Tip - try reading up on some head/body construction (Loomis and Bridgman books are good places to start). It'll make your posemaniacs and other drawings look better.

New semester and finals are over, so I'll be uploading some of the stuff I did in art this semester sometime later...
I switched to Commercial Art this semester, which is seeming pretty fun so far.
Self Portrait (About 2 hours), we've got a 4 day weekend so hopefully I'll draw up some good stuff.

Is it bad to be painting in grayscale and then to get the colors through overlay?
I just saw the technique somewhere and wanted to try it..(below)
It seems easier, but I don't want to do it if it'll hinder me somehow later. I also really want to start doing environments, because I feel like I've only learned about anatomy. I've no idea how to start on them though.
Yeah just doodles for today, 20min each - no reference for either
Elz
February 20th, 2010, 05:54 AM
Hey! You're going off to a nice start, but I personally don't suggest using overlay. It'd be much better to learn colours, doing life studies are a great way to pick out the colours. Try painting an apple from life and really look at the colours. You'll be suprised. :)
Same for metal. And there's nothing wrong with working from a photo reference (or better get, yourself in a mirror) to get to grips with how skin is painted.
I've just started doing some environents, I've been using this site: http://freetextures.3dtotal.com/
And trying to just roughly get the colours down before i refine it. Hope it helps! :)
skMOP
February 21st, 2010, 02:27 AM
Elz: Thanks for the input. I took your advice and painted an apple, hopefully I'll get the time to do more foods haha. It turned out good in my opinion except for the shadow maybe. I like the reflecting light on the left especially :P
So yeah, an apple:
...and a question: Is it bad to use a spackle brush to blend? Someone told me I should be blending with just hard-edged brushes at 100% opacity and to vary opacity via pressure. So tell me, what's your method of blending?
(From life + an hour or two)

using greyscale is not bad. Do what you feel is right, greyscale has benefits, youll learn how to control contrast better, and for where youre at learning how values work is gonna help out a lot, learning/observing how color works can always be done as well, or later. Using greyscale and then overlay is just one technique, so dont rely on it, just look at it as another tool.
I have a video posted of me using overlay but its not something I do regularly:

That apple looks great! :D Very nice. The shadow could be worked on, but it's nothing major. Try painting a spoon or something metal next, maybe? :D
I'd say use whatever brushes you find comfortable, what works better for you? I usually use a kinda hard brush, but easy to blend with, on my Adobe it's gotten used to the name "the second 19 brush". Really should find the name for it XD
However, I downloaded a brush set a while ago from someone on deviantART, and there's a brush that's like a paintbrush, a bit harder to blend with than my usual, but it makes me focus on getting the colours right.
So; have a play around. See what works for you. One thing though, I'd say stay away from the Airbrush, it can be useful but generally gives off a too smooth effect for my liking. Might just be personal preference :)
skMOP
February 21st, 2010, 06:08 PM
Elz: Thanks, I'll do what you suggested and try metal later. Yeah I don't use airbrush either, and I know which one you're talking about haha. My main brushes are that one, a hard 19, a spackled brush, and a custom sketching one.
Andrew Jen: Oh I do paint in grayscale but I wasn't sure if using overlay was a good method. Thanks for showing me the video, and the end result was great too!
Two quick environments, 1.5 hours, 40 min for first and second one, respectively. I just put colors into it without painting grayscale first, so I think I'm getting better at picking colors out. I kind of spammed some of Photoshop's brushes for texture ^^;
The rest are random sketchbook pages.

Haha so school kind of took over for a bit as I kept forgetting to do homework/doing it bad. But no worries its back on track for a couple of weeks hopefully.
I'm really getting frustrated with digital painting, my colors seem too desaturated (I think that's the correct term) and they look "unfinished". Maybe it's just a matter of working on them longer.
I did a Heath Ledger portrait but I haven't gotten it back yet - some anatomy studies will be posted later.
So here's a jellyfish type thing, references were only used to get a better image on what they look like. This is a WIP - so any critiques on comments on where I should go with this is VERY welcome.

