i've got a bunch of work to do, but maybe...just maybe... i'll get something in this time. i'm going for the desaturated wwii uboat vibe. maybe a secret uboat harbour, maybe a uboat sneaking down the thames in london... who knows?

ccsears, I love subs as well, this is looking great!
Josh D, good start and I like the way the ship is one with the clouds.
Matt, great perspective so far.
Here's my back ground start, I want to make junker gypsy flying ships that land on the floating port, just a rough of what the future crowded city may look like... I thought of Hong Kong in the future. the crafts will be next.

one question- wouldn't a sailing vessel need sails?, not to criticise ccsears image, because so far its looking pretty good, i just wondered would a submarine or even any other similer motor driven vehicle be classed as a sailing vessel. I an oil tanker would be concidered a ship that sails on the sea, but yet i would never concider it as a sailing ship.

tron inspiration...
http://ftp.sunet.se/pub/pictures/tv.film/Tron/crrrslrs.gif

and then there's always john berkey...
http://johneaves.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/john-berkey-large02.jpg

i would've picked an information packet sailing into a data port, but i'm not that ambitious this week.

sailing vessels need sails. but in american english, the vertical "fin" of a submarine is referred to as its "sail." it's also a verb that's used for any boat--you can google "submarine sets sail" and it comes up with a ton of hits. besides, pretty much everyone in the navy can be referred to as a sailor.

i think the important thing for this theme is that the (blank) feels more like a boat than a plane. and that the (something) feels more like a harbor than an airport or train station. but that's just my take on it.

Sweet subject!

Some crits and what not:

MattB - I like the space harbor concept and the ship designs. I'd focus on the foreground/background separation try and create some distance between the two ships with your values.

Kellyx - OoOh! Futuristic Tokyo sweet! Images of Bladerunner spring to mind. Look forward to seeing where this goes.

ccsears - Yea my socks are officially rocked. Fucking sweet, hope ya finish.

PsychDragon - Not alot to crit, Keep going!

Goddard - Love the idea, great colors too! I'd try and clean it up a bit if you can. Oh and don't forgot the icon!!!

JoshDArtist - I really like the start, a suggestion? Right now my eye is being led towards the bottom right quadrant, I'd add a point of interest down there.

Well I really screwed the pooch last round, forgot the icon. Won't do that again. This time I'm gonna go with the hidden pirate cave, maybe an old abandoned shack, row boat, skeletons, not quite sure where this one will take me...

well, it looks like i'm getting attacked by a bunch of deadlines right now, so i've had to take a few shortcuts to "finish" this. i hosted these images on my flickr account, so i hope that works for you Ms. Chaos.

anyway, probably my last chance to offer feedback on this stuff this week so...

MattB I'd rotate the image a little bit. right now the whole thing is too 45 degrees, which tends to flatten out the image. if your stuff is on layers, i'd also consider making the harbor bigger--to the point where it maybe gets cropped by an edge of the picture. just to push the composition one way or another. all depends on what you want, but i think a gentler angle feels more like "sailing" (to me at least)

Josh Davis Thanks man. i'd do some combination of these things...
1) make the ship much bigger in comparison to the canyon.
2) make the canyon much bigger than the ship
3) add some perspective by breaking up the cloud shapes in the distance so that there are some smaller ones in the background and larger ones in the foreground. right now they are all massed together into a shape that's kind of flattening out a little too much. just break them up and create some scale-perspective and overlaps and it will help a lot.

kellyx i like the colors in the rough because it looks either "Tron" or like a thermal image. i thought about this POV for a while too. i think it can work, but it will be a little tricky. just remember to do a kind of contrast in sizes--like a large ship in a narrow channel. chinese style boats do look cool so i'm looking forward to yours.

goddard11 Aivazovsky... look him up. here's a link to the google image search
aivazovsky on google (http://images.google.com/images?client=safari&rls=en&q=aivazovsky&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=pb_7SqyzLo-6swOMnI2BAQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBQQsAQwAA)
he's one of my favorite painters. does some awesome seascapes and beautiful nocturnal scenes. stunning work. i like yours because it reminds me of his work. you should get bonus points for the nocturne.

psychedragon are these old school traditional paints! go for broke man! right now, i'd just suggest planning your values carefully so it reads well. right now the sail of your boat is about the same value as the background. planning where your lightest lights and darkest darks will go is the key to pulling off a scene like this.

