Are you speaking of newsprint? I guess not cause that's more of a gray.

Parchment can be brownish, or beige but it's kind of pricey.

The cheapest thing I can think of would be to hunt down the rolls of paper they make bags out of. I have a friend who got a huge roll of it. It's tough, brown, and you get it in bulk. So if you could go ask a paper company for any spare they may have, they'd probably give it to you. Be sure to have a friend with you to help haul it.

And by spare, i mean scrap. There should be an odd roll that they can't use all the paper off of, here or there.

Manila paper might be an option. Costs a bit more than newsprint but is still pretty cheap

THanks for the info, ill look into the paper rolls, the things i have found that would meet my prefrences is mainly recicled paper, but the sketchbooks they have are to small, the only thing then is if i get rolls of paper and cut them to the same size how to bind them together into a sketchbook

The only one I know of is Cachet Earthbound Sketchbooks, but I cant ever find them. The only site I can find them on is here (http://www.misterart.com/g5289/Cachet-Earthbound-Sketch-Books.htm) and I have never heard of that site before so I am not sure if I want to place an order. The sketchbook also comes in a ring bound. Also Moleskines have kinda of a tan paper.

There are people here who make their own sketchbooks. I couldn't tell you exactly who they are but maybe someone else can.

I believe you could cut a bunch of paper down and glue one edge of the stack into some kind of cover/binder. You could also look into wiring or using lanyards.

Ultimately buying paper in bulk is the way to go. Especially if you're in art school or planning to draw a lot. I love sketchbooks but I also have spent a ton of money on them when I could have just gotten a role of paper for much cheaper.

Watch out for some of that bulk roll warping paper. Some of it is kind of semi-waterproofed stuff that isn't going to take to some media.

Ive heard of people getting regular sketch paper and then using light coffee to dye it to a light brownish color or a beige, or a deeper brown depending on how strong the coffee is.

It slips my mind at the moment how to keep the paper from wrinkling, but it's doable from what I'm told.

If you're gonna go the brown paper bag paper route then why not just go to your local grocer and ask if they have a box or two of spare paper bags that are already cut and folded , save you the trouble of finding a paper mill and hauling a giant roll of paper. Then just cut the paper and staple it together, or sew it together on one side and BAM cheap sketchbook.

Can't find a link, but at boarders they have all of these cheap brown sketchbooks. Here are some things I could find a link for:

http://www.bookbinders.com/BASIC-KRAFT-PAGES-SKETCHBOOK-5x7_p_40.html I think this is the same sketchbook Nathan Fowkes uses.

I have gone through a hardcover 8.5x11 and am working on a wirebound 9x12 now. I buy from Utrecht all the time and never had a problem, so I would suggest them. If you want, I can post some art I've done with that paper, but it's basically the same tone as the covers pictured.

try artgallerystore.net - not sure what they have but you might find what you are looking for.

Toned sketchbooks in the UK at least are stupidly expensive. Nope, don't need heavyweight pastel paper..("Ingres" brand, bit too thick for generic sketchbook..)

Get a bunch of paper and a hole punch / ring binder might be an option.

Aside from online, after looking through every art store within a 30 mile radius, I stumbled on one at Barnes and Noble.. Not sure if they would still have them, but it's a great little sketchbook.

As of 2 years ago you could get a stack of paper bound with a plastic spiral at Kinkos for $6 or $7. They sometimes don't like punching through a piece of cardboard for the backing but if I pointed out that they punch a stack of paper twice as thick as the cardboard they do it- usually. I bought lots of different colored paper at a craft store in the scrapbook section. A little pricey that way or if you have an office paper store like Kelly Paper near you you can buy 500 sheets 8.5x11 for like $10. I love Kelly Paper btw--you can get all kinds of paper and it's cheap.

I have also made my own by twisting a wire around a dowel and feeding it through holes I drilled. I stack the paper and the covers and then put a piece of plywood on each side like an extra set of book covers and clamp it all together. The extra set of plywood covers prevent the drill from tearing through the 1st and last pages and the covers--it'll still be a smooth hole.

The black sketchbook here is from Kinkos.

I wouldn't suggest using the 4 rings like the middle one. I glued them shut but they still come apart and the pages like to rip with only 4 little rings holding them.