It's great to see that you're doing a lot of studies, that's definitely what it takes. You'll see a lot of improvement if you keep it up daily; only advice is: try to focus more on basic shapes of things right now (for the body construction) and do a lot of studies of each facial feature and then slowly put the features together to make an entire head.
And just keep drawing from Bridgman/Loomis/Hogarth books and from life / photo refs / imagination daily. Keep it up! I think you have good potential

Crappy and small update. Bad character so I didn't really go into rendering or too much detailing. I think my flow was better though? Maybe you can't tell from the sketch but the lines were pretty solid before I started erasing and putting in details.

Hey skMOP thats a nice workload you got there. Keep that up and don't falter and you'll level up like crazy! Keep going and never stop. If I were you I might not worry too much about lines and maybe just sketch like crazy in the few couple of drawings you are doing to loosen yourself up. In fact you should start all your drawings with a light sketch thats not really focused on lines but getting a solid foundation down. After you got your light sketch foundation you can go over it with a darker and more focused line.
Also perhaps a few gesture drawings might do you some good. Just find a video on youtube that have figures in motion like basketball, boxing or gymnastics, etc... Stop the video at a frame where you can see the whole figure and sketch that out really quick, not really focusing on lines, but, hell, do it scribbles if thats what it takes to get it down, but try to get the whole figure down in 30 seconds to a minute, then unpause the video and pause it again when it falls to the next frame of movement and sketch it out again and so on. Hopefully this exercise will help loosen you up when you go to do more precise concentrated studies.
Anyways keep it up man!

one ting from me as i can see your improvement is going in the right direction. Take more time to look at what your drawing, also get more technique by practicing many different pencil strokes that put out different textures i.e. crosshatch shading and biro is a good way to get your lines more accurate also with biro you cannot make mistakes its a good way to learn to carry on with a mistake and turn it into a positive placement in your sketch. so yeah try some pencil techniques im sure u can find these in books and e-books. good painting skills btw :)

Tom Fenton Thanks for the tip! I've started to pay more attention to my hatching now and started to shade by following the form. By biro did you mean the pen? I'll try to get my hands on one, I've also been trying to get a brushpen to work with because I tried it and it's amazing :D.

Lots of great studies here. Your anatomy studies look good, just remember to use it for some of the pose studies, they look at bit stiff at the moment. Also when you do still life studies, paint a background as well, since the colors of the background affects the object you are painting and the white page also affects how you see colors.

Wow, your painting development in digitals is improving at a good rate- im still liking that Master study you did earlier on, the tones are well-developed, and the proportions are solid
Your pencils are getting better, but I'd take Pixie's advice- it seems that you need to pay more attention to the general proportions and shapes (esp facial proportions- the big one) so they read more accurately. But the direction you're in is correct, it just takes time and practice for the drawing, but you'll get the hang of it sooner than you think ;)

hard, hard edges everywhere. try to build an arm that looks like its well.. one complete arm, his left arm is really wonky, the lighting and values are all of everywhere their is a muscle.. word of advice, dont mess with colors for a good while instead work with your values in black and white and just try to show one continuous mass in your characters.. not a jagged sharp edged arm :P

Hands are indeed difficult things to draw! I recommend study it from Loomis' Drawing The Heads and Hands (you have it, don't you :P). Just study and draw two or three hands from it everyday, and you'll see the improvement in your structure and mass (just like Krato say)!!
And indeed, your value is still need much works. Just mix some simple still-life on your study. It will help you with form and value :)

