Wow these are really nice! Lots of cool detail.

Only crit would be to add some line weight to the tribal beast.

What is this? man these are terrible! Lol just kidding you know your my boy. I said it once, Ill say it again that monster is sweeeet! Clepto has a point with the lineweight. But might want to fix that arm before you do. Looks like you have 2 choices to correct it, 1 move the deltoid down and toward the side of the arm, or 2 add in the tricep and move the brachioradialis up. It depends on which way you want the arm to be turned. (look in the anatomy for the artist book for reference.) Other than that and I guess some people are looking for more clarity on the head area, though I think if you added some lineweight it would clear up. Nice to see you posting up here. Every body crit this thread!!

Man that deskroom is real cool, looks like conceptart for a sweet adventure game of some sort.

The others are cool too, the new lineweights are an improvement! And wtf is that last thing? I like it either way.

color away man!

Man those are pretty awsome, tight stuff. My only critique would be to put in a little line variation here and there to give them some weight. Nice stuff though!

fantastic work and great detail. I do agree withj the others line weight is good for non mechanical things. (sorry to be repetitive... but repetition is key!)

Thanks everyone! Yeah I'll work on those lineweights.

Did anyone mention anything about line weights? Just kidding. These are beautiful pieces. They're very original and compelling. I would like to know where they're going, that is, what their purpose is, before commenting further. Are they purely concept drawings, that would normally be used as the basis for modelling or creating movie sets for example? Are they finished pictures in their own right? Don't take that question the wrong way - these are certainly worthy of being pictures in their own right - I would just make different comments depending on what your goals are with these. Great stuff, keep it up.

Im really taken back by the Windy Vale piece. Your attention to detail on the wooden plank walkway and the cobblestone street is badass.

The inventors workshop and the other environment piece give me a feeling of actually looking at it myself. Such excellent perspective and composition.
I think I`ll set that one as a background for a while, just to see the awesome detail everytime i set my ass behind this machine, and work to someday aspire to thesame level.

Thanks a bunch everyone! I really appreciate all the feedback.
Chris: I'm a student enrolled at the Art Institute here in Dallas in hopes of becoming a concept artist and these are just pieces that will hopefully make it into my portfolio.

Hey you.:) . I like that monchromatic look you have going there. You saw me wearing my mechanical hat and you had to draw it . J/K. I think it needs a little bit of light comming from behind to make it look a little more solid. Can't wait to see more. Oh and :happybirt

all your stuff is great, awesome style.
but that cave especially drew my attention.. it's fantastic..
no crits at all, I saved it straight to my hard disc, would be cool if you would color it in some time.

I'm loving the work man! You do really REALLY well with the line work, I usually NEVER spend that much attention on lines, it would get me bored and I'd move on, (which is why much of my work has focused on vivid color contrasts and awesome creativity more than detail, but winds up being flat shaded because I'm a busy man and art is only a hobby for me).

Keep it up, you're good at the creativity and the eye for details, and you possess the patience needed for great work.

dem0n: Thanks...I'm honored...I'm actually working up some color stuff and I'll put it up as soon as I get something decent.

CCCP-DeLux: Thank you sir!

Here's something that I was working up for the machineflesh challenge on CGTalk but I don't think I'm gonna make it lol...still gotta work out some lineweight issues and paint it but maybe I can pull it off. :coffee:

EDIT: Okay the site I use to host my images has been having a lot of problems lately so somtimes my images may not appear....I apologize...<sigh>.

i really like this latest piece, and i know it's not colored but i'm losing the silhouette due to the complexity. perhaps place him on a darker/lighter background so we can see the form? i would echo comments about giving slightly heavier lineweight to highlight and/or distinguish forms, but other than that these are excellent pieces.

wow. some incredibly detailed concepts! its cool to see another art institute student! i go to the one in portland oregon...and the talent there is very few. seems like you got some really good artists in dallas.

the line weight issue is a key crit! you can easily get lost in your details and not distinguish certain areas of the object. or character. which can be easily fixed. the closer an object is to the foreground you could add either thicker lines and stuff that is more in the background you really dont need all the detail so itll show some depth.

your ideas are really creative with all the gears and mechanics n such! seems like you like huge robotic like characters with gigantic arms and small bodies with a lot of stuff attatched to the body or armour.

i envy your environments you have a good understand of perspective especially when it comes to environments!!!:D

now i wanna see colored works! these are all portfolio worthy! how old are you? how long do these concepts take to draw? do you have any other concepts that arent in the genre of mechanical characters...o and whats your thought process when you attempt these concepts?

thanks for sharing!

seems like you got some really good artists in dallas.

It is no fault of the instruction by the school I assure you. Any one who manages to get talented at the art institute of Dallas does so almost exclusively on his or her own. Though most schools depend alot on indipendant study AID is almost excessively so.

Every where you post they say lineweight, one of these days it'll sink in haha. Keep em comin!

This stuff is sick man, insane detail. I agree about the value stuff, but it's hard to complain about anything when i'm looking at such great stuff.

Color would be awesome, but i can just feel my hand start hurting when i thinkof doing that.

The detail is astounding. How do you come up with it? Do you actually imagine all those little details in your head, or do you try to get ideas from things around you?

Ulysses
July 17th, 2004, 12:50 AM
brkfdon: Thanks man...I'm actually trying to vary my stuff a little more...trying to get into some more organic-looking stuff. I'm 20...still a student here at AID for a little while longer...it usually takes me a an hour or so to do thumbnails and get some ideas going and maybe a day or two to finish a drawing which is probably too long lol...I usually have a couple of drawings going at one time though.

chozometroid: It's pretty much all from my head but I use reference photos if I need 'em. I do get ideas from things around me sometimes too.

On your machine drawings, when you are drawing all those little screws, dials, levers, and what-not's, are you thinking about their functionality or just placing them for design purposes?
I've always been curious about this question when looking at some of these super-complex machine details(regardless of the artist).

Thanks for any insight on this.
