Round #162 Holiday Dinner with the Harkonnens

Topic:
Holiday Dinner with the Harkonnens

Holiday Dinner with the Harkonnens-- The various fall/winter holidays are almost upon us. Because we have participants from all over the globe on ConceptArt.Org, let's forget the usual earthly holidays we think of at this time of year. In lieu of doing a Thanksgiving round or a Christmas round, let's imagine a holiday on a fictional alien planet. Let's spend the holidays with the House of Harkonnen, who live on the planet Giedi Prime in Frank Herbert's Dune Universe. Giedi Prime is known to be largely over industrialized, polluted, and denatured... but not entirely so. Any native creature that still survives on Giedi Prime must be a fairly robust species, and rare, to serve at a holiday dinner of nobility.

Your task this round is to design a new alien creature, indigenous to the planet Giedi Prime, which the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen and his family would eat at a traditional holiday meal. If you are not familiar with the Dune Universe, you should try a little research on Wikipedia. The Harkonnens are the really evil villains of the book (although one could argue there are different degrees of bad guys all over the Dune books...)... The Harkonnens are really decadent, really sadistic, really terrible. I think their character should be reflected both in what they choose to eat and how they prepare it.

This will be a two part challenge. I want to see two illustrations with your entry. The first should be your new alien creature design as it would appear in life, in the wild, before it is hunted down and killed (or perhaps, as they are farmed by the Harkonnen clan.) The second illustration should show the 'serving suggestion.' Depict this creature as it would be prepared and served by the Harkonnens' chefs as the main course for a holiday dinner. Think about this for a moment. The Harkonnens are nobility, but they're also entirely perverse. Really try to have fun with this one. You should give equal thought to both the design of the living alien creature as well as how it would be served for dinner. If you find yourself short of time and still want to enter, remember that this is still Creature of the Week first. Focus on the living creature.

Because of the Thanksgiving weekend coming up, as well as the two part illustration, I am going to give you a little more than a week to complete this. Instead of this being due Tuesday December 1st, I'll make the deadline Sunday December 6th.

Deadline:
Sunday December 6th, 2009

Finals go here: ="http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=174176"http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=174176

note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours or more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)

Nice. Now let's just see what that floating fat man would serve up for dinner!

Incidentally, I realize we usually have a rule against giving a creature props, accessories, etc. In the case of the second illustration of the cooked and served creature, of course you're allowed to include whatever culinary pots, plates, utensils, garnishes, side dishes, etc you think is appropriate to present the Harkonnen Holiday Main Course!

nebezial that is disgusting. lol... genius touch with the "drumstick" treatment on those spines. But really, that thing is nasty. Nice job.

I was thinking of Geidi Prime "meatballs". Violent, predatory, dangerous, flesh-eating meatballs.

Or possibly something that feeds the whole Harkonnen Clan.... like "Titantagon Tongue".

Really can't decide.

first sketche of the desert orchid.
This time i want to try to have an more fixed concept before starting to work more seriously on the drawings....think sometimes i got a problem to decide what i want to do exactly and loose lots of time changing my concept around... so here it goes :
The desert orchid is extremly rare and valuable. The orchid-like looking mouth of the creature sticks out of the sand and is supposed to have beautyful colors and different shapes in each exemplar. An magnificent sight in the arid desert.
the body is very ugly but the creature is harmless, sad looking and even got some inteligence. They have an complex way to communicate with each other and grow near the spice.Their exact role in the complex ecosystem of the desert planet is yet to be studied....
the harconnen catch them when they encounter one and rip the orchid off to decorate their palace. they keep the agonizing creature until the day of the feast and open the soft-body shells to eat the creature alive.
This harkonnen are really evil and twisted so they gain pleasure in the suffering of the poor creature. The guts of the creature are fried in boiling oil and condimented with the dried orchid-petals which are rich in spice.
its a bit like a fondue...

oh !
iīm wondering if my creature is from the wrong planet ----
gedi-prime is not the desert planet ???? arrg - somebody can enlighten me ???

btw : inever read the books - big error of mine - but i saw the movie several times-

oh darn it - i just went looking for gedii-prime and yeah its an industrial planet and stuff - got to change my concept ---arrgl
the various planets are one of the more confusing part of the movie if you didnīt read the books ---
i think maybe i can keep my critter and just change his story- the one in the left down corner looks a bit aquatic - so it could be some kind of toxic-mud-lurking thingy sticking his orchid-snout out of the pools of foul water around the harconnens factorys.......
what do you think??? ----- help highly appreciated !!!

Steve Somers

nebezial - looking forward to where you take that image. Looks juicy even now.

jspangler - Yes, a nice big feast! I'd like to see the 500 foot table they lay that turkey on. My only crit is that the beast is still pretty whale-ish.

