Hello, my name is Josh I am 18 and I'm some what still new to having an account for the website, I've been look at this site for almost a year, during that time I learned a lot but didn't really start drawing more then just random doodles in homework or classwork at school. So at the start of the school year I figured out what I wanted to do. And that is become a concept artist. If anyone wants to comment or give crit, by all means please do, lol as long as it is helpful, be burtally honest, try and BREAK MY SPIRIT lol. :lifedrawing:. So this is my learning path to drawing bliss. Won't you come along :mod: I've only had not even one art class, i'm still in the middle of art one (High School) other then that I'm pretty much self taugh + what I've learned from this website, which was A LOT. For the moment the stuff I post will be some random drawings/studies that I am doing. -SP33

I think you need to study gesture, you need to work a lot in that, also structure, this way you'll avoid proportions issues. the kenshin drawing is nice.
keep it up

Thanks for droping by my sketchbook. It seems there is another Ruruoni kenshin fan around here hehe. I think you should do some loomis practices too specially "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" and "Drawing The Heads & Hands".
Keep it up!

@andres333: yea that is some thing major I need to work on lol I have all of the Ebook on my computer it is a matter of printing some of the pictures to draw. I can't stand drawing at my computer desk, it's was to uncomfortable to sit and draw for long periods at a time.
@leanunlibro: Yes I am a big fan of Ruruoni kenshin, gotta love it. My art is def a work in progress

I'm right with you on that "learning path to drawing bliss." And I always enjoy seeing Bridgman anatomy studies (first post).

December 15th, 2009, 06:58 PM
All good advice in here. I like your imagination in some of this stuff but a good grasp on anatomy will propel you far!
I agree with Brown's suggestion of Bridgeman anatomy; he is great at portraying volume in musculature. I'd pair it with the more technical studies of Rubins anatomy as well.

@Blueman09 - Shut up Dylon lol
@browntear - Yes Bridgman studies are all ways nice to do and see.
@Pecos McGrill - Yeah I have a lot of work to do for anatomy, lack of doing do (kinda lazy about it) I seem to have a hard time to start drawing(getting pencil in my hand) but once I do I can draw for a long time.

Hey I like your sketches with the people wearing mantles and such ;) (second post 4th pic) I don't know anything about drapery but especially the clothes of the guy in the middle at the lower end of the page looks quite decent.
Keep practicing ;)

@wizper - Thank you lol, never been called "talented" before :D
@DeadManDancing - thanks, I don't know much about drapery either I just went with what looked like it would work lol.

Good start :)
Try doing less drawings from imagination and more studies maybe. Or, trying to put it another way, do stuff from imagination, but draw things that you already have studied.
Draw a figure from reference a few times, then do it from imagination. But I think studies is still what you should concentrate on at this stage.
When you draw from imagination you only use the knowledge you have collected this far, and it will make you repeat your mistakes instead of learning from them.
(Take this with a grain of salt, Im still a beginner myself. But this is how I see it, looking at my own progress and other SBs.)

You got potential! Just draw every day and be stubbord as hell! Trust me, It'll pay off.
Spiderlok33
December 17th, 2009, 10:33 AM
@Krel - That is a good idea, if I dont have time to draw I study how the muscles are put together by staring at the picture from loomis and some Bridgeman (I printed them out). And I'm see a lot of inprovement already
@Bummer6 - Thank you, I try and be hard on myself but not to hard that I want to give up
Updates hopefully today, gotta use friend's phone to take pictures till my mom lets my use her scanner

Hey, thanks for the comment on my sketchbook :) , If you want a really good helpful site for anatomy reference you should try this http://www.posemaniacs.com/ I only found out about it today but its great. Keep going

Just wanted to add to the comment above.
Posemaniacs models are NOT accurate enough for pure anatomy studies, but its awesome for gesture drawing.

