to a daily sketchbook.. will definitely hit this with more sketches as i do em... for one of my classes, im required to fill a 100-pg sketchbook by the end of the semester :) that should be a mandatory requirement as long as you're at the school..

Here's the introductory image:

well the first place to start is learning about color families, color harmonies, complimentary colors etc. and just about any painting book worth looking at will have something to say about that.. Andrew Loomis' Creative Illustration has a whole section on color, and you can find that online easily.. the academy of art college's library webpage has it available to look at online for free.. As youre learning the theories, put em to the test with good ol brush mileage... no amount of reading will substitute for constant practice.. i know the basics about color, and there's still a lot to learn.. most of it just comes from experimentation.. one thing never to forget: Values is key.. bad value control = bad color

you're getting really gangster with those watercolors main. the last one of the guy with the headphones was really impressive, hats off. the one chalk drawing got a lil muddy for my tastes, i wanna know where that other arm is ;) but you should try getting just a small piece of canvas an using it for a rubbing tool when you do drawings with chalk or charcoal, it works wonders, then just go back in there with a magic rub and pull out those lights.
the line drawings are really coming along as well. the gorillas got a little flat in spots, but nothing that can't be taken care of wiht a lil more patience (i suffer the same problem sometimes)

good work

Main Loop

Siskol: A small piece of canvas huh? interesting, ive never seen that before.. what does it do? hehe i didnt get to the arm so i dunno where it is.. The flatness of the gorillas comes from the quality of the reference.. lots of dark shadows... im a bit interested in the use of flatness for composition, so you might see me intentionally flatten stuff out sometimes.. good eye, thanks for the critiques.. its more appreciated than just kudos

damn main....

i haven't scoped your thread in a bit and lemme say i'm REALLY impressed with your progression. you've gotten really gangster with those watercolors, and that painting of the primates is hot!

but your penils and pens could use some love man..
the shading is getting flat and muddy in a lot of 'em and you're still generalizing forms and features here and there (but who doesn't, right?) (i just thought i'd bring it to your attention if it wasn't already)

but overall man, very impressive,

peace,

love the colors in your last acrylic! Actually what size are those? Either you use a very big brush, or the canvas is just small. If they're huge, what size are your brushes you're working with?

Jeff Jaws: These were all done in my 8x10 sketchbook.. i was using a 1/2 inch sablette in all of them.. only 1 brush, which aint really the smartest thing to do.. i taped various types of paper into the page.. interesting to see how the acrylic reacts with the paper, which was different everytime..

Nold: Dont be afraid to layer! Since acrylic dries so quick, you can go back into areas without lifting up too much of the paint, as long as the layer isnt too thick.. i was able to get about 3 layers in about a half hour.. try that with any other medium:D
