Alien: The chestburster scene.

Aliens: "Get away from her you bitch!"

Alien 3 (SE): Junior (the guy who attacked Ripley) lures the alien into the holding tank and Ripley closes the doors behind it, you can hear him screaming through the metal.

Alien resurrection: The chestburster that was inside Purvis comes out through Wren's face.

The Matrix: "Please remove any metalic items, keys, loose change... Holy shit!"

The Matrix Reloaded: The fight at the Merovingian's Chateau.

The Matrix Revolutions: The final battle between Neo and Agent Smith. Plus any scene with the sentinals fighting the APUs. The sentinals looked absolutely incredable.

2001: A Space Odyssee: Dave is shutting down HAL while his sings "Daisy." You actually feel pitty for him.

O'Brother where art thou: The Bible salesman beats them up, steps on the frog and takes their money... "You don't have to read'em to sell'em"

Saving Private Ryan: The D-Day invasion. It's the most overwhelming thing in the entire movie.

Pitch Black: When the aliens first break out of the rock spires as the suns are blocked out.

Gladiator: The battle of Germania.

Braveheart: Robert the Bruce, helps William Wallace escape after betraying him.

Jurassic Park: The Raptors make their first appearance in the Kitchen.

Jurassic park III: The battle between the spinosaurus and the rex. The rest of the movie sucked.

FOTR: When the Balrog makes his first appearance.

Two Towers: The face off at helms deep with the Uruk'hai, before the battle begins.

ROTK: Sam fights Shelob

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Lee Mu Bai avenges his master at the end.

Signs: The kid backs up against the grate and the alien's hand grabs his face. And the brother watching the news in the closet while they're reporting on the alien caught on tape in mexico.

The Brotherhood of the Wolf: The part when the beast of Gevoudan is cornered in the pit and attacked.

Spinal tap: They preform their song Stonehenge.

First one that came to mind was from Miller's Crossing, but prolly cause I just saw it the other day:
Bernie: 'Look in your heart! Look in your heart!!'
Tom: 'What heart?' BANG!!

can't forget:

Hard-Boiled: tracking shot following CYF's dive on the docks, when the mailbox or whatever blows up. Beautiful

Usual Suspects: when the coffee mug falls and shatters

Fist of Legend: Jet Li making American-style Boxing look like the most incredibly lethal fighting art ever devised and sucker-punching his best friend in the back of the head

The Cell: "Where do you come from?!"

LOTR- RTOK: The scene where the Witch-king drops his war mace/flail

Snatch: basicly every scene

Heat: The 7.5 minute gunfight through the streets of LA

True Romance: Clarence (Christian Slater) visits Drexel (Gary Oldman) and when Vincent (Christopher Walken) visits Cliff (Dennis Hopper)

State of Grace: Final gunfight scene in bar The camera is great but the sound editing REALLY is the best.

Braveheart: The Battle of Sterling

Reservoir Dogs: Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) and Officer Marvin Nash ... "Hello, can you hear me?!"

There are MANY more but these are off the top of my head that stand out.

I love stuff like the scene in Fight Club when Eddy Norton talks about his apartment, and the way it blows up for the photography; the slow motion scenes in FLCL for their humour; and last but not least Ripley in Alien chasing a huge monster with a tiny taser for whatever.
I also love the simpsons drug trips (fav: peyote jalapeno peppers).

I really don't have a favorite scene. I have lots of favorite scenes though.

Here are a few:

In "Blue Velvet" when Dennis Hopper grabs the main character by the face and tells him "In dreams, you're mine."

Ghostbusters - Egon getting his pack switched on inside the elevator, and Ray/Peter fearfully backing away from the noise it emits. Also, every scene with Mr. Stay Puft and Slimer.

The methodical "cleanup" sequence following the shower scene in "Psycho." The aftermath is more exciting than the actual slaying to me, which is a continuity lover's wet dream. Why? Because it makes the actual slaying seem that much more a horrific "reality."

Night of the Living dead - "They're coming to get you, Barbara." and the lurching ghoul that actually *does* get Johnny.

Spartacus - "I'm Spartacus!" "I'm Spartacus!" "I'm Spartacus!" (etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.)