@JoeS - Yea i've been there, it good for gestures as Krel said
@Krel - Lol I figured he meant Gestures, cause loomis and bridgeman have the best anatomy studies. Getting the right propotions is a Bi$ch though.
Updates when ever I get a chance to sit down and draw and take pictures, btw sorry for the crappy quality of the pictures, lol still haveing scanner porblems, friends phone FTW,not...

Well one good thing is you seem to have the base talent.
One thing a friend told me to try was drawing a circle (or other shape) and then below it try to copy it exactly and do that like 20 times. Helped me with observation skills. And the best thing of all you can do it while you are pretending to do your work in school :P.

Hi Spiderlok33, thank you for commenting my sketchbook.
I like your Bridgman-Study at the beginning, he´s great for studying human anatomy. I can only emphasize the advice of practicing all the time... and studying great drawings as well.

there are lot of stuff here!
try to draw a vertical axis at the beginning to prevent your drawing not to be bent
keep on drawing

Seems you're very motivated! Though, I must react on the Loomis studies. Sure, it's great to have examples like him or any other grandmaster (Rembrandt, van Eyck etc) But I'd recommend sketching people on the subway, bus or just sit down somwhere and start sketching away. Look at the proportions, I'm currently in this very process myself aswell!
I'd love to see more in the future.

@Colonel Conterno-Thanks, and the whole repeating drawing a shape, I'll start that soon.
@Thomas Schwanke-Yes practicing more is something I still need to work on and something I need to get better at.
@Twan- lol yes my drawings being bent is a big problem for me, will defiantly work on that.
@Toobs-Well drawing at/on the subway and buss would be a big problem first, there is not subways were I live city is not big enough, and the buses don't come by very often and lol I have no where to go on a bus. As for drawing people though that would not be a problem I will hopfully do that tonight at our family get together, there is a lot of movement going on, and they don't know that I want to be a CA so it seems a little awkward drawing in front of them.
Updates soon

Pretty nice update man! =) Keep it up.
First of all, it would very good for your art if you could invest in a sketchbook. Moleskins sketchbooks are amazing, but any sketchbook really works. Doesnt have to be anything fancy.
I think you should keep doing these gesture studies, they will take you to wonderful places! Get a book like Loomis, its a great book for starters!
Hope you the best of look friend! I will drop by to see some other stuff!
Merry Christmas!

Actually, forget what I said about Bridgeman in the critique, take a look at The Natural Way to Draw. From your sketch book it seems like it'll be more useful to you. Especially for the gesture work and performing exercises properly. The idea with gesture drawing is to capture the movement of the figure, what your doing now is doing a quick outline, there's no real feeling of movement or weight. And for your studies duplicating what you see isn't what's important, what matters is applying what loomis or anyone else is talking about and based on the mutant and allot of the other stuff that's not happening. Go back over what you've been thru and take it slow, only move on once you really understand and have applied it in another context.

@strange1900 - Your right, I jump the gun to much on trying to draw full stuff without know the basics. And that is something that I really need to work on. Defiantly going to be the biggest thing in my work is gestures and anatomy full out.
@Alternative - Thanks, I copied the picture from a warcraft3 booklet, my gesture studies in the coming future will becoming hard core.

Thanks for the music/volume comment! Seems like your focusing on currently on Anatomy...
Classic Human Anatomy (http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Human-Anatomy-Function-Movement/dp/0823024156)
This book is astounding in it's depth and detail, it explains every major muscle and bones (that an artist would care about anyway) what they do, how they do it, there proper rotational axises, and how they affect the body and it's composition when flexed and relaxed.
Keep up the study!

Your anime drawings remind me a lot of the stuff I did when I was a kid. Keep drawing and never stop drawing what you like but you really should focus on studies and traditional lessons. That way the things you love to draw will look 100x better.

Coming along. Keep studying, practicing and posting and you'll get there. I suggest you stay away from lined paper whenever possible (there's almost always good old copy paper lying around). IMO, it will help you to value your work more, and hence put more into it.

lol yea the its only on lined paper because that is the only thing that was there. I have a ton of printer paper in my room, at the time I think I might have been at school.
