View Full Version : Starting to Walk - Geti's Sketchbook

Currently I'm going through the motions of developing my style, working on studies, basically learning to draw.
I'll post up individual works as they come, Hopefully I can make this a regular thing. My deviantArt ID is "ForsakenGeti", for individual comments on the images.
I need to start doing more anatomical studies, and studies in general.
Criticism and Tips heartily appreciated

Someone "requested" I do some beards. Very happy with 2 and 4, in sequential order.

You have a great style going there. The thick outlines make me think comic book. My one critique is that your characters seem to all be very similarly posed, mixing it up a bit will make your characters more interesting and can help give each a unique personality.

Haha, i know.. I've discovered posemaniacs recently and am using that to get some confidence happening with posing, which should help quite a lot.
Hopefully I'll be able to get something new up before I go overseas for three weeks this tuesday, but i've got an exam on monday so it mightn't happen.
Very glad you like the style :)

A request from someone, Refined in V2 because they didn't like the apparent "crotch armour". I cleaned it up a little as well, but not too much.
Last one from me before I depart, back in three weeks or so.

Cool ideas so far, I think you should keep doing drawings from imagination. However, in addition I would like to see some Bridgman studies (check out the book Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life), some still lifes and figure drawings, some gesture studies, and anatomy studies and sketches from life. Anatomy is something you should study every day too. That alone should give you plenty to draw for hours daily, and I don't think that you need to worry about style yet. I think it will come out on its own. I'd also recommend doing some master studies of the masters that you like.

Indeed, I'll do some research and studies whilst I'm gone.

Lores version.
Dedicated to Prometheus|ANJ for being an inspiration.
Will get sketches etc, up, but I didn't get as many as I wanted done. A few good ones though, and I have some books now as well. Would love some criticism on this piece though, it's for a 72hour contest on dA.

Enjoyed doing it. Depth of field was a bit of a pain, but I found a good method in the end. I cleaned it up as much as I could quickly, to actually have some line quality this time :P. Needs more detail, but it was meant to be a quick piece and ended up eating half my night. anyway, comments/criticism/raging are all good.
Sorry for embedding the image <_< no time to upload. Comments and credit on the dA page. Still need to get those studies up.

I have a hard time telling what's going on in a lot of your sketches. This could be intentional, but you should probably consider it when making style choices in the future.

Random Sketches:

love the shading style in this one, actually:

EXILE work.
Got dared to take up Arne's (Prometheus|ANJ on here) EXILE design document as a game project. The game is originally by Superior Software/Acornsoft.

A WIP of the protagonist, with some plants and terrain.

OTHERWISE project:
This is a minecraft and dwarf fortress inspired game project, with heavy artistic influence from Arne, Oryx, and Cyanide and Happiness.

The game design premise. Pretty rough.

A Redscarf, my most complete faction idea at the moment (Basic humans)

Another one, with a mohawk and a rifle. Bit Nihilistic.

A cutebold. I'm thinking of putting a skivvy on him, to bring some colour into it.

I'm sick of generic fantasy orcs. Mine isn't much more interesting, but I'm working on it :P
http://www.deviantart.com/download/174189282/Otherwise_Rough__Orc_Idea_WIP_by_ForsakenGeti.jpg

Sorry for the roughness of all the OTHERWISE stuff. Need to get a refined Red Scarf concept finalised so I can work with them for a prototype.

Heyyyy, rockin' sketchbook here! Your ideas and game concepts are tons of fun, I would love to play your Exile re-design. Reminds me of Blaster Master, now that game is awesome. You remind me of a budding prometheus|ANJ, heh! On that note, your work would definitely benefit by having cleaner line-work, your ideas, colors, and concepts are great, but your sketchy lines make things feel very un-finished. You've come a long way since that first post though, I'm really looking forward to seeing where you go from here. Keep it up!

I think you may want to clean up your line work unless it's a part of your style.

Geti
September 18th, 2010, 10:55 PM
It's only been working itself into a part of my style because I'm working with quite a lot of time pressure at the moment (finishing year of high school) so whenever I find some time to draw the last thing I feel like doing is cleaning up my lines when the masses are where I want them, but I do agree. I've been hearing that from a lot of people, so it's very likely a good idea to heed it a little.

Glad you like it, it's actually been prototyped but I think it would be more fun with random terrain rather than set levels, so I'll have to find some way of incorporating that into it next time I revisit the code :) I've been doing a bunch of work for KAG at the moment, but here's a misc "B-sides" sketch for a game me and a buddy are slowly chipping away at.

June 9th, 2011, 07:54 PM
Well, hopefully I can find the time over the next few weeks. Landscape studies are interesting for me as I usually do character work in games, and if I am doing environment work it's usually done with tiles and assets pieced together, not as a whole. I'd love to work on just painting with raw colour, like in jamajurabaev's (and kinnas') work.