t i m pirate cave sounds kind of cool to me. could be some interesting lighting to play with on that one. will have to wait and see where you take it before i can offer any feedback though.

alright, back to the deadlines for me. good luck everyone.

zimfin: great idea!... we aren't seeing much of the environment though, and (in my opinion) it may be due to the fact that the cockpit view takes up exactly half of your composition...
what if you lowered the view, and we saw more through the windshield?? like... does the windshield glass wrap up onto the roof (i.e. Scion tC) thus producing an uninterrupted veritcal composition???
just a suggestion... :)

Hello,

For those who are interested in how I work I am going to try and explain a little about my process work. I have no idea how to write inbatween or below these pictures, I am hoping some one can explain this to me:yayca:
828190
I usally start out with an idea or image allready visible in my head and I sketch thumbnails untill I get closer to what I think looks "right"
(More and more I sketch in perspective, its uber important) The way I go about creating these thumbnails depends on how commited I am to a particular idea.
828192

I usally use a pressure sensative chisel brush to create some hard edges for a nice looking silhouette. I try not to think about detail and just focus on what is the best composition to best describe my subject matter. Sometimes I'll sketch in color but most of the time I don't.

828194
Okay, when I actually start making something I usually use one tone, keeping it very simple, to create an interesting shape. Then I use a smaller brush with a darker or lighter tone to add detail to the bigger shapes I just created, or I use the pressure sensitvity to "paint" smaller shapes. Bellow are examples of this, they're not that great but I hope it gets the point accross.
828196
Then, I merge overlay or other layer types down ontop of my original. These layers are photos that give me some color and texture to work with. I keep adding detail with tons of differnt brushes, I try not to stay on the same brush for the whole picture. I keep adding photographic textures but I make sure they don't affect my originall color choices. I use the selection tools alot and the gradient tool alot. The power these tools have alone is pretty amazing. You can create some pretty slick shit, could even pass it off as 3d.
828232
After that its just a matter of polishing it. This can get really "auto pilot" sometimes and you forget what you are doing and you can really screw things up.
828234
I hope this helps and makes sense.
thanks for looking, Some awsome work in here as always :)

JoshDArtist: Thanks man. Good advice. I think I showed so much of the ship because I wanted it to be clear what it was but I could lower or widen it or something.

Guilefine: Looks great! I like the 2nd last one more than the last and I think it is because of that big Green field area. The dark trees are killing that part in the last one for me but that is just my personal taste. Still awesome work.

put your curser where you want the image to be then go to the paperclip there should be a drop down box with all yourimages, scroll down to select the one you want .andit willplace in the text where you want it

I'm having a bit of a crisis of confidence with my environments at the moment, I'm on the brink of a breakthrough, of something sinking in, but Im still approaching projects through 'I JUST DONT GET IT.' eyes. I just lost out on a potential job, and my environments were a big part of that, so its got an extra layer of pressure on top there.

Ideas from top to bottom-

#1- Actually did this one last, thats why its a bit neater.

I've been in a lot of train stations lately and this 'port' is basically that, except the train is a floaty airship. Theres space for a lot of people and viewing platforms, as I reckon even in this little station, theres a lot of people who see these machines as a spectacle, going on one is an event worth being 'seen off' by your loved ones.

#2- This was my first sketch, if anything its included to show how bloody shaky I was coming into this. 'Port' is actually the name of the building, which is a night club or pub or something. The boats which go in are more likely to be smugglers. Its an idea which could have some legs if I let it grow methinks, but I prefer the grandeur of the others.

#3- Here 'Port' is a bit of an upmarket hotel/casino of sorts, complete with cheeky neon signs. A bit of outdoor shade going on at the sides, tables with parasols and some trees. Bloody classy.

#4- Pushing the urban-ness of 'port'. Its more of a temple now, and is very grand indeed. The sailor is on one of those skateboards with a sail, because i'm cool like that. Lots of market action going on around him, area is a bit poorer. Kinda drifting too far from the brief, even if it has a lot of spectacle.

#5- Bit of figuring out what the inside of the 'port' would look like, this was the precursor to #1. Its kinda churchy, like these vessels are something to be worshipped, bringing tourists or supplies or something. Kinda like the cargo cults.

