[Howie]

Hi everyone, I have an old sketchbook here ( http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=101819&page=3 ) but it hasn't been updated in a vvverry long time and I feel like I have evolved a lot since then so why not start a more current sketchbook?

I'm currently a student at Uarts in Philadelphia studying illustration and I hope to be working as a concept artist one day for a video game or movie studio. I have about a year and half left before I go out in the real world so I'm trying to get my skills up to a respectable level before then.

these are three sketches for a school assignment where we have to pick a quote from a list that was given and then interpret the quote.

the quote is, "Midway in our life's journey, I went astray from the straight road and woke to find myself alone in a dark wood."

Im really liking your landscapes, so nice and abstract! cool work! I think your portraits are dark and moody, with some minor anatomical issues-for example the guy drinking alchol, his head is either to big or his body is too small.

This was a school assignment where we had to pick a short story and then come up with an illustration to accompany it. I chose "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury.

You can read it here http://www.wssb.wa.gov/content/Classrooms/tate/content/freshman/All%20Summer%20In%20a%20Day/story.htm , but to sum it up its about a class of nine year old kids who live on a fictional version of Venus. It rains all of the time except for every seven years when the sun comes out for one day. It follows one girl named Margot who gets teased and eventually is locked in a closet by her classmates during the period the sun comes out.

I didn't want to give anything away with my image because I imagine its the first thing the viewer is going to see before reading the story. Hopefully after reading the story the image will take on more meaning.

For school we were told to make an assignment for ourselves that deals with the market we want to go into so i just turned one of the CHOWS into my assignment. Ahh, thats cool, i quite like the atmosphere youve created there!
the shirt bottom seems to end a bit sharp and sudden compared to the painting style (imo) but otherwise youve done a great job ;) keep it up!

this was my first go at the Gaia Chow. When I tried to move on from this stage i felt like i had hit a dead end. I'm happy with where it is in terms of atmosphere and color but the design/drawing feels pretty weak. It seems obvious to just start with a sketch before going into the coloring and rendering but when I try and do that my images have less interesting compositions and feel overly tight. I need to have that spontaneity from random brushstrokes to build atmosphere but i need to have a sketch to make sure things like proportions, anatomy and perspective are taken care of.

Has anyone else had a similar problem to this?

WHat? How can there have been no comments for so many updates? You have some really nice stuff here. Your photostudies are looking good, and you have a diverse range of things in here.

The only thing I noticed (bad thing that is, and I saw lots of good things first) was that your figures when done without ref look very stiff. I think you would really benefit from a bunch of gesture studies.

Anyhow, overall I love your stuff. Keep updating!

This is a video game cover for Forgotten Worlds (Lost Worlds in Japan...fit my design better). Teacher thought it was a little too loose and the figures could have been posed better. I also got ripped on for the shitty helmet design on the left which would not be able to fit a human head and just looks bad. I like the simple blocky strokes but it probably would have looked a lot better if I thought out the designs a little more...they are pretty generic and lack any personality.

For my next assignment I'm going to be doing detailed character designs of these two, did the assignments kinda of backwards but w/e live and learn

First set i felt was a little too light and simple, so for the second set i tried more bulky designs similar to unreal tournament designs. Trying to work out some poses for my Lost World characters. I did a little experiment, the bottom one is done without reference and the top one is done with reference...the top came out better i think but i don't think the bottom one is too bad. I think for the unreferenced one i was thinking of too standard of a pose, the slight lean the top one has adds a lot of weight and believability to the character.

I'm starting my senior thesis and in a nutshell i'm doing four environment concepts for four different genres. So far I've decided to do post apocalyptic and western, i'm thinking about doing medieval and/or ancient Greece. If i have time i want to do a character for each of the genres too but we'll see how smoothly the environments go.

I decided to re due my concept for "A Good Man is Hard to Find" because my initial sketch wasn't really too accurate to the story. The setting was supposed to be in a more forested area and the car was supposed to be at the bottom of a 10 foot ditch. I also changed the scene depicted because after reading it over again this is what popped in my head and I thought it would make for a better image.