The "hospital trolly" sequence "Jacob's Ladder" where an abadoned hospital gradually turns into a hallucinatory living hell on earth with insane asylum patients, deformed human beings, bloodied strewn body parts, and finally, Jacob catching a glimpse of the disembodied trunk of a black man in an executioner's mask shaking his head in a barely visible blur.

Back to the Future, when Doc reacts to Marty's revelation that he's from the future.

Tron - Tron's introductory disc fight, and the lightcycle race.

Dr. Strangelove - "Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is a war room!"

In "Ran" when the delirious king searches for a knife to commit hari-kari on himself, but can't find one, instead stumbling out between two lines of soldiers who used to fight for him that are now invading his castle, and off into the fields.

Blade Runner - The replicant death scene. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe..." More proof that the most effective special effects are those in your head.

"All that Jazz" when they intercut scenes of men talking casually about a business deal regarding the main character with unflinching shots of an actual open-heart surgery being performed on the main character.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom's mine cart ride.

The Seven Samurai when Ichiro kills the bandit leader with the last of his strength. (I like the action in general in that movie; it's so brutal and unglamorous that it makes you hate war.)

And lastly...

Citizen Kane's famous "progression of time" sequence, ending with Kane's wife reading a competing newspaper.

Really, I could go on and on and on and on and on...

Billy Madison: I loved about every scene from that movie. "I wanted a snack pack, why can't you just give me a SNACK PACK?!" "Billy, did you fall asleep by the pool...or did you pass out?"

"Its one of those flaming bags again!"
"Don't forget your boots Fred!"
"Don't tell me my business devil-woman! Call the fire department, this ones out of control! ....sniff sniff... Its dat poop again!"
"He called the shit, 'poop'!"
"I'll get you damn kids! You all gonna DIE!"

The beginning of Waynes World. Two words. Bohemian Rhapsody :D

John
February 13th, 2004, 08:20 AM
Aven: Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the greatest moments in movie history :D
I used to be dj at a small pub here for some time with a friend of mine, and at ~3 am we'd always play that song and bang our heads like it was 1992 :D
I still got the video tape here, it's a terrible neon yellow. God, i was 11 when that came out... and i must have seen the movie at least 6 times in the last 12 years... along with Bill & Ted... i guess i'm conditioned to behave like an idiot. ROCK! VAN HALEN! AC/DC!

Edit: I just saw PhilHolland post about Road to Perdition and i had to add this, the scene when they arrive in chicago is brilliant; the shot in which the camera circles the car from front to back, showing first a bored tom hanks and kid, then the kid becomes aware of the city reflected in the windows, and finally the camera has turned around 180 degrees and reveals the skyline of the city... made me shiver.

PhilHolland

Too many to list. I'll post them as I think of them. Very good ones already mentioned too.

Tombstone - (2 scenes)
-After Wyatt does his walk on water thing - Doc Holiday, "Wyatt Earp's my friend", "Hell, I got lots of friends", Doc, "I don't".
-Doc Holiday's showdown with Ringo. Especially the shot before the face reveal, where his hat is just still hiding his face......

Desparado - Opening story scene & "Let's play".

Godfather I & II - Too many to list. Vito's first kill in II is really great. Oh, and don't forget horsehead from I.

The Abyss - Lot's in this one. Especially the ring in the doorway. The cinematics in this flick are insane. Watch the use of the color red.... Also, the first contact scene.

Lost in Translation - It's the little details and expressions that make this movie. I recently saw it and am impressed with shots that contain no dialogue.

Jurassic Park - This was the movie that made me want to work in visual effects. When the T-Rex roars at the end of the first movie I got chills. I couldn't believe that my childhood fascination with dinosaurs would ever be so "real".

Star Wars IV - Darth vs. Obi
Trench run. Just so many out of the IV,V, & VI. Darth's death scene. The emotion that motionless black plastic eyes displayed was brilliant. Another movie that really made me want to get into vfx.

Goonies - When they first see the ship in the cave.

Amadeus - Salieri as Mozart's "father" in the doorway/hallway. AMAZING.

Young Sherlock Holmes - Lot's of stuff. Stained glass knight, etc...

