Looking through the sketchbooks here on CA is pretty damn interesting, some people really post some awesome stuff in there and some people's studies are just pure works of art in and of themselves, no question about it. There are a lot of pieces I have seen that I would love to own, and for which I'd gladly pay postage if whoever drew it would want to give it away, and I'm sure there are others here who feel the same way.

Personally (not that my sketches are awesome or anything) my studies don't mean that much to me and if anybody would want them I would gladly give them away, in hopes that some of the people on here who are actually awesome artists or pro's feel the same way, I propose that we could try and get some giveaways going. If you have some cool sketches or drawings laying around, or do some studies that come out nice and you think someone might be interested, why don't you put them up for grabs? It would be cool to have some artwork trading hands, it's something completely different to own an original compared to looking at something on a computer screen and I for one wouldn't mind getting a collection of awesome drawings from other artists going, it would be great inspiration and just generally awesome.

I propose three simple rules to keep things fair: 1. Artwork must be free 2. Recipient pays postage 3. First-come, first-served.
What do you think, anyone feeling generous?

I think there is already something similar in place. I can't look for the thread right now as my internet is being funny and it was hard enough to get it to open this. But it's something with mail. Artists mail their work to others and do an exchange so they get something nice through the mail that's not bills.

Yeah, I've seen it, but that's for trading artwork with each other. It's great too, but I thought it would be cool to have somewhere were people put all kinds of stuff up and you can go in and pick and choose, like a catalogue almost. I imagine a lot of people don't have the time to make specific artworks for people and do trades, but maybe they already have a bunch of drawings laying around that they'd be willing to give away. I dunno.

Yeah. There's two different things going on that are similar... the CA secret santa, and grief's mail exchange.

You might be best off just to PM the artist in question - lots of artist sell sketches for reduced prices compared to finished, original work. I dunno about asking for work for free, though, unless you are REALLY good buddies with the person. It can be kind of rude, and lots of these folks make their living from their art here. You're almost always better off offering something in exchange...

Hi Crass :)

Basically I agree with what's already been said but thought I'd give my take on this:

Rule of thumb: NEVER ask for art free.

I say better even if someone is your friend to offer some form of payment - that way it gives the artist the opportunity to be generous but the value of the work is respected.

Plus having a place full of free sketches for anybody to choose (that are obviously by artist's good enough to be wanted) means it could be easily taken advantage of for monetary gain by those taking the art. If there is an exchange it protects the situation somewhat as there is something of value going both ways :)

I'm not saying you're a bad person - I just don't feel this is a wise idea or respectful really.

Hope something works out for you to get hold of some of the pieces you like!