#6- Taking one of the others and pushing the temple idea ridiculously further. Would really have to show some porty stuff behind the arch to justify calling this one a port :p.

I guess next I'll smash these together into another round of thumbs/speedpaints and see what comes out the other side.

Tim - beautiful improvements.

I've been putting a few hours into this painting. Still have a quite a bit of work to go on the ship (obviously), but I'm wondering if the colors and values could use some tweaking. I feel like I keep making the same mistakes when it comes to color, but I can't put my finger on it.

Auden100 Pay attention to where you're putting saturation. For this type of composition only the nearest elements should be really bright, everything else get's washed out. With all the great detail you have toward the back of the boat the intensity was too high. Also the foreground fishing vessel needs to be more vibrant. Here's a quick adjust, I'm sure You'll take it a million times farther. Might I also Add that I love your painting so far. Plus your skill made this image really easy do color adjusting.

Auden: that's looking pretty good to me, take it further an im sure it will really start to show, as the other person said desaturation is one good way to show depth and highlight detail. Doing a depth of view type blur, like a "surface blur" on far away objects/past horizon might also give that affect, but i love where your goin with it!

Here is an update on mine, fixed some perspective issues, started greyscaling, and messing with other stuff, coming along nice but i still feel something is wrong. maybe it's the design of the ship, or maybe something else. Any ideas guys?

Your perspective is off, the whole left side of the image should probably be shunted down a bit :p. Get a grid on there, if you're using photoshop you can filter>vanishing point and construct one pretty quickly.

Natzuur-JK
November 14th, 2009, 06:57 AM
You sure? its a 2 point perps, here is my grid-over, i see none that are majorly off, few that are just just very slightly off. I had an original grid but lost it due to layer merging. =(

both vanishing points are off screen slightly as per my original thumbnail.

Battousaii, I love this piece, I think you should give it a little more time just to tighten up the main focal point, maybe one of the ships, the image is great but one of the ships or your main subject would read better in focus, just a little so our eyes are drawn directly to it. Since there is no atmosphere in space (obviously), I'm not even sure if the color becomes more desaturated with bigger distance,
or objects just become less detailed. Plus the bounce light is a real bugger... curse you Universe!

Look at colourful nebulas at gazillions of lightyears away, are they less saturated? There are no air particles in space, thus no sfumatto. Besides, nebulas rock! Put a big colourful nebula in your life, or in your background layer at least :sungod:

It's not as bad as you say, Lakka. Might check your composition a bit. There's a lot going on the right and not much on the left. Balancing it out a bit might help.

Just something as simple as a small sailboat at the end of the dock can help.

Wow everbodys images are coming along quite nicely, great to see so many varied styles, but all of them work so well =) Can't wait to see them finished!

Here is my update for now. I don't know if I like teh "force field" gate type thing, and i def have a lot of details to paint in still, and the ship is very desaturated still, but I think it's coming along.

I have a question tho, when does the final entry usually end, like 11:59pm of the 16th or what?

Kelly x - Maybe I'll just finish late, dont think it can be done before it's due.

No name brand - I'd consider making the ship smaller, right now it's enormous.

I want to kill myself now.
Had painted up quite a bit already when my computer suddenly decides to restart. I hadn't saved anything, none, nada, ričn, everything lost.

FUCK!

Right when I decided to join an EOW after a while.
fate's not in my favor...

Awww :(

Let me guess, the save button was constantly too far away, and you just wanted finish that last part and then just some more details, but then your computer crashed and you got that feeling like you were just about to save it, and in reality you were just thinking how time consuming and distracting saving actually is, but now you've learned your lesson and it will never happen again... until next time. Amirite ? :blahblah:

But really, it's too bad. Your work is always awesome.

Haha, just about right! :D
I was painting for about 30-40 minutes and occasionally thought about saving when I didn't and just kept on going because the image was looking very promising (that's why it hurts even more losing everything). Then I got a phonecall about a cool commission which I agreed on. Hung up and turned to my computer screen deciding that I wanted to now save the file. Right then the computer restarts. It was really weird... :S
I am trying to make a connection between the call and the restart... haha

thanks also! :)

A bit to late, scanner broke down, but Id like some crits anyways.

Hope to finish this weeks caravan topic in time instead!

Not sure about the lil iland city or the clif city to the left of the picture but looked kinda naked without them. Still, the picture lose some focus when their there.
