ROUND #180:: The STEAMPUNK HAREM

DESCRIPTION

The STEAMPUNK HAREM

They are pampered and preened for the Sultan and Sultana. Doused with pungent oils, washed with lavender and cinnamon scented perfumes, their skins perfect and their complexions refined and painted to reflect the whim of their master and mistress.

They are treated with respect and adoring attention, but they are prisoners; birds in a gilded-cage. They are the concubines of the king and queen, the harem slaves of oriental fantasy. But the world these particular chattels inhabit is a Steampunk world.

This week design a Steampunk harem boy or girl. Either gender, it’s up to you; and environment is also at your own discretion. This harem is fantasy, and we suggest looking at odalisques and Victorian Orientalist painting as inspiration, but keep in mind their costume and world they inhabit is Steampunk.

If you’re not familiar with Steampunk, just type it into Google and browse the enormous amount of reference there is. Some reference for Orientalist art here:

http://www.orientalist-art.org.uk/

http://www.orientalist-art.org.uk/harem.html

http://www.alloilpaint.com/orientalist/p1.htm

Also remember this is a forum for all ages, so please bear that in mind in your design.

Thank you.

------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?

--------------------

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/ChowPics/frame.jpg
:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:

THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling. >:{
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.

I didn't want to push the steampunk features too far. I thought the outfit should feel comfortable, so I leaned on the oriental fashion. But I also included some sort of victorian neck tie, buttons, stripes, and patterns.

I conceived a steam machine that dispenses a very addictive gas. It's widely used in the harems to smash the willpower of the slaves, specially the males.

Yay I finished my first CHOW. And I thought I wasn't going to make it.

Pretty unhappy about this one. Think I bit off WAY more than I could chew. No where near the level of detail I wanted to do...and considering this is only my second proper go at painting in Photoshop....Eh...wish I had more time! But that is the point of CHOW to get stuff done in a limited timeframe...so I hope to only get better from here.
Ahh so if I get cut, well, I wont be cut! Lol ;)

Thanks for the super duper excellento topic!! And the entries are all wonderful. Yay!!:yayca:

Well. I have to say I haven't finished a CHOW in a long long long time. Yay follow-through! Ahem. Anyway... It turned out darker than I thought it would but every attempt I made at lightening the pic failed miserably. I guess I either get lots of color or lots of detail... but not both. Something to play with, apparently.

Final and WIPS.

fantabulous entries! :yayca:

The Sultan has constructed these walking mechanical beds so he doesn’t have to run to each of the girls but can have them safely escorted by the machine. This also means they can enjoy the comfort only a real bed can give anywhere in the palace. Why not take the bed outside and "relax" by the pool!

All new girls get a mask painfully attached to their face, the Sultan does not wish to see their faces, it makes them less human and therefore okay to not treat them as ones.

Well, I was completely aimless with this image, just applying things that come to mind from both harem and steampunk, and in the end i just threw random things here and there, and apprently managed to copy the red-one-eye-thing from one of the people who has posted their final already. Not on purpose but the odds, the odds are stacked against me :D

In my harem are:
Ferstenger: just pure art. Jealous making loose use of unknown brushes. Inventive steampunk implementation. Sweet atmosphere.
Jessiebean: had some doubts about this one but the total environment pulled me in. Looking closer I still don't understand the difference between the amazing elements like background and face and for example the belly (poor rendering in comparison with the rest!) and the legs witch still seem a little off.
Poshspice: this would be my number one girl, she is steaming from sexyness. You have rendered the hell out of her, so much smooth detailing, its a lust for the eye. Goddamn perfect face.

Overall great round guys&dolls!.

What is the deal on voting for yourself?! I've seen a few who do it each week not cool.

Voted on
PxlSlayer - love the delicate face and seeing the learning process and improvements through the WIPS - brilliant!

Anastasky - Lovely image - lots of detail captured Steampunk and Harem.

Tommoy - Again got the brief to a T and its beautiful.

Artofinca - scary harem, love the edgy style.

Posh - captured what I was going for and its a perfect image for the brief.

Lots of fab entries and the scores show it!

Thanks again for all the support and crits all.

Nice stuff. I really like a lot of them.

Daestwan had the best lighting/mood. I would've loved to see more design in the shadow/light pattern though, like a gothic windowpane type pattern, but the colors are excellent.
Artemis was my favorite costume design.
Gunnarson would've been my favorite overall, but honestly it's too light to see for me. I wish you drew a little darker you have a great technique that's almost lost in the lightness.
Jessibean awesome rendering, that curtain, and the atmosphere is woohoo.
Poshspice damn right on awesome!

The deal is it is disrespectful to other artists to vote for yourself. Anyone who does will have a vote deducted from their total.

Voted for: ArthemisIX, Nebezial, Fersteger, JessiBean, Poshspice

This seemed to be a difficult CHOW for many people. There were, technically, some very nice done pieces, but the "Steampunk" elements seemed more of an overlay onto a "Harem" piece than an integral part of the concept. So a lot of the entries didn't, to me, seem successful in meeting the brief.

Favorite "non-Steampunky" piece: Soultek.

Vineris' entry, with it's simplified gear-motifs in the background, seemed more like an idea for a Steampunk Tarot deck. Which might be an interesting CHOW someday.

(Googling "Steampunk Tarot", I find it's an idea that's been thought of a number of times. But attempts at getting a group of artists together and coordinated to actually produce a Steampunk deck seem to wither on the vine. So if a Steampunk Tarot deck is ever actually produced, I suspect it will be the work of one -- probably obsessive-compulsive -- artist, rather than a group endeavor.)

ummm... in the most respectful way possible, can someone inform me why I didn't get on the poll? I thought I did everything right...was it just a taste issue, was I off topic, was I late? Or with all the entries did I just slip through the cracks?

Whatever it is no hard feelings, I had a lot of fun on this, and there were so many great entries. And all the help was wonderful.

I was wowed by fersteger! I like the painting style, and it evoked some feelings, a thing i find can be hard to do.. I decided to only vote for you, seeing as i thought it was a clear #1.:) thanks for the comment aswell, I need to learn how best to document stuff... and perhaps we have different settings to our screens?

poshspice, fantastical rendering and spot on to the topic! The same goes for JessiBean, love the warm colors!
I liked yours Granmassa, the style of the character, but a more.. sculpted out bodey, I'm bad at explaining, but rounding the shapes out for that 3d feel, is what it needs I think. It kinda floats in to the background a bit now.
deadhead, very cool to see the oils in here! thanks for posting it up, its inspiring!

Fersteger and Poshspice's absolutely took my breath away, voted for a few others as well. I think the fact that there was so many many anatomy issues for so many people, even though they could render well, was why I didn't vote for more.

Interestingly, if a piece is done well (like Nebezial's) so that everything is handled well with manipulating where our eye goes, you don't notice the hand so much. It's almost un-rendered, however the proportions are correct so we automatically don't mind losing it out of our view. The thing is, when a painting isn't so well-handled, and someone goes in and renders the hell out of a incorrect hand or bad ellipse in the props, well, it's really obvious and the errors are "louder" than whatever rendering skill there may be.

It's an amazing piece, but an incentive to start the whole CHOW vs Illustration discussion again as well :p On a CHOW-level it breaks a few rules or at least is on the brink. 3/4 rule? Clarity of design?
I'm not nagging though because I'm all for creative freedom and as long as it give us these great pieces of art: more power to us. :)