Watercolour paper under 300lb weight needs to be stretched in order to avoid rippling and warping. I types out an overview on watercolour painting for someone else which I think you might find vaguely usefull.
First is the paper- You will need to get some watercolor paper. This paper is specifically made for watercolor and is thicker than your average paper. It is labeled in pounds (paper is made in rolls and cut into sheets, so if it says 180lb, it was 180lbs when in a roll) and the heavier the number, the thicker the paper. You will also see the labels hot/cold press. Cold press has much more texture to the paper and soaks up water faster while hot press is smoother.
Next is stretching your paper- You will have noticed by now that paper get crinkly when wet. In order to avoid this you can do two things. A- use a very, very heavy paper. or B- stretch your paper. Stretching basically pre-wets your paper and keeps it flat, so when you go to paint on it, it has already moved to where it will be. You will soak the paper until it is saturated, place it on a board, gently get rid of a wrinkles or air pockets and then tape it down. You can use butcher's tape (looks like butcher's paper but has stamp glue on the back. When you get it wet it gets sticky) or masking tape. Masking tape it iffy sometimes because it doesn't stick to wet paper. It does come off the paper unlike butcher's tape however. If you use butcher's take you have to cut if off the board.
On a side note, I have a watercolor paper pad which I love- No stretching! It's a bunch of watercolor paper that has been pre-stretched and glued into a big block. When you're done with a page, you cut it off and voila- a new page pre-stretched.
The Paints- You can get watercolors in tubes (wet) or in pans (dry). I know lots of people prefer the tubes because of more vibrant color, but I personally don't mind either. When the paint dries from the tube you can just add some water to it and it's good again. I wouldn't suggest getting the best quality (and most expensive!!!!!) paints until you know what you're doing a bit more.
Last is the fun part: Painting- I would suggest getting a good watercolor book out from the library or buy one. A lot of watercolor painting books lean towards the "How To" angle. Eg- this is the way to paint a rock/tree/water/cloud. As long as you don't take those as rules you can learn some pretty interesting techniques. I'm attaching some basic links on techniques- eg wet in wet (as Icecold mentioned), wet on dry, dry brushing, etc. I've been taught to start with the darkest areas and build them up using layers. The lightest areas will have the least number of layers.
Links:
Watercolor Techniques (http://www.watercolorpainting.com/watercolor-tutorials.htm)
How the techniques are used (http://www.johnlovett.com/techniq.htm)
So, there's a short overview. Hope it helps.

Keep practising those pencils. Lines are important, drawing is important. With drawing, painting will come. Also, as you put each line, each stroke of the brush - think. It is very important that you not only use your physical faculties, but your mental as well. When you're only drawing using your hand, you're restricting your own abilities. It should be very clear to you the purpose with which you put down each mark.
Now I've gone and said unnecessary things. Best of luck with your art!

The portraits are looking okay. You may want to consider doing studies of your face features separately. Also notice sometimes that your lips drift downward, watch that kind of thing, remember the rule of thirds. I think that's all for now, you are doing well. =)

Hey skMOP :D
Somehow I feel a hunch that you like painting approach better than using line (well, maybe it's just me :P), but I agree with Vritra as I still see some basic flaws in your works.
Oh, the hands are looking better now. It seems you're able to spend more time on them than before. The other studies are good too, although you still have to work on line quality to avoid those "petting" lines. Read this thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=116199&highlight=assignment+1+%26amp%3B+2) as I see there's some things about line accuracy and confidence, hope it help you to improve :)

You're doing a good job with the studies and paintings. I think that your figures are still missing a sense of weight and balance. In fact, they look like they're floating in some of the images. When you go to draw a pose, try to quickly strike it yourself so you can see where the weight is resting. Some of your gesture drawings are getting there.
That last post is looking great. Nice colors and lots of mass. Keep it up!

