Hi everyone.

I am currently doing a college course that will allow me to go to university.
I am hoping to eventually get into model and prop making for film and theatre or maquette and figure making. I have just chosen my specialist area on my course, I chose 3d design and model making. I am now starting to think about what sort of degree to choose and where to study Obviously it all depends on how well I do but I want to know what my options are.

I know a lot of you are post-graduates and have jobs in the industries I am hoping to enter and would really apprieciate a little advice from you all.

Basically I would like to know what subjects each of you studied, how it help you with finding work in your preffered areas and what considering my goals you think would be a helpful thing to study.

There is a 3d model-making course at my local art university (uca Rochester) but I'm not sure if that would give me enough experience in the sculpting process.

Also any advice on work experience and internships would be greatly appreiciated as I know it's not just gonna be a walk in the park of doing my degree then immediatley getting work.

Thanks in advance anything you can offer in the way of advice no matter how seemingly insignificant will be of more help to me that you can imagine.

I did the Hertfordshire modelmaking course and it's great fun and I came away with a lot - I'm sure the KIAD is the same. You get what you give, so if you spend 3 years working on your sculpting, between your tutors, your course-mates and CA you'll do something decent. If you don't.. less so.

Job prospects - slim-to-none, doodly-squat, bugger-all. But this is the creative industries, so you already knew that :P

Good luck whatever you decide. You could do a lot worse than spend 3 years of your life getting drunk and making models.

Hey DuneFishUK. Im in my first year at Hertfordshire, though i think i am going down the special effects side of the course.
I was just wondering what job opportunities you have had since you completed the course.

to the OP, i would recommend Herts. There are plenty of model making briefs. They also seem to have good connections with film studio and companies in the area.

I'll say what I always say - the thing you need to be is a generalist, so to me them streamlining the course into more and more specialised routes and cutting back on core making skills makes no sense.

More than ever it's now up to you to come out with something worthwhile.

Thanks very much guys. I'll definitley check out hertfordshire.

Dunefish; If you don't mind my asking what have you been doing since you left uni?
I agree about being a generalist, for a start I don't like the idea of geting so bogged down in one element of model making that I become a guru of it and then can't even fire some sculpey :) Besides the reason I want to go to uni besides helping towards my career is to learn as much as I possibly can about every kind of modelmaking as I can and hone some sort of skill level in the process.
By the way Loved the Max model you made,it's brilliant.

I say send it to me. I am going to two conventions in the next 4 weeks.

Honestly, just think hard about what you want most and focus on getting that with your cash or send it to me.
