wassup dere peoples? aighty--this is my senior thesis from parsons school of design.
i chose to do a mixture of the three musketeers with some metropolis ( thea von harbou novel (( really friggin great read BTW)) fritz lang silent film was based on it.. etcetc)
im happy with the work--but truth be told i should have twice as much of it. oh well, live and learn, and procrastinate another day,
id really love any crits, but Id especially appreciate any wisdom any professionals want to empart. Im going to be looking for a full-time position with a film or video game studio at the end of the school year, so any advice you can give about what else i need to work on, or areas of improvement would just mean the whole world to me.
i need to focus mroe on environments and action poses--gotta break out of teh standard character frontal pose thing--
oh.and if dan "the man" milligan is reading--"dont sleep bro--im coming for blood this feb 10th" :batman:
hope ya dig teh work peeps

WOW
those are all awesome. I can't say anything other than I really really really want to see tyboogies 3 musketeers movie. :)
I suppose you are right about the frontal pose thing, but on the other hand looking at those great action poses proves you arent limited to static characters like that, so I don't think it's a problem at all.
These really remind me of Yoshitaka Amano, like all the designs for final fantasy 6... I desperately wish I could work in such a beautiful, lyrical, stylized way like this.... Best of luck, but I don't think you'll need it!

While i might question your style based on my personal tastes that have nothing to do with crits, you do need to study up on anatomy, unless, ofcource, you deliberatly ignore the rules in favor of style. Also, if those are concept drawings, i would try to make them cleaner in order to show more detail.
Other then that... good luck.

This would be so incredibly awesome as an animated short. (Ideally cel animated with a mixture of CG.)
Also, in the muted spirit of metropolis and French theatrics, if you ever do get this turned into something, I suggest making it a pantomime. (As a side-bonus, it cuts out the middleman where voice-acting is concerned.)
Do some studying up to find some good and appropriate French opera music to use as well (assuming you haven't already) if you ever do get this turned into something.

ty, absolutely rockin! as for the anatomy, i love your interpretation, you are bringing something of yourself to the work. i look at this and and feel inspired by something new. through your style you give the piece atmosphere and a perverse reality. this is the kind of work that a director takes visual queues from and gets his own inspiration as how to make his film capture some aspect of the world you have made for him.
instead of just being a tool to flesh out someone else's ideas you become the creative gear that drives the whole imaginative machine.
excellent work!

Hot diggity, Ty. I was blown away. I second or third or whatever having this made into an animation. Heck, I'd help if you'd let me. Short or full length, this would be so awesome to see. I wish I had some actual critique for you so I didn't sound like a fanboy. Nice job.
Sincerely,
Chris

NICE!! man there is so much character in this stuff..
the costume designs are really creative man.. the armor could be a tad more functional for my taste,, but i think its always best to start with something you think looks good and then find a way to make it function..
great stuff ty!

I love how heavily ornate everything is! and the city scape covered with gothic cathedrals blocking out the light, fantastic!
to follow-up on everyone else's comments, the style and attitude is present and strong in these images but I think to supplement it in your portfolio you should do one or two images that have the characters with armor that has more functional joints (to help 3d animators build the models). But don't lose the energetic action!

Great stuff tyboogie
I really like your compositions and scenes in which story seems more fleshed out. I guess its always a kick to see the characters in their environments. You have a few of those.
Maybe a few more would help cement your vision. I also enjoy the silhouettes of the guards.
Great body of work..

excellent work...a cohesive world...nice compositions and artistic qualities...the stairway piece is my fave.
some of the toned paper sketches lack the flair of the color images...
great movement too.
keep it up man...you could make a cool ass game with that stuff.

tyboogie- great thesis idea! i love metropolis the film, now I'm going to have to read the book (didn't know about it)
I love your style, character design and especially the costumes. You're really coming into your own. The forms and shapes you're coming up with are different. They stand out. Just keep it up dude, and don't stop going to the Met, cus whatever you're doing to get ideas is working!
btw- I'm also working on a film idea inspired by frizt lang's metropolis. we'll have to talk sometime about it...

Both guys in the red armor made me so happy.
Excellent work. The slight distortions of the figures work great and give a wonderful sense of character.

okay, i think this stuff is just beautiful! i love the character designs and the feel presented by the costumes and environs. I get the feeling that (and correct meif i am wrong) you were going for the look of complete over indulgence, that is pretty much the norm for the society of metropolis, and using the trappings of dress to make the people look twisted and almost inhuman now.
the cardinals guards, now they, look really good. i love the whole design and the mask....while only a small section of this large body of good work is my favorite.
My crit is only this...the city scape image which i imagine is supposed to look crowded, is REALLY crowded and a bit hard to read. but im dont know the size of the original so i really dont know if this is even a valid crit.
anyway, love it :peace:

These are beautifully imaginative, lots of movement, I can see thEse animated in a dark stylized animated tale.
With all the talent on CA we can make a movie ourselves.

Ty-
I am so pleased to see the final product here. There is so much style and grace in your approach to the subject matter, and that is what I am always looking for and striving for myself.
I especially enjoy your approach to color. I think there is so much drama in your color choices alone, that everything else could almost be secondary.
I agree that there are some anatomy issues. Now, I say that only from this perspective: I like your exaggeration of anatomy, that is what I enjoy doing myself, however, even things that are exaggerated have to begin in reality, and I think you have a tendency to over-simplifiy feet and sometimes hands.
It's OK to have your characters sometimes standing or balancing on their tippy-toes, but make sure you pay attention to how the weight would affect how the toes would then look, do you know what I mean?
The red armored knight is by far my favorite character.
Wow, I can really picture the movement and action as it is apparent that everyone else can too. That is a tribute to the success of this project.
I commend you for a job well done. So now here's the issue: with such a well-defined and personal style, it might be difficult to find a project that is willing to take on such a personal vision, so that is going to be a tough road to hoe. But if you stick with it and avoid compromise, I am sure you will be rewarded in the end, as I am sure folks like Foster, Andrew Jones, Puddnhead, Jason Manley, etc. will attest to.
Great stuff man. Keep it up.

Oh and one more thing, your sense of pattern design and costume design is some of the best I have seen on this site and elsewhere. That is one of your strongest traits n my opinion.

deth jester--thanks again for the advice--appreciate it
joshuea the james--yea man i know--i just have a short attention span for my own pieces. i think concept art is a perfect artistic direction for me as i get bored with an image quickly--but you have a good point-- ineed to stick with some things longer--thx
bkweough--good point--ill let that marinate and try to apply it later
kambei--your absolutely right. i need more environmental shots w/ characters existing in their world. thank you
jason--glad it feels cohesive. funny you mention the game thing. that was sort of teh direction i was thinking. needs a design doc. thanks man

targete--thanks m,an--glad you liked this stuff. im ready to make a movie..lets do it.
birglecutt--hey bro. the hands and feet thing were also mentioned by mike corriero--so im gonna make sure not to overlook them in the future. you bring up a great point about sticking to your guns and style...it will be interesting to see if i can keep it working to my benefit. thanks again for the praise--im glad your impressed
Epiphany--the senior thesis is basically you come up with your own concept for a project and implement it in a class taht meets twice a week. at teh end of the project a bunch of jurors will judge teh projects and choose which ones and how much of each will go into teh fabled "senior gallery show" whereby you will become a famous artist, or something like that
thanks again for all teh feddback everyone. now im gonna give my fingers a break from typing.
