Hello everyone,

We're currently developing a small turn based strategy game similar to the old Panzer General games but in a far future sci fi setting. We need someone to provide us with pencil concept sketches of the potential units (front, side, rear) - so that we can then pass these on to our 3D modelers (who, unfortunately, don't do concept art).

As of now, we would require roughly 30 different units sketched. However, the task is not as daunting as you would think because we have developed the plot line a fair amount and have a fair idea of what each unit *should* look like. So your task would be translate our thoughts to art.

A bit about the game:
Its a turn based strategy game, sci fi far future gritty setting (think Warhammer 40K meets Dune). Three factions are squaring off - all humans - but with very different agendas and backgrounds. One of the factions is player controlled (DeSoto).

So what do we need exactly:
For each unit we will send you a description of not only the general racial characteristics, but also theme colours and what we sort of envisage the unit to look like. This means far less groping around in the dark and constant revisions or anything like that.

From you, we would require a detailed pencil sketch: front, back and side on -which would be used as the design concept by our 3d modelers. We may at a later date require coloured sketches to help texturing, but we will leave that aside for now.

Unit appearance in game:
The units themselves will appear to be anywhere from 1 cm to 3 cm on the screen - so the detail level should be up to 4 cm in height (so not very detailed). The general view of the game is 2d isometric. With each unit captured by a model (1 - 3 cm). When a unit engages another in combat, a different view screen pops up and combat animation will take place with firing, damage, and casualties to each side (over the span of 3-5 seconds). The model you're designing will be both the model used on the battle map and the model used in the combat animation. The combat animation screen will be more zoomed in so models are to scale with each and will range in size from tiny dots (if soldiers are going against some monster robot) to 3-4 cm (the monster robot! or soldiers against soldiers)

To apply:
Please send a sketch (detailed but just front on) of the unit described below to d h i r a j . j o s e p h @ p l e b g a m e s . com.

DeSoto V trooper:
The standard infantry man of the DeSoto V army. Uses a generic laser rifle. Fairly low armour (think futuristic flak armor/leather jerkin). Their strength is their relative speed due to their lower armor. DeSoto's theme colours are green and yellow.
The planet, DeSoto V, is a low gravity world and as such most Sotans are: taller, brittle bones, less muscular bodies
DeSoto V is a largely agricultural world, its economy dominated by two major economic powers which are family owned and run (like many current conglomerates in India). These families have raised their own private armies of which this DeSoto trooper is the lowly grunt.

Payment:
The budget is undetermined. But it is small with a high limit of $500 (hence the forum :)). Please submit your rates on a PER CONCEPT basis. Many thanks.

Other terms:
The work is to be completed over 30 working days. (We might readjust the unit number downwards or upwards - which will mean a pro rata decrease/increase in working days and price). We also reserve the right to ask for revisions until satisfied for each unit, or unless we mutually agree to drop the unit from the order (reducing the price pro rata). Revisions will NOT count towards the 20 day limit. Instead, you agree to make each requested revision within two working days of the request.

A bit more about our team:
I think we have a really great team. We have a very experienced programmer, a dedicated team of five writers, and one artist already who works on the terrain. The team covers at least five different countries. We have a wiki that has been up and running for a little while now, which is constantly being added to - and we're always looking for more people, and I hope many of you will consider our request.

If you have any questions or require any clarifications please contact:
d h i r a j . j o s e p h @ p l e b g a m e s . com

Many thanks all!

30 units, 3 views of each, with possible revisions included in the price. That's potentially upwards of 180 sketches...? For $300. Can you see where I'm going with this...?

May we respectfully remind applicants to include both the expected compensation on a per concept basis (keeping in mind the $500 absolute limit) and the sample drawing of the DeSoto V trooper in all their applications?

Many thanks, and thank you for the response so far! :)

Just to serve as an update we have hired two concept artists, and we are taking applications for the third. Each artist will be responsible for their own faction and will be doing 10 concepts each. So the available position is for 10concepts.

Please submit your application complete with the DeSoto trooper front on sketch and a final per concept rate.

Many thanks.
