here's a WIP. Dont know where it's going. Colors are giving me a headache (could be yesterdays beers).
Guess i'll just keep messing around until it either gets good or gets really messy.........

Here's my suggestion. add some warmer hues into the background to bring forward the colder hues shown in the 2 main characters.
The image is completely 'cold hue' to me. Adding some warmer hues should create some focus.
Work out the ground, don't just try and fake one, otherwise they look like they're floating.

That sounds very sensible. I'll give it another go. I havent really learned how to see what looks right with color. Or rather cannot identify what looks wrong. If i could at least do that i could always just change the worst parts until it looks better.
Hey, here's a thought! I'll do some color studies.
Thanks man.

I might actually disagree with SEVANS. Judging by the composition and area of highest contrast, I'd say that your main figure is the man. He's wearing a red shirt. So, if you want him to really grab the viewer, maybe push the background more green. Then you can transition the yellow robot's midtones into nice reds/oranges, instead of grey. That will generate a nice complementary color event. Just a suggestion.
Rad picture. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

Thats not a bad idea either from Johanson. Perhaps you could find a 'warmish' green to do this with.
so many ways to mess with colour.

After thinking about your suggestions i have come up with some kind of third alternative. johanson, you're right about my main figure and Sevans points about warmth are valid too. I will try to get the red shirt warm and do cooler greenish bg. hows that?

Sounds great. SEVANS was right when he said the picture had a general "cold hue" to it. The colors are all pretty grey and muted. Pushing the color into a wider spectrum will really make it a more visually exciting piece.

Time for an update!
Still something that is bugging me apart from the fact that the initial uncertainty shines through. Keep it coming guys.
I'll sleep on it maybe i'll see it myself.

What's goin on with the robot's left arm?
And the colors don't do it for me. I'm not a fan of greyish paintings, but that's just a matter of opinion so ignore that.
Aside form that...Finish it man, looks very nice. Love the detail in the gun, and I hope that transfers to everything else.

The left arm was supposed to be in front of the robot thus not visible to viewer. Right now the colors on the robot and the other guys cybernetic leg is the same. It looks confusing, I'm not clear about what i want to do about it though. I need to give the robot a left arm, but more importantly i need to rethink (start thinking, rather) the robot design. It's too round and toyish looking. I will work more on the strength (key, chroma whats it called) once i have the right color in the right place.
The feedback here are sooo valuable. Just to get a line of someone elses thoughts are enough to put the brain in a new direction. It's great!

A short stab at this again. Started thinking about the scenery. Immidiately bumped into two problems. What should be there and how to bring it all together.
Anyone seen good info somewhere about constructing locations as backgrounds for characters?
Question: Does it work to put 2*2 complementary colors (red-green and orange-blue) like that in a picture? Is it to much?

Huge improvement on the original image.
I like the colours at this stage, so I don't think that it's too much.
The background looks suitable and the addition of the foreground scenery helps create depth well.
Huge improvement from your starting image, Finish it.

Thanks for the help sevans!
I was really uncertain about this pic one hour ago and looking at it now after a break it looks quite promising. Just hates how pictures change on you between sessions.
Whatta ya know, perseverance actually pays off. Who woulda guessed? I'll just go ahead with details and final render then.