Indiana Jones - Adventure at it's best. Really the shots showing Indiana's decision making and some of the best action directing I've seen. Great pacing too.

The Mummy - Dear lord. My fescination with Egypt's gonna kill me one day. The movies are lame, but make up for it in the pacing. Similar style to Indiana Jones.

(NOT A MOVIE) Stargate SG1 - Probably the most underated show I've seen. It's pretty corny sometimes, but the damn stories, the plot, the fact that it's really original everytime through the gate, and the long term story lines. Gah! I love it.

Road to Perdition - Bullet through the rear window in car chase.

Saving Private Ryan - Death scene mentioned already, but the Omaha run. The audio/visual effect with the camera above and below water. Also, a lot of set driven scenes that were really, really amazing.

Alien - Tunnel.

Event Horizon - Corridor shots. Use of darker colors. Spooky atmosphere.

Matrix - Real worl/Matrix color schemes. Blue/Red, and Green/Yellow.

Titanic - When the ship is pointed up, the shear terror of people falling to their deaths.

Excalibur (1981) - A lot of it. I cannot hear "O' Fortuna" without thinking of this movie.

Batman - The first one. Bruce in the cave.... A couple of those shots. Jack made the movie as the Joker though. The tower sequence is good.

A.I. - The pan of the futuristic city where Jude has his animated monologue.

Lord of the Rings - Way too many to list. Most of the shots with the Ring Wraiths and the Witch King stand out. Also, the scale shots with characters entering locations were really well done.

Fight Club - Pretty much all of this movie. Possibly the best stylized flick I've seen. Great use of color. I want you to hit me as hard as you can.

Wow. I don't even think I've scratched the surface....

Jacobs Ladder...man what a disturbing movie!
I loved the scene in that where Jacob's lover Jezebel strokes his back with her foot while they're sitting on the bed...but in actual fact it's a midget's leg! The shot is fairly short so you don't realise what's wrong straight away...the film is full of stuff like that.

Braveheart- where his wife is killed...ooh you just wanna get that fat guy who kills her...

Saving Private Ryan- Omaha Beach (recently discovered the photography of Robert Capa, a war photographer who was amongst the first wave of troops to hit Omaha Beach...intense)

The Elephant Man- Where Anthony Hopkins walks through the streets of London at the beginning- the sound design is awesome

The Big Lebowski- where the Sherriff of Malibu suddenly throws his coffee mug right into the Dude's forehead.
In fact there are heaps of scenes in this film I love.

Apocalypse Now- opening titles, scenes with Kurtz, destruction of Kurtz's temple complex

Requiem for a Dream- I love this film because I can only bear watching it once.

Waking Ned Devine- Naked old man on a motorbike!

Star Wars Ep1- Darth Maul Sabre battles. Maul brought so much vitality to the concept of Jedi lightsabre battles. Too bad about the rest of the movie.

Tron- lightcycle scene.

LOTR ROTK- Mordor/ Mount Doom- The Witch King

Fight Club- the use of media references as narrative elements.

Seven- not any particular scene, just the mood of the shots used, cinematography and set design

there are so many more...oh well

Ep. 1-2: darth mauls fight, all of it...so cool. YODA!!! fuckin awsome...that little booger made the movie...

LOTR: umm...wow...the ones that stand out are in the first one, after gandalf falls, the emotion gets me everytime. and boramirs death scene is quite well done . and in ROTK, the cavalry charge and the charge of the olyphants....amazing stuff...

13th warrior, when Buliwyf whacks the chief off his horse...i love that shit...lol

indiana jones..
harrison fords expressions make these movies what they are... in last crusade, when he pegs 3 guys with one shot, priceless!

From Saving Private Ryan, I really like the beginning and ending battles.

In one of the ski films I have, one of the skiers has a part where he does a little bit of skiing to a cliff and then BASE jumps off them. I get goosebumps every time I see him jump of those huge cliffs; it must be such a rush.

Just about everyone in here has mentioned most of my favorite scenes. I'll add,

Terminator 1 - When we first see the Terminator for the first time without his flesh, right after he gets blown up in the truck.