Vaghauk - Since there's a few extra days on this it may be a good opportunity to research and draw before you commit to one idea. I never read the books either, but any author that develops a whole universe is rare so it's good to acquaint ourselves with their work. I learned a lot about Merlin and Arthurian legends on that last round. Nice sketches though, no matter what their planet of origin.

I'm trying to be a blank slate on this right now, gonna do some reading, some watching and some drawing and see where it leads. For those of you who didn't know, there was a Dune movie planned by Alejandro Jodorowsky (he did Holy Mountain, El Topo, Santa Sangre - all weird amazing films) there were designs by Moebius, Giger, and Salvador Dali was even supposed to act in it - would've been a whole different look, very surreal and far more colorful and decadent than Lynch's version.

jspangler
November 25th, 2009, 04:08 PM
Steve Somers - You think I should go with the Titantagon over the "meatballs"? I'm finding myself thinking more and more about the big bastard anyway so I think I will stick with him.

The concept is that he has a large, tentacled tongue that secrets a viscous fluid which it drags through the toxic seas gathering all sorts of delicious waste, bacteria, algae, mutated fish, etc, etc before slurping it all back into its cavernous maw. Occasionally they lumber onto land and do the same thing through forests, cities, whatever is around. They are not particular.

But he is still too "Whaleish" ... I'm going to keep developing. Thanks for the feedback.

[QUOTE=jspangler;2528937]Steve Somers - You think I should go with the Titantagon over the "meatballs"? QUOTE]

The meatballs are cool too, but the big guy seems like more of a challenge to work out when you show how they eat him, like imagine some whale size fillets cut out of that bad boy? Or if they eat the blubber like Eskimos do - Maybe a Harkonnen in the background doing some scimshaw on a tooth? Maybe a last supper style picture with this massive meat pile arcing over the whole table - the mind races.

One last update and then Im OOT for the holiday (so no COW work till next week). I am working to move the Titantagon away from too much of a whale and make him his own "thing". I'm liking this version...

Happy Holidays everyone!

First look of pencils. My art has been pretty lacking of inspiration lately. So I'm forcing myself to do this COW in the hopes it can get me back on track.

My idea is two-fold for this creature. My thoughts are that the creature has human-like qualities and features as well as a very tasty tip of the tail cherry like ball.

I picture the Harkonnens as people that would delight in the torturing of the creature due to the human-like characteristics as well as the fact that when in pain the creature sounds like a crying human baby.

Once tired of the torture the Harkonnens will cut the tip of the tail off to serve as an orderve, leaving the creature to slowly bleed to death and die. During holidays hundreds of these creatures will be killed to serve the Harkonnens and there guests.

steve somers : yeah - guess iīm going to research and scribble a bit more on this - its really a fun and tasty topic.... :) somehow the orchid idea doesnīt fit geidi - prime...but it could be what the harconnens eat on their holidays when they have picnic on desertplanet.... :D back with some more sketches soon.

Messing with the background some. I'm horrible with BGs and almost never do them as you can see.

Vaghauk
November 25th, 2009, 07:52 PM
okay - i did some homework and found something interesting. The Slig -a creature mix of slug and pig that was emperor shaddam corrinos IV favorite meal. The slig was genetically engeneered - so i imagine the harconnen could engeneer something similar for them to hunt and eat..... lets see where this leads ... :)

Vaghauk
November 25th, 2009, 11:36 PM
steve somers : Yeah... - that movie would have been something.Jodorovski is totally crazy ! btw : !i just read that neill bloomkamp (district9) might direct the new Dune movie - peter berg is off the project.... yay ! :)

after doing some more research i decided to change my innicial orchid idea to something more fitting for giedi prime and the harkonnen.I got really marveld by the complexity of this universe - i really donīt know why i never read the books !! iīm ashamed of getting it all wrong on my first try - but the orchid could give an splendid Arakis-creature...or not? ;D
first requirement is having fun with this one so here it comes - the uddshlugg

nebezial: Nice sketch- that will be surely look fantastic in the end.

Vaghauk: Also some very nice ideas- I like your last sketches the most, somehow.

Mike D: Looks also great: Also the background looks nice! The story sounds really disgusting- that would fit the Harkonnens to do that!

jspangler: Nice looking creature as well- looks a little bit like a whale.

