This was a collaborative project between me (Brett Wiseman (http://www.brettwiseman.com) ) and my associate (Stephan Sagmiller (http://www.stephansagmiller.com)). :chug:

We call it "Sleepless in Seattle."

My only problem is the placement of those fireballs. Are they fireballs shooting from that volcano or are those flames from the buildings burning? It's difficult to tell.

I keep thinking there should be a huge pileup of cars just before that lava pit....it just doesn't seem urgent enough.

I'd like to see one of those falling fireballs hitting the corner of a building and blowin out glass or something of that nature, but that's just me.

This is great, I would have put some glow to the lava flowing from the volcano, just for dramatics, also maybe some people hauling ass from the incoming death and destruction that has befallen them....maybe a few on fire..you know liven things up.

yeah i think something with the fireballs on the right corner maybe one distant, one semi near that illustrate what we see, when i first saw the two on the left i thought they were just badly drawn building fires..no offense. they're kind of conveniently placed on the edges of those two buildings too, they just all seem a little too un-chaotic

same with the scene, kind of like a day after everyone got home from work, the atmosphere is very casual, which works if that's what you're going for

So, Stephan, you really stumped me on this one, but I came up with a few changes after staring at this for awhile you might want to concider .

*Brighter cast light around the edge of the lava flow and firey bits to make it all look hotter. Some more light up the side of the building might be nice as well.

*Throw some bright rim lighting around the car nearest to the lava flow so it'll meld better with the scene.

*desaturate the lava flow nearer the horizon

*Add bright white hot spots at the front of the fireballs to make them look more like they're speeding through the air and less like the buildings on fire. Maybe a little motion blur, too.

*A bit of lava flow reflected in the car windshields to again bring the scene together more.

*Either use a photo or do a little more work on the volcano cloud to make it look less painterly. Everything else is fairly realistic looking except for that one little part.

*Add in some brighter sparks or lava burst from the top of the volcano so they eye is more drawn to it, I kept passing it over when I was first looking at this. Or maybe just brighten up the red dripping down the sides.

I think that was everything....

That out of the way, let me also say I loves this. The colors are beautiful, all the tiny variations are just tasty. I wish Seattle was that pretty on a dank day. You did a really nice job with the compositing as well, perspective-wise it looks spot on to me. The composition is also quite lovely. In whole, it reminds me of promo art of any of the recent disaster films, Armageddon and Volcano in particular.

Anyways, if you want reasoning/clarification for any of this feel free to ICQ me. I also threw together a quick paintover that you're free to see if you'd like. As usual, take anything I've said with a grain of salt, cause I'm prone to be wrong ;)

As a fellow Washintonian, I think you should have included some land marks like the Space Needle, EMP or Science Center arches. But good job, it really does look like Seattle. Except for the lava...

Hmm, well I recognize a few of those buildings, though they aren't really land marks. I'm pretty sure they want this to be appealing to look at, so that kind of rules out adding the EMP ;)

I have to agree with the remark about the volcanic clouds. The detail should be pretty sharp. I was living in Port Orchard when Mt.St.Helens blew in 1980. You could see--in great detail--every billow in the cloud of ash.

Beautiful painting,
but where is the sence of PANIC ?
The cars looks "buisnes as usual" to me.

...but still, beautiful painting.

awesome :) i love the fine detail! i agree with darkcult, a little bit of running people's silhouettes would add an instant ingredient of chaos..

Agreed. The positions of the cars especially detract from any urgency there ought to be.