Matrix Reloaded - Burly Brawl, Neo has to fight hundreds of Smiths, (MORE SPECIFICALLY, the part where Neo pulls the poll from the ground and gives the Smith's a hardcore beat down everytime the camera slows down for the big hits Neo gives, along with the chorus singing to add to the grandess of Neo's hardcore blows.)

Fist Of Legend - The Last battle with the General. Extremely well done fighting choreography, and realism.

Gorgeous - A Jacky Chan movie. It's not very good, but it has a mind boggling AMAZINGLY well done fight scene between Chan and a short Kick boxer. More specifically, when the Kick boxer easily and unexpectedly jumps in the air and does a 5 or 6 multi air kick combo as he floats through the air towards Jackie's head, (you can tell there were no ropes), and continued to fight easily right after he landed, and the fight just kept on going!

Close Encounters - When you first see the massive ship at the end.

Indiana Jones Raiders - The entire truck scene where Indy has to fight his way onto the truck, and beat all of the soldiers in it from the drivers seat. Nicely planned. Specifically when the 'last boss' music starts up as the last soldier makes his way to the front of the truck to fight Indy.

LOTR'S Return of the King (Cartoon) - When Frodo puts on the ring, goes completely mad, and destroys all of the Orcs, making you feel terrified and bad for the Orcs instead of him.

STARWARS (JEDI) - When Luke fights Darth Vader, the music brings the evil in that scene to reality.

Poltergist - When the parents and crew step into Carlolan's bedroom for the second time, and see the violent vortex and it's winds spinning wildly in the child's closet.

The Ring - The last scene when the evil girl Samara steps from the TV screen to kill Aidan.

AI - The scene towards the end were the boy was under water and couldn't-nor wanted to go anywhere as he kept asking for Blue Fairy.

Pulp Fiction - The cheese burger scene.

Scarface - "Say hello to my little friend" That enitre scene up to when he get shot.

Star Trek Motion Picture - The V-Ger fly over, when Kirk and crew first get through Vger's incredible cloud shield and fly's over the Vger star ship which is so big it makes the Enterpise look like a speck of dust.

EDIT - I forgot to mention....LOST HIGHWAY - The scene where Mr. Eddie goes berserk on that bad driver.

artisant -
Matrix Reloaded : Every scene with Monica Bellucci.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! She's incredible.

I'm way out of my league here. I still think The Lion in Winter (1968?) had some of the best dialogue of all time. Incredible film.

I like all kinds of film but really powerful drama and classic actors put certain types of film in a league all their own.
They're eternal.

I guess that's why Shakespeare is still alive and a challenge to stage and film.

I'd have to say almost any scene in the Blues Brothers but here are a few I really liked.

- When Jake and Elwood went to get Matt Guitar Murphy and John Lee Hooker was playing in the street. Loved that scene.

-The car chase

-When they drive through the mall and the cops are chasing them

-The scene where Ray Charles does Tailfeather and the entire block is out dancing

hmmm this could go on forever.

Also, Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Twist and shout scene on with the parade.

The Shining.. room 237 and those damn little girls freak me out to this day

Fight Club - when he beats his own ass to get the free paycheck

Galaxy Quest when Tech Sgnt Chen beams up the pig lizard and it is turned inside out, then explodes.

Matrix - lobby scene

Pretty much the entire thing of Ninja Scroll

Pulp Fiction when he has a bite of the Kahuna burger and also when uma od's and they put the needle thru her heart. Freaky. Too many other scenes to list in that flick.

Fun to read everyone's favs. Keep em coming

Aliens: When Bishop does his knife trick.

Hard-Boiled: Every gun fight. John Woo!!!

Matrix Reloaded: The sex orgy scene (just kidding :))

Schindler's List: I want to cry everytime I think about the scene when Schindler says he could have saved more.

"Schindler: This car. Goeth would've bought this car. Why did I keep the car? Ten people, right there. Ten people, ten more people...(He rips the swastika pin from his lapel) This pin, two people. This is gold. Two more people. He would've given me two for it. At least one. He would've given me one. One more. One more person. A person, Stern. For this. I could've gotten one more person and I didn't."

