Definitely will be looking forward to see what you come up with in your next updates for sure ^^

And Thank you!! :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sketch 1: Finished the skulls from yestarday, decided to do them today and not wait till the weekend!
I'm starting to understand better how the human head works.

Sketch 2: Practicing values by drawing bananas! Still too afraid to get darker with the shadows. aaaaa.
Need more practice! Will work tomorrow on it more! 8D

Your characters have a lot of, character- keep it up!
The best advice i can give you is to draw constantly- from imagination and from life. Books and photographs can be useful, but there is no substitute for life drawing. If you like it, copy it until you assimilate it into your work.

Yes life drawings is fun, since I started doing it (hands, the fruit ect) I "feel" how I got better and it's much easier for me now to understand forms and shapes. Of course I still need to practice more.

@minamongoose: Thank you. i'll try to keep it up! :D

Your work is getting better at an exponential rate! Amazing figure studies! You have great line quality also! Very expressive gesture. I like how your experimenting with cartoons and fine arts. Hey IQ, neat work in here! I wish i had decided to get serious when i was your age, you've been up to some good solid progress in here! I like the energy behind your characters though it looks like you may rush a bit when it comes to the inking stage, a little more time planning where the final lines fall would make your drawings look 10x better. I like your use of color too, the onion and banana watercolors are fantastic!

Things are looking good, maybe think about diving into some anatomy studies when you feel more comfortable with your gesture drawing. other than that, i have no major crits, keep up the good work!!

Dude I should start using the mirror instead of drawing from the computer. Copying stuff from the computer is frustrating.

But I don't have a sketchbook, only papers and as you may know, drawing like that is too difficult, impossible for me. My last sketchbook is already filled but the kind of paper is too lame to try something else than pencils...

Anyway nice progress here! (http://www.adventuredad.com/images/feat080615jealous.jpg)

You are right about my "inking", they were just scribbels to get the idea down but now it will change! I'll do it and not only will the sketches look better but I will practice inking while doing it.

Also, good idea about the anatomy!

@CaptainBeefheart: thanks and Lol, stop baaawwwing like a baby and GO TO WORK. >:I
No excuses! You can draw on everything!

@Vay: No no no it's not "my styloooo~" I'll try it out and it's a good idea! Thank you. :D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, the last few days I had a case of teen angst so I was not very productive. But now I think it's over...it will change next week... I hope and school is starting.

Sketch 1-3: Anatomy studies about hands. I use the book "Anatomy for the Artist by Sarah Simblet", it seems very useful but it's not easy written (I like how she draws).

While I did them I didn't try to just copy it but understand what I am drawing.

Sketch 4: I drew my hands with bones.
I'll do more so that I understand everything better.

Sketch 5-6: Redrawing of the character in post 3 of page 1. Just for fun and inking.

@rumpenstiltzkin : Thank you! :D
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since school started I didn't have much time to draw, I did most of it in school, lol.
I wanted to do more light and anatomy stuff and try what Vay told me but I didn't.

Hope to have more time this weekend, but I also want to finish at least one stylized drawing... mhm I wish I had more time.

Sketch 1: Hands

Sketch 2-3: Drawings I did in school, maybe will do more.

Sketch 4: Pear, didn't turn out good. Next time.

Sketch 5: Working on story idea.

Sketch 6-7: Another story idea, the banana and onion will stay like this, the others not.

Sketch 8: Sketches for a drawing for my mom. Hope to finish it this weekend.

Sketch 9-10: Gesture drawings, these were fun to do!

But ok only two weeks with tests and then I can draw as much as I want for the next 9 weeks (but summer break only in one month)

@CaptainBeefheart: ?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sketch 1: This practice is from the book "Zeichnen" by Sarah Simblet (dunno english name sorry).
Only the first one is copied, the others are me in the mirror.

Sketch 2: My feet

Sketch 3: I want to learn how to draw environments since I will have to learn that sooner or later... and sooner is better.

But I couldn't find good refs online so I went out and drew a tree but it was cold outside today so I only did that sketch and made some reference photos and took a few leafs with me home.

Will go outside next weekend too. I hope.

Sketch 4: Leafs I took with me.

YAY!
Today was the last test sooo now I have a lot more time to practice drawing!
There is SOOO MUCH I want to learn!
Animals, expressions, landscape, anatomy, watercolors and many many more things!

I WILL WORK HARDER!

But now some artwork I did, the cartoon sketches are mostly from last week and to be honest I was not quite sure if I should post them since they are so rushed!

Sketch 1-8: Practicing characters and trying to "get them known" better and stuff.

Sketch 9: Drawing people in my class, kind of failing but ok.

Sketch 10 - 14: PERSPECTIVE! Finally practicing, I'm planning to get the book "Perspective! for Comic Book Artists: How to Achieve a Professional Look in your Artwork" because I heard good things about it and it looks like a fun read.
I didn't think it would be fun but it is!! I'm planning to really understand one-point P. and then move one to two-point!

The more I draw and practice the more I love drawing!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is only a bit of stuff I did.
I started doing some more muscle practice and birds(not done yet so not posting) but now I have a big problem, my wrist and part of my arm started to hurt and get tired fast I'm a bit scared and I don't know what to do.