Also did some sketches of my creature... I hope I have enough time for this round :)

Hey yo
Sketching out some ideas. I had to watch the movie 1st.
Harkonnen are living in an industrial nightware, covered with steel. They would definitely factory farm. So I'm going with that.
The Harkonnen love liquids and black stuff, like crazy. Vladimir has a Collagen issue, big time. So I thinking my creature would provide the drinks, for the feast.
It seems to be a insect that used to fly before factory farming. It just hangs its cage getting nourishment pumped into its feeler trunk.
I don't think they would ever kill this beast, just torture with sucking tubes for the special occasion.
I think the beasts juices should intoxicate them as-well, but I'm not sure if you can see that in the monster sketch.

(edit) I deleted my post to downsize the image. Srry for post such high rez.
Refined the creature (yet to be named)

Vaghauk Love the process and ink
Mike D Your sketch-work is beautiful! Intricate !

November 27th, 2009, 03:37 PM
My first WIPs on this subject. these are very sketchy, I hope I'll find time to to finish them.

My general idea is that the Harkonnen has been keeping these creatures imprisoned for generations, pumping them full of tasty fluids, making their life a living hell, with the sole purpose of feeding the Harkonnen at their yearly festivities.

Any feedback appreciated :)

Nebezial you're off to a good start too, pepps you got some good sketches in there too...this is gonna be a good round, I just rewatched Dune and remembered how weird that movie was, great stuff, great topic.

Hello everyone , thats the first C.O.W. im participating so please be nice ^^'
Im not sure if i can complete that Picture , but ill try.
The idea is that the Harkonnen like to Torture what they eat so the Creature ive drawn is (supposed to be) still alive , while they are eating its Innards. =)

Ah, there are some nice new things around :)

Fantasy Jack: A very disgusting idea to eat the creature while it still lives- but very fitting for the Harkonnens.

RayTwicket: Nice idea to give the creature an appearance of a turkey.. The textures also looks nice so far.

esteen: Creepy looking creature here- but I think the creature has to be found also in the left ecosystem of Giedi Prime? However, I like the skull-like head here. Also the perspective looks nice (especially of the second one).

Mr.Wittmann: A sand creature- somehow a had a similar idea first, but I decided this would be a more fitting creature for Arrakis itself, not for Giedi Prime- I like your design nonetheless and I'm sure it will still fit to the planet in the end.

Obacmar: Nice sketches so far.

pepps: Also some nice sketches and a pretty scary looking head..

Carnifex: A very nice idea- I'm sure any creature that still lives on Giedi Prime has to hide itself somehow to survive.

..aaaand: Another update of my creature! I didn't have that much time for it yet (had to finish something else), but I'm pretty sure I can still finish it on time :)

What's up cowsters? Just wanted to come by and drop a line and say that I am def trying to get down with this little challenge. I also want to drop a link so some of you can get to know me and hopefully be inspired some.

We are all internet bound here so it's not like many know each other on the personal tip if you know what I mean. Also I want to put this link out because it shows some of the cows I dropped being featured, which is proof in the pudding that anyone can do something with this here. You don't have to be discouraged cause your work isn't the best, it never will be. I never won a cow and probably never will but at least gets some recognition in this crazy world we live in.

Big things are popping in Miami Florida where I am located so I am trying to make the best with the time. Anyway, enjoy and much love you all.

Thought I'll try this one. Love Dune, and it sounds fun. My idea is a rat like monkey creature. One that lives of waste from the humans, and like rats eat most anything and very hardy. Don't know if I can manage to finish. Am pretty busy. Well, here's my initial sketches.

Mr.Wittmann: Oh noes.. Now you make me feel really guilty- I like the concept of your creature, I really do.. and there is no reason why it whouldn't live on Giedi Prime. Giedi Prime is not a sand planet (like Arrakis), it's a more or less fully industrialised planet- but still there are some wild places left. Your creature could have found a ecological niche there. Don't worry, you can explain that still in the description.
Besides.. The chance of surviving on Giedi Prime is much higher under the earth than above the earth, if you ask me.

Tommoy: Nice creature design here.

iamdio08: Really a weird looking creature design here... looks a little bit like a palm. :)

scorge: Really nice design of your creature- it has almost something from an undead look.

Dozeren: Nice idea here- there is surely enough things around for it to eat.

Another update of my creature- the right side gets really bloody somehow...

I have to regretfully bow out on this round. Just not enough time. And to be honest if I do find time it would be better for me to try and tackle "The Morrigan" for CHOW since my portfolio could use less monsters and more females.

Orm Irian - I like the insect-like iridescence that your creatures possess. And the egg sacks within are a nice touch.

Scorge - That thing is nasty. Only a Harkonnen would consider eating its flesh. Nice design.

Tommoy - Its cool for me to see people's work from round to round when I am not previously familiar with their style. I really like the "character" that your creatures possess. Nice work.

this is the grown-up adult version of the udderslug. The legs become useless when the creature grows. The harkonnen feed the udderslug until it grows huge like this. These first sketches are a bit cartoony- i think iīm going for a bit more realism when i start to paint this.