Unquestionably the finest piece of filmmaking ever -

the first 15 minutes of Once Upon a Time in the West.

Sergio Leone is my hero.

Other recent faves are the opening scenes from Wim Wender's Wings of Desire; also from that film the scene with the angel in the car, where the driver drives through modern day Berlin, but the angel sees WW2 Berlin out the windows.

And from Hellboy: 'It's for YOU!!' and 'You damned monster!!!' Instant classic one-liners.

Laurence of Arabia: The whole damn thing... Tyboogie knows what I'm talkin' 'bout...

BABE pig in the city: when Flealick, the little paralized terrier gets hit by the truck and dreams he's in doggie heaven chasing butterflies.... And when Theloneus the noble chimp insists on dressing up before escaping.

Triumph of the Will: The disturbingly cheery nazi training camp.

Stargate: The camera zooming up revealing Anubis's first victory pose

The way things go: how the whole artsy fartsy sciency 45 min long chain reaction ends...

Little Shop of Horrors: The first time Frank Oz' Twoie talks and the whole 'feed me' break into song.... and the huge puppet at the end manned by 33 people!

Howard the Duck: Phill Tippets creepy ass stop-motion monster at the end that scarred us all as children...

Starship Troopers: Sunny Clindathune battle scene, bugs.

Matrix Revolutions: The epic Zion battle!!! EAC owes me some new pants.

Episode II: Finally getting to see a fleet of Jedi whoop some ass.

... and lots more ... and just about what everyone in this thread has mentioned.

Any of the musical scenes in Nightmare Before Christmas. I adore that movie.
The Pei Mai flashbacks in Kill Bill volume II
When Rocky fights the Russian in Rocky IV
The bare knuckle boxing matches, and when the Pikeys get their revenge in Snatch
The "tip" arguement in Reservoir Dogs

[The Orcs form ranks.]
Eowyn: Merry, stay with me. I will look after you.
[Theoden rides down the spears.]
Theoden: Ride Now! Ride now! Ride! Ride to ruin and the world's ending! Death!
Rohirrim: Death!
[Eowyn gasps.]
Theoden: Death!
Rohirrim: Death!
Theoden: Death!
Rohirrim: Death!

After very uncareful calculations:

LOTR:TTT - When the Rohirrim ride in and mop up the Uruk-hai.

LOTR:ROTK - Charge of the Rohirrim

(what can I say, I'm a sucker for chargers :D )

Matrix - when Smith backs Neo into a wall and pummels him with blazing speed. What the final fight scene should have been, but wasn't.

Matrix:Reloaded - When Neo bursts out of the building so fast it explodes. Nothing special in theory, but I've never stopped and rewatched any other movie explosion. This one just really did it for me. As a lover of explosions, I was thrilled to see them get it right.

Snatch - Boris the blade, all scenes.

ROTK: when the camera pans across the assembled Rohirrim and you can finally see just *how many* there are. And then the actual charge where they just go flashing across the screen and the orcs go from looking haughty and superior to this sorta *oh shit* expression and then theyre just swept away by Rohan.

RoTJ: The final saber fight between Vader and Luke. Specifically the parts when Luke is up on the catwalk and he and vader are talking. And then the very final part after Luke screams 'never.' the music along with the lightsaber action is some of the best cinematography i can think of.

best line though goes to Vader (mainly due to James E-Jones awesome voice acting):

"Your thoughts betray you, father. I feel the good in you...the conflict."
"There is no conflict."

"Lock, stock and two smoking barrels"... i don't remember it frame by frame...but one woman gets knocked down by some bad guys , she gets up after a while, picks up one hell of a british machine gun and when she starts shooting, the camera goes into slo mo , and what a slo mo scene it was ! i have to say that not even the Matrix trilogy wasn't able to come with something better than that... i remember watching the movie several times over just for that scene.. awesome !

Top 5 would be

1. Millers Crossing... The scene/s between Johnny Caspar and Tom Regan where Casper is trying to find out where Casper is trying to find out where Regans loyalties lie and Casper's child enters the room "poppa Poppa," to be smacked by
Casper and the child starts crying,

brilliantly acted, great dialogue , your never quite sure who is in control in the scene tension and comic moments etc.