hey thanks for droppin by my sketchbook! looks like youve improved quite a bit since LTS as well :) youre still pretty young too so youve got some time. dont let that get to your head though! best thing i can tell you is to keep workin hard and youll keep improving. heres some stuff you could work on a bit too:
- your values have improved a lot since LTS but youre still not getting a full range in your imaginative stuff. photo studies!
-for your sketches, your lines are really good but they lack structure. i would stop worrying about the quality of your lines for a while and just concentrate on their accuracy. really make sure you put them in the right place, even if it takes a few tries. that will help you understand the shape of things better and make sure you are drawng those shapes correctly. your line quality will improve the more you draw.
-your colors are looking a little washed out. again, photo studies work wonders!
other than that, just try to do as much art as you can. i know how much high school can suck (haha), but just try to do some art every day, no matter how little. every bit helps. if you stay motivated and keep workin youll get where you want to be. how fast you get there is just up to you. cheers man, and good luck! ill be droppin by every once in a while :)

you've got a great amount of studies, that's very good!
I think you're focusing too much on outlines tho, it's like you're trying to copy what you see to paper by just putting an outline around it. that makes your drawings very flat, and mistakes show up easily because you're not sure which lines are important and which aren't.
it's a lot more important to understand what you're drawing, in terms of 3d shapes and weight, force, etc. those are the things you should be trying to describe with lines. have a look at other people's drawings and see how they seem to wrap their lines around 3d shapes, and how they vary line weight and strength to add a little bit of extra zing

From life, and then a fail attempt to re-imagine in a different angle.
kind of working on perspective with it too.

love that face in your thread attachment, keep up all the studies! Cheers. On the perspective studies, are you using a ruler? letting some of the lines diverge away from the vantage point will keep things very wonky, if you don't have access to a ruler, try ghosting the line on top of the page a few times before actually drawing it in to build a bit of muscle memory.

Sidharth Chaturvedi
February 9th, 2011, 02:56 AM
Good studies, man! Seems like you're really trying to get structure down, with all the perspective stuff and trying to nail multiple angles. Those head studies in particular are showing some planar understanding, which is great. Dunno if you've already done work from his books or not, but if not, start copying Bridgeman, you're really going to pick up a lot from it. (Although, for your own sanity, keep an anatomy book open beside it).
Cheers,
Sid

That last self portrait is looking better. The lips look a little small on average the self portraits though. Also on that last one you could use some gray to cool down the jaw line a bit,if you want it cool.
Also beside muscle memory the Id exercises are also a good opportunity to practice visualizing, trying to see things on the paper before you draw it, bobby chui has talked about it a few times and the ten minute drawing guy in my sig has talked about it a few times.
The studies are looking good too keep going.

The design of the mechs kind of fell apart when making this picture. I originally had an entirely different purpose for these, but one thing led to another and I ended up adding/deleting a bunch of parts of the robots. Yeah not happy with the design.
I need to learn how to render matte surfaces.
and also learn composition.

You studies are looking good mate! You really seem to get the idea of edges which is a tricky thing to do a lot of the time. :)
Take a second and do a bit of thinking before you get too much further into that cow piece. #1- where is the light coming from. #2 How is the light hitting everything. Right now you have pretty much a flat value and colour on everything and that's getting you nowhere. I'd suggest doing a black and white sketch piece to get it all sorted.

Hi, you're doing great. I can see you study well.
A few posts up you painted some armors from photos. You then painted the girl in armor, but it seems to me you didn't capture the feel of the armor. The shapes and funtionality is correct and well done, but it doesn't appear reflective and the overrall image lacks contrast. Also, don't forget to pay attention to the perspective. It applies to characters as well as everything else. For example her belt is curving the wrong way. I hope I'm not too harsh on you here, because you have improved and the redering is solid. Oh, and by the way I love the car in post #226.

Girl in stiff armour? =) Maybe start with a quick gesture in paint, just a simple idea with paint, and then try to strengthen that with darker values. Okay.. meant to help, hope it does =) Good luck with your nexts =)

kungfoowiz: I think that a lot of the stiffness can be attributed to the lack of flexibility in that armor. thanks
zelda_geek: Naa never too harsh, I wish there were more comments like this :) I think if there's any reasoning for the lack of contrast, it's because I painted it very overcast so I didn't think there was much to reflect. Definitely get what you mean though, I was struggling with the light source in the picture to start with too. Thanks for the comments!