Vaghauk: Looks pretty cool, your creature, but as you said, a little bit slime and stuff like that would be great.

scorge: Awesome, as always- I really like the dangerous look of the transport-robot, also the concept of the creature itself looks brilliant.

Tommoy: Looks nice, I love the lighting in your second picture (cooking process)- your creature concept might still need some shadows if you ask me.

zypherax: I can't help you there, since I'm also a Photoshop user- but I'm sure Corel Painter also has an option like 'change size' or something like that.

Vaghauk: that's an ambitious serving piece, you're putting in some serious work, I like that we can now see how large that creature is, I thought it was much smaller until now. :) looking forward to seeing how it all turns out.
Orm Irian: good work, I see you've posted in the finals. I was going to ask if you ever used the smudge tool? it might help to smooth out some of your textures and blend them together better, like in you serving bowl for instance. good work over all

wow - i hope there is still some time to finish .... M.Jaecks - some more hours please ....? :)
here is some progress on the dinner party...
i changed the slave in the foreground cause i thought he was drawing to much attention ... like him better like this.Somehow the arcs in the background are still a bit too boring-
got to add lots of details - going to be an long night ....

Hey guys. Deadline today, poll tomorrow, time willing. There are only four entries posted. Are we having a holiday slow down?

The next challenge will be regular, weekly type.

Thanks

the wip section is really quite empty this time.... i worked until seven in the morning to match the deadline - looking now at the pic i would probably scribble-dibble a bit more - but i let it like it is. Was extermly fun to do this one - now i defenetly got to read the books .This is my last entry this year - got tons of work waiting - have to earn some money to buy myself an christmas present....maybe an dune collection... :)

I was really not happy that I had to drop out of this last round. Can't wait to see what the next COW will be...

Yeah, I think you are right, RayTwicket.. I probably should use the smudge tool more often, but I always fear I will lose many details through that. I guess it needs to be used wisely.

It's a small round indeed, but I really like your picture, Vaghauk. Especially the second picture looks very interesting with the Harkonnens, slave and the food: Really a well done picture. :)

I will try to enter the next rounds as well, but I'm also quite busy at the moment..

NICE!
glad to be able to share techniques that people actually find useful.

Orm Irian: keep everything in layers, if you maybe smudge your base layer(s) and then add a new layer on top of that to bring back some of the details you might have lost by smudging. Like Vaghauk said it's a time saver.

I'm surprised how lame it is at the moment in Cow, while Chow is boiling from activity.

Vaghaux: nice concept, the presence of the Harkonnens bring back memories of the film. Only on a second look I noticed the 'tap' on the person on the right. I think the bright green background distracts a little, maybe desaturate it a bit.
Raytwicket: lovely detailed creature, specially the belly looks great. The perspective on the armor plates on its back is a little off.
Orm Irian: I like the concept, some parts are hard to read though. Also I think you should use a wider range of values.

I will try out a new technique (using the smudge tool more) for my next entry, probably.

Argh, you're right, Tommoy. I really had problems to describe in English what I actually planned to write... I worked it over a little bit now- I hope it's better now. Also, I need to start drawing the pictures in greytones first- I think it would help to get some variety into the values.

Tommoy : thanx for the crit !! - think i let it like it is for now ,since i allready posted it to the finals...
Raytwicked : fun creature - nicely painted ! i agree with the armor plates being off perspective - and the background turned out a bit in conflict with the critter -but all in all itīs a nice piece !
Orm Irian : i like that you painted the creature from different angles that we can see how the critter works. Also the overall design is quite original.

think this was the most deserted cow i saw in the last months - but we got some very nice stuff going - thats for sure !

@vaghauk: the dinner raping looks awesome but how i said already, the creature wont survive in the wild.. even snails would be more dangerous

some more legs would be great

Vaghauk
December 9th, 2009, 04:04 PM
masterstryke : yeah - it would be awfully slowly - but in the wip section i posted an drawing of an youngster udderslug which are still able to walk cause their udder is not so swallowed.... maybe i should write this together with the picture - the harkonnen feed them until they grow so fat ... :) any way - slugs also survive - without legs .... and it got some spikes on the back.... so i think it could survive in giedi prime why not ? we got them here on earth ....without legs .... ! :D and the objective is not them being dangerous - they got to be tasty -----

anyone know of any other sites that have these kind of weekly events?

All righty. Only nine entries. >sniff< I was holding out for a couple more. Ah well.

Steve those paintings are loverly. I would have taken that alien as a Harkonnen meal easily. And that landscape looks so painterly. Really fresh.