2. Brazil

Could pick 3/4 of the film, possibly The "Father Christmas" scene where Helpmann visits Sam after his booking, Helpmann is dressed as Santa Claus.

Its so surreal and dark

3. Pi

The sequence where Max Cohen is walking through the city and its just shots of the city, people in the park doing tai chi

4. Delicatessen

The montage scene with the bed springs etc

5. Old Boy

Dae-su is set free on the rooftop of a building from a suit case

Heat
When hell breaks loose after the police has spotted the crew leaving the back, Tom Sizemore picks up a little girl and takes her hostage. Pacino comes around the corner, unsighted and there's this slow-motion shot of him lifting his gun and turning his head to loosen up his neck, peeking through the ironsights. That always gives me the chills, as well as sizemore falling after he's been shot in the head.

Leon
Leon pushing Mathilda into the air vent and her trying to get out because she realizes that he can't come with him. Tears in my eyes, every single time.

Sunshine
When the ship encounters Mercury. Beautiful cinematography. Especially moving when you're in theaters and the whole room falls silent to sit and stare.

28 Weeks Later
The last motion-shaken scene of the infected running out of the underground towards the eiffel tower. The moment I saw it, I wanted to watch 28 Months Later.

Abyss
Everything.

High Fidelity
John Cusack screaming in front of Catherine Zeta-Jones' window.

The baptism/assassination intercut scene from the Godfather.

Quigley down under--the final death scene, "I never said I couldn't use a handgun. I said I didn't like them."

Final Destination--the teacher's death scene--a massacre staged by the Marx Brothers.

These are the first two that popped into my head:

1. The Bad Sleep Well (Kurosawa, 1960) - The Wedding Banquet

In my opinion, the best opening scene I've ever seen in a movie... It's rightly hailed as a tour-de-force of direction, editing, pacing, plot revelation, acting, intrigue, choreography, and whatnot as it's just awesome... I have seen and studied this scene more than twenty times for the past month... Too bad the rest of the movie kinda pales in comparison...

2. Rebecca (Hitchcock, 1940) - Mrs. DeWinter's long walk down the stairs

This is suspense at its most simplest and most brilliant form... And when I say simple, it's extremely simple... Yet Hitchcock managed to make the scene work--for the SECOND TIME in the same movie--and even BETTER!.... Okay, enough with the caps, but seriously, if you've been paying attention even the slightest to the story, it's hard to take your eyes off the this particular scene...

Blade - The scene where Whistler puts the gun to his head and says "Now walk away... you stupid son of a bitch. Walk the fuck away..." and Blade turns away with vengeance in his eyes. The entire movie is a masterpiece of action.

Powder - The scene at the end where Powder is roughly carried outside of the school, humiliated, stripped of his clothes, and thrown into a puddle of mud. The music, sense of power, and visuals are incredible.

Shawshank Redemption - Red's sleepless night before Andy escapes.

Coming to America - The barbershop scenes.

The Fifth Element - "Aziz... light!" and everything else, pretty much. The movie was a futuristic vision - silly heroic premise/action or not.

Platoon - When Barnes looks like a cyborg in the reddened glow of the explosion in the jungle, about to murder Taylor.

Predator - "You're one ugly motherfucker"

Billy Elliot - The scene where Billy's dad is hacking apart his mother's piano for firewood.

The Ninth Gate - Sex scene at the end.

All I can think of right now.

Panic Room: The camera flight through the whole house. I think I have to eloborate on this:

1. The narrative in this scene is mindblowing. You see the residents sleeping in their beds and next, you see all of the burglars roaming around the house, peeking through windows, breaking doors. All in one move.

2. The way the camera moves is just so much fun. The first time I saw it in cinema, I instantly wanted to push rewind and watch it again. The way the camera flies over the table, just an inch above the surface makes it look like a landscape instead of your ordinary living room.

3. Lighting. There's a lot of things I love about Fincher/Khondji, but their lighting is always so crystal clear and moody. These guys constantly amaze and Khondji is a big idol to me.

se7en: Intro and mood in the rainy scenes + library. Again, Fincher/Khondji.
