My first real try with environmentals so crit are more then welcome. This is the wip. Been reading up on it and found out that it was connected with astral signs but they moved sence back then so its new signs now. Picked a random one. Cancer. Have a old norse /viking'ish feeling to the houses.

Okay guys, sorry If I was vague! Here's what I mean by solstice.
Solstice refers to the longest and shortest days of the year respectively. The Summer solstice in the northern hemisphere is when the sun is highest in the sky (most towards the north), and thus the longest day of the year. The winter solstice in the northern hemisphere is when the sun is the lowest in the sky (most towards the south) and is thus the shortest day of the year.
Please don't get confused by the zodiac, that isn't what was meant. The solstice stands on it's own, though it was often used with the zodiac, which are made up of the constellations that the sun moves through. The reason they are linked is because they'll note which sign the sun is in for each solstice, not that they really have anything to do with eachother!

Alright. Sounds cool, but I want to make sure that I get the topic right.
This is a temple that is dedicated to the two solstices, that focuses on the light those events produce.
So does the temple have to be influenced by winter and summer, or just light in general?

Throwing my hat in the ring here. C+C always welcome.
This took me about an hour tonight. Still trying to figure out the burning situation on the right. I avoid adding people like its the plague, but it would be cool to have a gathering around a fire for the celebration.

Are you certain that such a stream of light is possible, considering that the light is coming from pretty much everywhere?

Great entry's so far guys! :)
I see that the concept of the sun is taken very random, and this is good. Because I got no clue how to take on the sun/light part.
I got 2 versions, one normal without sun concept. 1 with the sun-celled-glass-energy-shields :p
Very crappy and I got a huge doubt about it ;)
Please crit if you got some

Always been a huge fan of Clark Ashton Smith's three stories set on his version of Mars - 'Aihai' - and tried to incorporate the pink skies from the original NASA photos sent back from the first lander... before they figured out that the color correction was all wrong and they were actually blue. That's the way I remember it, anyway...

Arthur 'Two Sheds' great use of silhouette! I think it's nice, even if we don't know where the light comes from (you could add some light to the ground to make it more evident if it bugs you, then make the focused beam colored to set it apart).
rzp great start! (and the building design is very realistic)
I think I overworked it:

That's pretty cool revenebo, looks epic. Might I suggest introducing some other colors, perhaps red or purple, because right now it's almost monochromatic and that kind of makes it a bit dull. Also you could add an occasional blue or red to those people down there, they are barely visible. Cheers :)

How are you creating so much detail and straight lines? My hands are really shaky and its hard to use my Wacom pen to get great edges like you have. Also what methods are you using for brushes or either PS or Painter?
SIME
December 5th, 2009, 09:34 AM
You can use the path tool to create lines like that chris, the great thing about doing it that way is you can have off page vanishing points, just set up your straight lines with the path tool and then use stroke path to create the perspective grid.

December 5th, 2009, 09:37 AM
as far as brushes go i have been using a hard round brush set with a low flow rate, this makes it easy to mix colours by applying little pressure but when u press hard u get nice hard edges. I also have some texture brushes that i use sparingly, i paint this on a new layer and then free transform it to create realistic angles.
hope that helps a bit

how do you determine where the vanishing points are if they are off the page? I can never determine which is the right way to do it, because if i make a vertical vp too close to the horizontal vp's it may look static and not very perspective like. I dont know how to determine a good spot.

I think your colors look great, and compliment each other well. I just realized how to setup the perspective grid with help from M@ and some of his vanishing point brushes. I just got the impression i could use two vanishing points to create a similar idea like you did with your two vanishing points. Other than using brushes, i dont know how to determine how far or close a vanishing point needs to be to make it appear realistic. Especially if they go off the format of the scene.
I think you are doing some fine work with your texturing on your bricks, and i hope to emulate your talent even as you say you are a beginner. Im for surely a beginner when it comes to painting in PS. My intention as an environment artist is to practice and master architecture in perspective and setup similar scenes like you have in this image.
Thank you for your inspiration!

Thanks Chris :), well it's all about the default templates that proposes blogger, i agree on the fact the images look too small on blogger and i've tried a new template recently, so it's Minima Stretch ( second line, first box in the templates modifications ).
You can rearrange the images when you upload them, stretching them on sides but anyway with this model-template, images can get much more bigger and it changes life completely! this may be because all the part on the right takes too much place and with this template it's reduced and let you more freedom in arranging your artworks.
I hope it'll helps you:)

Thanks Dark Knight. I didn't even realize I had done a four seasons thing, but you're absolutely right about that :)
I'm definitely better for being involved. On the one hand, its difficult having weaknesses exposed, but that's how we grow, right? Like this time around I was really inspired by Chris Stapleton's perspective work and Revenbo's forms and shapes. Sime's textures and atmosphere are top notch. And I feel like these are all areas I can improve on.
Thanks all, this was really awesome!

Oh, about the weakneses exposed , I personaly feel like in order for me to really really care about something it has to be secret, when its done and I probably wont work on it anymore, I will post it and people can stick there teeth into it , I post in the critique center often, I just find if it gets critiqued when its not finished its bouncing around in other peoples craniums,... not really a suprise anymore;)....anyways this aint lounge, but I think we earned a dabble of chit chat.
