This is my long journey to improve my art skills, and i appreciate any crits i can get. I started this sketchbook way back in 2004, so more recent(improved) work is on the last couple pages.

good start man! I guess a tip for drawing those porportions is to measure the heads. It's usually one head length from the the neck to the nipple, nipple to belly button, belly button to groin, 2 more down for the knee, 2 (1 1/2?) more down for the foot. It's different for every pic or person but it's a quick way to see if your drawing is measuring up right. keep updating!

good to see a new book. the studies are a great thing to do, i myself am a big fan of bridgman. make sure u are seeing how and why he does things i.e. why he draws something this or that way and why he accents a specific line. making sure you see why he does something will help you understand, just seeing it and thinking "wow, that looks cool so ill draw it" will make you try to draw like him as opposed to understading anatomy the way he does. keep it up. hope to see more.

jackalanubis-thanks for the tips on proportion, i will definitely try it out. oh, i checked out your sketchbook, awsome man.
metaphysiks- i agree, i am doing these studies cause i really want to get better, so i am really trying to pay attention to the specific lines and understand the effect it has on the body. (its amazing what only one line can do)

Althoug this one girl's proportions are pretty messed up, I really like the pic. It has some weird aesthetics to me, esp. the black hair and her breast. But, I think, this is only an exception and therefore your studies are certainly helpful in terms of learning anatomy and stuff. keep it up!

Hey dingoegret,
Good work on your studies. I've got (or had...) Bridgeman's book and have used it extensivly - couldn't tell you where it is *now* (shuffles some books on desks, knocks over stack of CD's onto floor, cat screams, lamp collapses and pictures fall off wall) -- Nope. Don't have a clue.
Your original studies (non-book) are good as well, and you can see where you are applying what you getting out of the books. Keep it up.
In addition to doing figurative studies, you may also want to try some still lifes. Excellent for shape and shadow. Do them in color if you are wanting to work on your coloring skills.
Overall your is work is very good, if a little hesitant in some places. Try working on larger paper with looser strokes. Don't be afraid to "just let things happen". That's what a sketch is for.
Cheers,
~Oreg.

Dingoegret,
Been watching your sketchbook since you posted in my own, but for some reason I kept forgetting to post in yours and I could have sworn I've done it before. Anyway, the noses are very good studies. I like those little thumbnail sketches in the corner. As far as your color I'm just learning all of this myself, but the girl doesn't have any depth to her( no shadows). The robot is better in that regard, but there is practically no contrast in either one. Also, whenever something has a local color (the sky's local color is blue, the grass' local color is green, the local color of an apple tends to be red, etc.), the shadows on the object tend to have the complement of the local color in them. It neutralizes the color, yet still keeps it vibrant. It's very strange, but it works. The fact that the girl's hair is orange realy helps her head pop away from the blue swirls in the background, but the blue-green suit she's wearing makes her body much harder to pick out.
If you want to take a look at something I've done, I put a picture from the coloring book thread into my sketchbook here. (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12944) I used only blue, orange, black and white to color it. It should give you an idea of how complicated color can get.
There's a lot to remember about color. Hope that was helpful.
Sincerely,
Chris

i'm back with another update
oregano-thanks. yeah, i have really been trying to apply what i have learned from the bridgeman book, i am glad it shows. i will try to work on some still life pretty soon, i think i am going to draw a still life with normal pencils and then do the same scene in colored pencils, and see how they turn out. i have a huge sketch book like 3ft by 2.5ft, i will whip it out and start sketching in it again.
jarvis2824- thanks for the tips on color. i will take your advice next time i color something. i check your sketchbook again, that self portrait is still really cool, and the robot cowboy is sweet. you mentioned a coloring book thread, where is that located?
heres a DSG pic, i colored it really quick (jarvis, i had not gotten your reply yet, so i could not have applied what you said:()

Dingoegret,
You've made a lot of progress since last I posted. That coloring of the fellow with the technological arms for the coloring book was pretty good. Your figures are getting better and it's cool to see that you've started to incorporate color into your sketchbook doodles. Keep it up. Proud of you, if that's a proper thing to say.

