that's it I give up! how, in photoshop or painter, do you isolate line art from the white background of a scanned image, so as to paint under it?!??!?! I just can't work it out! I want to put the sketch on another layer, then paint underneath it, preserving the lines.

Hello
In photoshop set your scanned artwork as 'multiply' in your layer blending mode options. You can it find in a box at the top of your layers window.
If you now make that as your top layer and paint everything on layers below, that will do the trick.
The scanned image will not interfere with the any of the color values that sit below it.
Good Luck!

Hi,

In Painter 8 (instructions would be very similar for earlier versions Painter 6 and Painter 7):

1. Open your scanned image.

2. Use Select > All (or Ctrl/Command+A) to select the entire Canvas.

3. Using the Layer Adjuster tool (click the F key to activate the Layer Adjuster tool), click inside the selection to lift the line art to a Layer. This is Layer 1.

4. Double click Layer 1 in the Layers list to open the Layer Attributes dialog box and type a descriptive name, like Line Art Layer.

5. With the Line Art Layer positioned where you want it (click and drag with the Layer Adjuster tool to reposition the Line Art Layer), and with Line Art Layer highlighted in the Layers list, click the Lock icon located above the Layers list. This will ensure that your line art won't be moved or accidentally painted or altered in any way while you work on your image.

6. With Line Art Layer highlighted in the Layers list, go to the left drop down list (Composite Methods) at the top of the Layers palette and change the Composite Method to Gel. This makes the white background transparent.

7. Either paint on the Canvas or on one or more Layers that you've clicked and dragged down the Layers list, below the Line Art Layer.
