Books are great. I've read tons of tutorials, and books from the library and stuff. They help a ton. Most don't improve your skill by reading it, they just get you modivated to go draw. We've got a booklist here at the "Middle Class".
If you can take a life drawing coarse that would probably be great. If not, draw from reference and still lifes.
I think that drawing from what you see is the best way of learning. Books like Bridgman's teach you anatomy but I use the lessons learned from reference drawing more.
I've found while doing reference drawings and still lifes, your imagination starts to get weak. You've gotta keep it active. Drawing from you mind is good, and the DSG is good if you have "artist block".