hey dingogret, very nice progress here. but what i want to comment on is http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/page35.jpg
this one, not bad for studying with no ref but what i have to point out is that the chest area seems a bit squished, and sort of sliding to the right. get a mirror and take a look at the reflection, u ll get what i mean.
btw on the faces, they are looking pretty good, though the thing that is bothering me the most is the eyes, they seem BIG or the cornea does. btw if you know your imagination heads are looking bad, then go to drawing from ref and life, that is how u will learn how they correctly look.
i was wondering, when i am drawing clothes on people should i draw out the figure and then draw on clothes or just draw the clothes at the same time as body??
absolutely draw the people first, see then you know where to lay the clothes depending on a crease here or there due to muscles, bones fat etc. when u start getting better at drawing clothing on people then you could pretty much imagine how clothes lay on ppl so you dont have to draw the person first.
gl, and i ll be waiting for an update!

keep workin those studies, man. make sure when you draw them, you arent just copying what you see. make sure you are really studying and learning from what you are doing. ive been doing a lot of studying lately, and after i finish studying something, i try to draw it without reference. i do a couple pages without the ref and i see how much i have/havent learned, and what else i need to do.. .its almost like a self evaluation. it works well for me, at least. just a suggestion. keep drawin

over my break i had the chance to sit down and paint, and i took some progression pics along the way (didnt think to take pics till i was past a few steps, oops). i dont know if i qualify for this since its only my second oil painting, but here are the steps i took....
First i positioned the models face how i wanted it. proceeded(sp) to put a white piece of paper beside her left cheek, to reflect some light. then i took some pictures and picked my favorite.
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/HPNX0436.jpg
Second (no pic, sorry) i did a quick skecth of her on canvas, paying close attention to proportions.
Third (no pic, :( ) i lay the base colors to the face. 1. very light sin tone 2.very dark skin tone 3. semi dark skin tone.
Fourth is when i went in and started refining the face. adding lips, eye, and putting in the subtle shadows.
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/HPNX0437.jpg
Fifth i continue refining the face and added the hair. i didnt try to paint every strand of hair, just kept it simple and tried to keep the colors right.
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/HPNX0438.jpg
Sixth i added the shirt, i decided to change the color to tie it in with her lips (and i didnt want her shirt to be a focal(sp) point. finally i outlined the face.
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/HPNX0439.jpg
Seventh(final) i filled the canvas with black and blended in white on the right side of her head. and further refining things where i think it needed it.
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/HPNX0440.jpg
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/HPNX0441.jpg
-sorry about the quality and the lighting in the pics, i have to take pics with my camcorder (dont have a memory stick for my digital camera yet).

Really good, I can see a lot of improvement in later work compared to your first sketches (which weren't bad either by the way)
I don't know if you've read Loomis Fun with a pencil but he has a interesting approach to drawing heads. You can find more info here (http://www.saveloomis.org/) including a pdf.

You should remove the [/IMG] at the end of the link or otherwise it won't work.
You can test them yourself by clicking on them.
About the painting, I like where it is going, skin tones look very good but indeed the eyes look a bit off. Her right eye is looking more upward than her left one.

Looks like your on the right path---I drew all the Bridgman stuff (several times over the years) studied Hale' stuff a lot read Master Class about 10 times Drawing Lessons about the same Anatomy Lessons not worth spit except for the pics.
I probably have every book and anatomy worth having so ask me before you waste time on crap!
The last couple of years I have been concentration on drawing from memory more than working from reference.
I do draw from the model about 4 to 6 hours a week.
My advice if you need some is adopt a mentor for a while and learn to think like him but make the drawing yours - try to reinvent what you are looking at in your own style. Do not copy analyze

Hey, nice work. I'm always really motivated when I see so much progress in another individual. Keep it coming. I encourage you to try stuff you know you don't draw as well. You've been working on these anatomy studies forever. Keep doing them, but draw more of those cooky perspective shots. I'd recommend starting them out in thumbnail, just so you can make more of them and get a feel for how they can be structured. It also looks like your mechanical/robotic/inorganic subjects are quite as developed either. Integrate some of those into your studies. They help out with understanding of planes and lighting (IMHO). But anyway, this stuff is great. Rock on.

