What I can say by now without having seen the reference is that you paint too much with your brain and too less with your eyes. You painted the image you have in your mind as a mouth, a nose and so on. It all looks idealized. Try to look closer to what there really is and not what a mouth/nose/eye should look like. See my point? Hope that helps.