I'm doing some exercises but they don't seem to help so I decided to stop drawing for maybe two days and not use my right arm. Maybe I will try to draw with my left arm... :(

rumpenstiltzkin
June 10th, 2011, 08:38 PM
love those birds! cool characters :)
a classmate of mine had the same problem, her arm and hand hurted so much she started practicing wiht the left hand and that was just some months ago and now she can draw fairly good with the left. altho i keep bugging her to have it checked up since it been for months but oh well.. practicing with the left hand can never be a bad idea tho :)

@rumpenstiltzkin: Thank you and thank you for telling me about your classmate. I may try to learn how to draw with my left...

I will go to a Doctor if it will keep on hurting but it seems like it's over atm.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Didn't draw much this week. :(
I'm afraid of making the shadows darker, Damn. Will probably do some studies this weekend... hopefully. >:I

Hello again! Awesome studies and characters! I really love the crow character! Lots of fun and so much personality. Your linework is getting better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, the last week was really bad-
I think I just needed a break from everything but I did draw everyday, just not as much.

I will really try to push myself the next week (this one) so that I get better and stop being lazy.
I'm so disappointed in myself for not doing much practice and work... grr

Here are only a few not so shitty things I did...

Sketch 1+2: Gaia Avi + some of the failure sketches I did, it's not like the drawing was important but I got so mad at myself not being able to draw it like I wanted to but then I managed it.

Sketch 3+photo: Life stuff of a retarded looking garlic(?). Doesn't even look like it because it's shape is weird, lol. But was good practice.

great hands really! also i like your character style alot, i like the guy with the mask and the girl with the armor! very cool :)

I am happy that you like my characters (and my hands) :D
But I don't think I will do anything with those two yet (because I got "better" ideas suddenly (better = ones I like more lol)).
Thank you for looking this often in my sketchbook!! Makes me happy!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This time no practice but stylized stuff! After doing stylized art I know that I really needed it, art is more fun again (not that it ever stopped being fun!)!

So since I suddenly have "better" ideas (for two stories) I decided to get to work and draw and design the characters.

Started with the first character Pauline. :)

Sketch 1: Pauline
Sketch 2: First sketch of her.
Sketch 3: Proportions
Sketch 4: Decided to change hair since I changed her personality a bit and the hair is more fun to draw lol
Sketch 5-6: (final design) Drawing more Pauline to get to know her :D

edit: After rumpenstiltzkin's comment I was thinking about it and it's true, I really (still) have a bad habit to rush so I decided to redraw/fix the rushed things!
Thank you!

rumpenstiltzkin
July 21st, 2011, 11:55 PM
i like the character studies you did, but at least the first few ones seems very rushed... just slow it down a little and be more careful with the lines and such, it make it look more appealing, even if its just a " study" and not ment to be a great peice of artwork...if you get what i mean, im horrible at explaining what i mean sometimes x(
keep it up with the updates! :D

i love your style :D. those crows are looking really good. studies are coming along really good. i think you should concentrate on getting the proportions correctly. because some of the studies have proportions off.
i see you hand was hurting. do you put pressure to your hand while drawing... like may be leaning on it?or may be the angle you draw is not comfortable for your hands. anyhow hope your hand is fine :). and left hand is not a bad idea either. its always good to start with it :P and have a backup plan . haha. hope to see more studies and more illustrations . really inspiring stuff :). thank you for sharing.

@sin eater: Hello! Thank you :)
You are right, I was looking back at the drawings of my brother and yes the proportions are off. Will try to keep proportions in my mind next time I do studies!

My hands seem to be fine now (lucky), it seems like they were hurting because I wasn't sitting "right" and my back was very stiff.

@rumpenstiltzkin: Thanks :)

I'm drawing! I'm drawing!
I got a bit lazy and I have stuff to do irl but I still try to draw everyday at least something.

Here are a few things I did recently and like enough to post here.

1: Yume Nikki FanArt I did a few days ago! God, that was a lot of fun to draw! :D

2: Ruby, she can see ghosts. A character I did for the 30 character challenge but I couldn't keep it up.

3: Monster design.

Sketch 3-5: Franken Fran FanArt
Sketch 6: Pyro FanArt from TF2! Good game, lots of fun!
Sketch 7-8: Robot main character(s), I practiced coloring with pencils. Those two are drawn in different colors because I wanted to experiment. But her original color comes close to the second picture left. :3c
Sketch 9: Present I am working on.

Your drawings have a lot of life and character. They're fun to look at! One thing I think you could work on is line weight. Your interior contours are looking a little thick, so when you use your exterior contours to convey distance (closer objects have thicker line weights, further objects have thinner...) the effect isn't as pronounced as it could be. You should have a look at some of Alphonse Mucha's work. I think his line style would suit your drawings!

Some more sketches in class. Drew people while they were writing a test.

My bird looked so cute and fat today, I just had to sketch him quickly.
His left foot is damaged that's why it looks smaller (we found him like this). He is so cute!

Zombie Nurse character DO NOT STEAL ORIGINALU!!!1 just kidding ;) she is a really old character created when I was about 12/13.
Wanted to draw her again.

And also some jellyfish girl sketches.
She is a lot of fun to draw and it was relaxing drawing with colored pencils.

At first I felt bad today but after drawing I feel much better.