Ditto to what auden said on this being a motivating sketchbook. I'd love to know what your doing and stuff. In terms of school and art classes and stuff?
And when did you start aiming to improve in drawing? I don't scan many of my drawings, but after seeing this I think I will. Oh and great work CA acadamy moderating.

There's lots of outstanding work here! I'm impressed by the range of subjects and stylistic choices. All of the hard work is definitely paying off. I especially love the anatomical studies and the watercolors. Btw, the paper warping from the wc in the sketchbook can be ironed out (like with an iron and a piece of paper between the work and the iron).
Well done!

I admire your anatomy knowledge, your different styles and your paintings generally!
Just go on with this,

Perhaps try to go further; some interaction of characters
some more dynamic poses...

I see you did already some cool dynamic ones in the upper part of this page

Doin good man. One thing I'd point out about the charcoal drawing is that the shadows lack definition. The lit areas are great. But with the solid black shadow it looks like a face carved into a block of stone instead of a solid head. I made the same mistake many times.
Try lifting out some small indications of reflected light in the shadow areas: back rim of the ear, neck, some strands of hair. See if it looks better.
Keep it up man!

It looks like the SSG groups have been tossed around, which can be a good thing. I really like the amount of improvement since the early posts. I haven't heard what's been happening school-wise, though. One thing I would say is that it doesn't seem like there's a lot of variation in your shadows. It certainly makes the light seem stronger, but shadow depth adds to the overall depth.
Good stuff.

Hey, just wanted to say how much I've been enjoying your sketches and everyone else's on here. I've been looking at sketchbooks for several hours per day. It's really cool watching people improve.
Yours was especially neat because it didn't go up all that much in skill-- maybe a bit, and then WHAM, the multiportrait color explosion on this page just floored me. You have improved so much. I am especially loving your shading style, very interesting and moody.

hell yeah man--> looking good! here are a few crits on the awesome dino/reptilian dragon thing:
a couple of minor compositional things: seems like the trees that frame the composition are a little bit predictable and stylized.... Potentially they could give you a really nice art nouveau kind of framing effect, but right now that they're mirrored is really, really distracting to me. the dragon aspet..looks great compositionally. I'd say leave it as is and continue to rock it. the middle ground with the robe wearing guys i dunno... i wish the eye level were closer to the groiund... maybe at head level with the snakes or SLIGHTLY above... not as much perspective. tuft of leaves in the lower right??? seems like a haphazard compositional element.
k... hope that helps. thanks for the info about HHH, i wanted to call him but last time i kinda woke him up or something :perv:

thanks for the crit man! i should be working on the piece again soon. i was actually thinking about bringing the lizard guys up to eye level a little more. yeah, those foreground leaves were really bothering me. the lizard gu up front should be enough, but i might just take him out as well. dunno.

cool man... it's just, the lizard hunchback guys have so much potential i think. really if you played them up it would intensify the overall impact of that gigantic a$$ dragon in the background. also... i was thinking that a change of perspective on that burning cauldron would help things immensely... what if in looking into this scene we could see burning embers lighting out into the congregated reptilian group? that would cast some ed wood style b-movie shadow upward lighting onto the visage of the dragon, which would be a little difficult to execute, but would be so impressive to see done right :)
Yeah... give me a call. actually tonight while i was driving i called your old number and some dude answered, that didn't sound like you:
"hey, ahh, is retep there?"
"uhh... ok. He doesn't have this number anymore."

