I started to do these a couple years ago. I simply start drawing somewhere on the page, usually with eyes, then a face, then fill up the space around not knowing too much where it's heading. It's quite fun to do.

In this one i soon saw a Jimi Hendrix king of persona developping.

Did these couple weeks ago. In these i tried to create/find motif that could work for foliage and found out that i could use that weaving patern in more ways than just for foliage or trees.

It started as a random face sketch and it ended up as a texture/motif rendering exploration.

More sketches, 3 to 5 are from observation. Here I tried to stylise a bit the shapes and shades.

The last is a final illustration done in photoshop. For that type of work, I used to do the lines on scratchboard. Now i'm using a cintiq. Much easier to explore shapes and motifs with the infinite undo.

I'm pretty happy with this one, especially with the decorative patterns. I also discovered .5 mm mechanical pencil with this image. It's great for details and easy to get good contrast.

I've been doing a lot of animal sketching lately. I never been very good with anatomy so i finally decide to do something about it. I dig a very good book for drawing animal "The art of animal drawing" by Ken Hultgren. So far it's the best i found to learn to draw (ultimatly) without reference.

The sketches that are almost perfect, are most likely directly copied from the book. Ultimatly i'd like to be able to use that anatomy knowlege to make more stylised rendering like the later sketches.

How do you keep the .... charcoal ... or graphite from getting everywhere?!

With charcoal, my hand does not touch the paper, i work vertically and i used compressed charcoal which does not smear as much as regular one.. With graphite, i used a not too thick book to rest my drawing hand.

I love your style! I could see any of the things you posted hanging on a wall or in a book without much refining to the design... You seem to have a fantastic grasp on the more compositional aspects of 2D stuff and how to hold the visual interest of your viewer, something which I think becomes a struggling point for a lot of people who set out to make art. Definitely much harder to master than simply learning all the perspectival issues of drawing.

I'm so jealous of your ability to wield charcoal and graphite. I'll take it as motivation to improve in that area myself. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks Drex for comments. True, my stuff rend to be more 2d, I guess i like decorative approaches more than the realistic 3D.

Just had a revelation yesterday. I came upon a new graphite pencil, the faber-castel grip 2001. My first impression was wow, precise like a harder lead and soft at the same time. I can easaly saturate the paper , good for dark area while having minimal graphite residu (just like a harder lead)

For decorative lines, its just amazing. Was using mechanical pencil before because of the steady lines and that i didn,t like to sharpen regular pencil. I'm convert back to lead pencil now.

I have been exploring some decorative stuff here. Doesn't look too good but was a great exercise.
