Left to rust ...

http://w1.131.comhem.se/~u13115312/images/abandonedrobot.jpg

Bah, still a bit flat ... and almost no background ... and NOW I notice one leg is quite a bit longer than the other ...

Oh, well, paint and learn ...

Inspired by a documentry I saw about abandoned WWII artillery and tanks on the islands in the Pacific. Should have made it more rusty and defined the whole thing better, but I was trying to get the background right and ran out of time.

Well, here it is. Figured thered be lots of neglected, rusting robots so i took a different angle.

This is a robot from the "forgotten" civilisation of the Mayans. Anthropologists used to admire their advanced calendars and irrigation systems, but it wasn't until the discovery of Olaxicot'l
that the true power of the mayan civilisation was discovered.

Damn, this daily sketch group is a great idea. Thought I'd join in. I guess my robot is less abandoned, and more trapped. whoops. If there were kids playing outside, then it'd be a more abandoned feeling.

hope everyone's having a good day,

Life can be tough for an old robot.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/simon.davies/AbandonedRobot3.jpg

Beatnik- nice painterly style, maybe could be a bit darker here and there and have some bright streaks of light coming down from surface.

Killrobots - Could use heavier shadows to seperate bot from ground.

eyebooger- love that design, some of the dark lines could maybe be a bit darker.

A really good and varied turnout so far. I don't have time to comment on them all, but as for the ones that caught my eye...

Hagac - Very cool. I love the simple black lines of the skeleton. A remix of an earlier piece?

form_n_focus - Great idea. The design seems perfect for a retro Mayan robo.

Hermchen - God I love that. The colours are great, and I particularly like the rod sticking out of the back of his head, and the slightly skew mouth.

stereophoenix - Aww... what a sweetie. Nice design and brushes.

Hazzard - Man you gotta finish that one. Love the details so far. The face reminds me of The Fly II.

Railboy - Yeah that does creep me out. I think it's the mouth?

nBT - I like the face of the first image. Nice nipples too! :D

Beatnik - I like the overall design, and the shoulder joint detail looks great. Looks a little washed (pun?) out though. I'd like to see stronger colours and texture.

Iotrez - Nice perspective. The head is great.

sabre- woah, thanks! didn't know I was missed XD

elven req- cool, another elliot smith fan! he has nice mellow tunes

hunger artist- thanks for the tips, I need to start doing more thumbnails. I think it was explained to me before, movies back then didn't have any fancy gimmicks like cg to help carry them so they really had to be strong in the other areas.

nbt- I appreciate the crit man, I'm trying to get better at making successful illustration and it is helpful to know I didn't make it this time. :D

Will try harder next time...more skull sweat and less muscleing through.

watup kiddies. great pics everyone!

damn, too many people to talk about, so I'll just comment on the three before me...

JackalAnubis - awesome colors! The perspective on the inside of the upper lip is off, and same with the chin... it gets kind of mushy and indistinguishable in his arm area, but hey, this is just a sketch. you did that with a mouse? damn...

Eyebooger - your stuff is always great! Though ure robot concept is off the chain and well done, I dont feel any sense of abandonment in the picture... it just looks like a cool robot standing there?

Lance - Love teh concept there... abandoned robot that's become someone's home! You could work on making the head less flat... there's very little depth in there...

Okay here's mine:

"The giant robot Vlexius had guarded the society of Veden for eons against all threats... Until one day the Vedenians found out that their planet was venturing closer and closer to their blistering white sun. This was a threat Vlexius could not help against, and soon the Veden's crafted space vessels and left their world, including Vlexius, behind. Left to face his grief against his inability to help those he had sworn to protect, Vlexius stood motionless, overlooking the dead cities, waiting and guarding the empty graveyard of buildings until the inevitable last days of his world..."

2 hours, Photoshop 7.

Guys I just want to say that I've been postin in this thread for 4 days now, and I think I've learnt a lot more about digital painting by just workin on these little sketches. Of course I've got MUCH MUCH more to learn, so please, if you have any thoughts, let me know. Good or bad, I would like to hear em. Thanks!

With the threat of an impending meteor strike, Earth is in the midst of a massive global evacuation. Space on the ships is scarce and a lot of things get left behind. Valuables, pets, and even family robots like Ernie.

help me ryan church kenobi, you're my only hope!

dahsramu- I thought that story was really touching, I dig those kinds of stories :D
I'm guessing that distant bright spot is the sun? Where's your horizon, I guess just under the bright spot? The way the clouds are drawn, the same on top and under, it looks like it should be much higher in the sky, like a portal or somesuch. I like the lighting you chose though, much.

Dahsramu
February 1st, 2004, 01:43 AM
silentbrain - beautiful piece!!! the ligthing and ambience is excellent ...

and thanks for the critique... I was thnking the horizon is a little past the last row of buildings, but the whole landscape is supposed to be engulfed in a foggy mist from the water that has evaporated due to the heat from the closing sun so you cant really see it.

And you guessed correct, the light is the sun, and it is supposed to be a rare glimpse at the sun through the dense mist and cloud cover that is now blanketing the entire planet.

thanks for the words homie.

Lance: I REALLY like your concept. However, you need to give us a few more visual clues as to what that concept is. Maybe the rest of the robot's body could be in the background. Then the viewer could make the jump from giant dead robot, to a head that's been turned into a house. Right now, without any explanation, it looks more like a house shaped like a head. We don't get any of its history just by looking at it.

I'd suggest not including written expanations of your daily sketches. Ask us what we think the image is of. I think you'll be able to improve even more quickly if you're giving unbiased feedback.

Again, I really dig your concept. That's why I'm taking the time to write this at almost 3 in the morning. I just hope my words are still making sense.

later,

-andrew

No no no... Not Koontz.

You are remembering Isaac Asimov's robot laws (http://www.kynson.freeserve.co.uk/Dave/asimov.htm) -- and, yes, these are them.