Reactions to dragon composition: The lines of sight are all pointing to that fire, plus it's the only warm element in the comp so it becomes the focal point, but I would assume that dragon they seem to be worshipping should be the focus. Get rid of the symetrical trees and leaf that's supposed to balance the guy on the left, put another guy there instead. The guy's head peaking out at the bottom doesn't seem to be doing anything either. Do some studies of churches and temples, laying on the steps doesn't seem fitting for a dragon god. Light between trees should be toned down.

wow peter, some really impressive stuff you are dropping here! So i put on my 3D glasses and this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/IMG_0508.jpg) really jumped off of the page at me. yeah, the digital camera isn't ideal, but at least you are posting stuff.
def the self portrait is the so-called :lens: GLEAMING ZENITH :lens: of this update. seems like the face is dead on, and the rendering is nice and thorough. one crit i'd like to make is that...maybe the background should flatten out a little more. right now the marks that you are making that circle your head are somewhat evident, which ruins the foreground + background depth thing slightly. "ruins slightly" i guess is kind of an oxymoron :nohope:, i hope it's not too confounding of a criticism.
AND --> I guess you probably got my email about the CATL Sketch Group (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53365&goto=newpost) trip to fernbank to see the imperial rome exhibit on saturday the 28th--> lemme know if you (maybe even "you guys") are down and i could stop by and pick yall up if you are sans-automobile. Should be a lot of fun, it looks like a lot of new people will be showing up, so we may even break the 20 ARTISTS mark with any luck. Then we'll start a gang and go flip some automobiles at a shopping center, just to get good under-the-car reference views. Lemme know if you're down, k? it promises to be an entire day filled with UNSANE sketching debauchery. maybe even that blue-kollared-rake-brushed-emo-haired-freak from macon will make it up. which... actually he's going to be in town this saturday and several of us are getting together... hopefully we'll all be able to draw together for a little bit
"uhh... are you guys in some kind of class together?"
"I knew someone who drew once"

thanks for the support gugg. i see what you mean about the foreground + background relationship, its really bothering me now. when i geTIT back ill flatten it out so its all one value, or have it a bit darker by my shoulders and fade out.
im really disapointed i didnt get to go to any CATL meetings. this last quarter really kicked my ass, next quarter i will hopefully be more prepared and have more extra time. how did that 24-hour sketchbook hoopla go down??

Neat idea having the figure on the left in your portfolio...I might put a head and legs on it so that it reads instantly.
As for other crits...depends what you want to do as an artist! Show us the best of what YOU want to do. You could put a few life drawing pieces in there to show your traditional knowledge as well.

here is a style i have been pursuing lately, they're helping me to understand color interaction. these were done over a few months, and are in chronological order. i wanted to show them in order to show my development.
-the tall ones are a little over two feet, and the small ones are about a foot.

a quick environment study last night, about 1 hour...

its really hard for me to use color on the computer, i'm going to have to get used to it.

Dude, one of the things I've always loved about your junk is how subtle you work. I'm so addicted to smashing out lines and colors, it's nice to see your stuff work so softly.

Har-thanks! keep on smashing those lines!
i almost forgot to post this paintings, i painted it for a local cafe competition. I won the competition! so now it has a permanent spot in the cafe (and i received a nice cash bonus ;) ).
its acrylic on hard board.
its quite a large painting (about 4ft, i think), so i wanted to show some detail picks. the painting was a huge learning experience, i used paint in ways i had never done before. it took about a month to paint, because i would only paint in natural light (in order to get the colors right). i did work on the patterns indoors though *whew* those took a minute to paint. there are many layers of paint, upwards to five on certain spots. all of the patterned areas have an under-layer of gold paint, which shimmers through the edges (unfortunately you can't capture this in the photos :( ).

heres a color study, its a three page spread in my pocket size sketchbook. its funny how irrelevant size is, when it comes to uploading images on the internet. the last painting i posted is about 4ft and this one isn't even a ft. anyway, here it is...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v48/dingoegret/color_study_001.jpg
holy shit!
drawing with a wacom tablet is like learning to draw all over again. it was damn hard to get the rendering right on this figure study. i originally tried to draw it in color, but had too hard of a time getting the colors right.

Shit! Gotta finish mine. I agree about how drawing with the tablet is so different. I've had mine forever and still feel really uncomfortable with it. I'm so unsure when drawing with it. The sketch of the girl is still pretty sweet.
At first I was going to recommend some darker darks, but looking at it, I think the coloring and the atmospheric deal yo is pretty sweet. How about some crisper shapes up close? The back legs really work, it feels like the legs are far as hell away, but the front doesn't quite portray the same amount of size. The design and the are sweet as shit though.
