Hi,

I hope this is the correct place to ask this question. I am currently working towards a 2d design BFA (Its under construction on what it will be called, but my focus is 2d design. I wanna be a concept artist, like you all.) and I realized I do not know when a work is finished. Which surprised me, since I think that is an obvious answer for most.

I am trying to write up an artist statement for the project I'm currently working on and in that statement, this question came up. I would like to know how you fine folk figure out when a piece is finished. What makes it a finished piece?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, much appreciated. :3

A piece is never finished.

It's often said that a successful painting takes two people: one to paint it, and one to smack the artist upside their head before they ruin it.

I've always liked that saying.

As commercial artists, though, I suspect the answer you'll hear most often is "when the deadline hits."

A piece is never finished.

...only abandoned.