This is the scene at the end of the story where the grandmother gets shot by the misfit. !!spoilers!!

My teacher took us to another school where he teaches, and he let us sit in on an animal drawing class where they had a live horse. It was pretty cool, he didn't really move too much just his head to eat hey. They also had a giant hallway of casts which is what the first one is from. I wish I could have spent more time there. My teacher wasn't really digging the cartoony/wild e coyote look to my western environments and i agreed with him, i wanted to do something darker and more gritty. I guess something like Silent Hill or Gears of War meets old west. I just tried this style out on one building to see if i could get it to work and i think its a lot closer to what i envisioned.

I am always perturbed by the lack of comments here. Quality stuff, I especially like the drawings done at the Pennsylvania Fine Arts school.

One thing that I notice is that the perspective on wheels you do seems off. This is the case for both the latest steampunk and the enviro in post 157. Perhaps using a square in perspective to build it rather than eyeballing would work better.

So yea its finally done, not thrilled with it :( ... and I'm not quite sure why. I think I'm learning that my normal method of painting just doesn't work when i have a solid idea of what it is i want to paint. Normally i just start with randomness and take it where ever it looks like it should go, but i think for something like this i need to start with a fully refined line drawing before painting. With this one i sort of started with a line drawing but it wasn't very refined and i ended up having to draw pretty much all of it while i was laying down color.

Haven't stopped by in a little while. You are still doing awesome though.

I'm liking this latest western one and the astronaut sketches--any chance of painting them? Also the Sparth shapes are looking good, I have seen a number of people playing with this, and you kind of make me wanna try it.

One thing I feel can use some work though is your gesture/poses. All of your figures are basically the same--standing with fairly equal weight on both legs, shoulders parallel to waist, arms at side etc. Try out some more dynamic poses or different angles.

Are you referring to just the figures in my environments or all of them? When im just focusing on one character/figure i think I experiment with pose a little more but usually for the rough environments i don't think about them as much just because i only want them there to give it a sense of scale, when I'm bringing the environments up to more of a finish ill try and pay more attention to their poses

I feel like with a lot of my artwork i avoid doing actual drawing and instead just hint and things through texture and random strokes, so here i'm taking away all the color and value and leaving just the drawing. You can't paint well without drawing well so i'm definitely going to do more line drawings

For one of my classes we are giving ourselves our own assignments and for this one I decided to do an assignment after one of Feng Zhu's youtube videos. Basically what I'm trying to do is combine one animal and one vehicle and create a believable design. My idea, as the title says, is to combine a helicopter and a humming bird and I wanted to try and avoid anything military so i was thinking this could be used to fight forest fires.

not sure if I'm ready to call this done, id like to re do the rendering and i don't really like how its composed... feels empty in a bad way

Tombstone:
Once a prosperous silver mining town Tombstone, Arizona has been abandoned and forgotten. When the town was still thriving it was widely known for its’ frequent and often deadly gunfights. But when silver production slowed everything slowly deteriorated, investors lost interest, and people moved to neighboring towns. Now Tombstone’s only visitors are opportunists looking to scavenge whatever was left behind.

Hell City:
When humanity set out to colonize Mars, they had little choice on where to build their cities due to harsh weather conditions on the surface. Using Mars' crust to shield the city from the hostile environment, the settlement called Hell City, prospered and became the first successful human civilization on another planet. Due to the cold temperatures below the surface, giant column generators were erected to keep the city warm. It was these underground columns with their intense light that gave the city its' name.

Applewood:
In the aftermath of the global war, a few survivors found themselves in Applewood, Colorado; the last city in the United States to still have power. The landscape around them was bleak, and smoke and debris still filled the air. Among the ruins of a once great civilization the new residents built themselves shacks from the remains of the bombed out houses.

There is a sacred water that has the power to grant immortality to anyone who drinks it, to prevent the water from falling into the wrong hands the native people built a fortress to protect it. Hidden in the mountains, the massive stone walls protects the source of the sacred spring. For three hundred years the bastion has fended off seekers of the life-giving water. Over the years the place became known as Vodal Stronghold, from the Slavic word voda meaning water.
