hey. im a self taught artist with no training whatsoever im hoping to become a well known established concept artist as well as illustrator and im here to learn. any tips tricks suggestions are more than welcome.
one of my most favorite concept artists as well as illustrators has to be Marko Djurdevic.. crazy about his work and his style... i personally havent developed a style yet.. hoping to... i feel like my foundations are weak... really wanna improve in those areas... i wanna focus more on realism... im most comfortable with a pencil and paper... but im tryin to expand into the digital medium... im also a big fan of scott robertson and jason chan as well as El Coro, Andrew Jones, Feng Zhu and Nox.

im currently drawing every page in Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth. Im really hoping this improves my skills...

there are decent design ideas in these two pieces but they are weak because you're lacking anatomy training. just keep doing figure drawings and referencing from life. If you're not planning on going to any type of art school you need to really focus and accept the criticism of other artists. Post the figure drawing work you're doing from the book you said you have. We can give you pointers and tips to help you along the way. Good luck, I hope to see more.

a friend of told me to deviate a bit and try something different instead of jus sticking to human type things... so i tried my hand at some robots... some of my first attempts at them... their small quick sketchs jus playin around with shapes and stuff

Hey, nice start here.
Don't be worried about creating a style, I think you should focus on more technical stuff like studying value and anatomy. The rest will follow.
Just get comfortable drawing, test different medias etc.

Looking forward to more stuff. :)

hey there!

thanks for being my first comment here on my finally finished post :)

here are some helpful tips that helped me and hopefully will help you too.

I never had any significant art training myself except for a couple high school classes which did not help at all. If you would like to keep studying figures it may help, but i personally never found it helpful. What i would suggest starting i order to help refine you skills is work from the head down. find a pictures you like that you took of friends, or find in a magazine, or online of an actor/actress. Then, print it out and make a grid of the picture (if you dont know how to do this you can ask me), and make a grid on the paper that you are wanting to use. Then draw, each box at a time what you see. doing this to start out will help you to realize the shape of a face from different angles, because when you see a picture you dont realize the shape because of the shading.

Then after you have done this, you can start shading and defining features. For this i use different pencils depending on their hardness and softness to get the different shading levels. And i start with a very light shade and do the darkest shade last. i also use a tissue to help shade, dont use your finger because the oils from your fingers can sometimes make the shading mess up, and the pencil hard to erase. you have to be very patient when you shade because it takes a lot of time to get it right.

then after you finish that drawing draw more and more, and i guess post it on here and get some tips on how to make that drawing better. Also, buy a gum eraser from the store. those are always nice to have. Paper that i like to use is strathsmore bristol vellum. you can always send me a message if you have a question!

enjoy!!

Other then the anatomy problems (which I face my self, see my SB for proof) lol there are some pretty good ideas
@Icecoldtears4321 - Sucks that they don't help you, I find them very helpful studying them, even in Art 1 were doing it right now.
Anywho hope to see some more.

I am just saying that personally for myself, that anatomy study and such did not help much. This is partially due to the fact that i do not have formal art training. For someone such as you, who i am guessing is in an art class, studying the human body can help a lot because you are not teaching yourself, and many times you have human models in front of you.

Furthermore, that is still a personal opinion. People learn in many different fashions. I was just giving some helpful hints, things that helped me.

Oh, and what pencils do you use ?

You haz no talent perhaps, but I'm sure tenacity can cover that up. At least, that's what I depend on ...

I'll subscribe to this thread.

Hey syk3, thanks for dropping by my sb :) Your stuff is showing improvement, those anatomy studies of Hogarth and Bridgeman are definitely paying off. I would also suggest studying some more basic shape construction and proportion work for your figure/character drawings. Look up Vilppu or actually one his students has a good series of videos on youtube:

cool sketches !!! you grow very fast !!
Anatomy sketches very helpful thing. You need to make it as much as you can. But don't just copy it. Try to remember lines and forms , think about forms , imagine different corners of forms.
Goodluck !

Hey syk3, it's good to see you experimenting, the last piece is showing more improvement! In regards to your question about environment design, I guess it really depends on what you're looking to do? There are by far more qualified people on this forum to give you advice, but I think for the time being working on things like perspective and really getting your objects to look solid will be helpful for everything you want to draw and paint. I would recommend doing some still life drawings of simple objects first and build from there. If you have any specific questions or need a friendly critique, let me know :)

Hey, you improved a lot since you started this sketchbook, good work!

I've seen that you did some studies from Burne Hogarth's books, but his anatomy is not really correct so I would suggest learning anatomy rather from Bridgman and Loomis.

Those two first paintings on this page are nice, you did good job with colours, but watch the edges - they are often blurry in your paintings.

Anyway, do more studies and keep posting :)

oh I loved Army of Two! really cool game to play in co-op.

Your painting, so far it's not bad. I'm just wondering, is this supposed to be a fan art piece of Army of Two? because if it is, it's hard to tell who is who. What I mean is, you know how Rios is bigger than Salem (I think those were their names)? Well at the moment they both have the same body type, so it's hard to tell who is who.

About painting digitally I don't know how to help since the painting is in such an early stage. Just keep working on it in black and white and then add color, some people find that way the best way to paint.

Also, you should resize your pictures, it's very hard to see the whole artwork when you have to scroll all over.

By the way, you have some really cool studies of hogarth, keep those up! you'll improve pretty fast that way
