Sorry for the reboot but it was made clear to me that my previous rate was too low. Here’s the new 411. . .

Project 1a: 8 pages penciled and inked (this will be the one half of a 16 page first issue)
Project 1b: Cover art and character sketches.
Payment: $60/page for 8 sequential black & white pages ($480). $100 for a truly ‘kick-ass’ cover and $100 for 5 pages of character sketches ($200). (Character sketches: 1 page for each of the 4 main characters. Each page should have at least 3 clear pencil sketches (ie, full body front, head shot, action pose, etc.) and then 1 final page of supporting character sketches (4 different characters on 1 page). Payment structure (preferably via online transfer) will be 20% after the first page (of each project) is received/approved, 40% at an agreed upon progress point (this will be different for 1a and 1b and assumes receipt/approval) and then 40% at the completion of each project. (Note: I would prefer one artist agree to do both projects.)
Preferred Style: Somewhere between Tim Sale and Frank Miller. (If you like what you’ve read and think your style would work please don’t hesitate to contact me though.) Please be able to convey emotion (facial expression) as some close-ups (eyes, mouth) are key to the story. Cars, room interiors and wide-angle POV shots will come into play regularly as well. Urban settings are Washington, DC, Seattle, Cape Cod, and a college campus so basic familiarity with (or the ability to do research on) those places would be appreciated. There will also be a couple scenes in the forests/mountains of the Pacific NW (Oregon/Washington state). Also, this is a multi-ethnic comic (if that matters to anyone) with Asian, black, Hispanic, and white, male and female characters of varying ages. Finally, I’m not looking for a lot of heavy-handed detail. Think ‘more with less.’
Genre: Dark, shadows, mature, some graphic violence (light firearms, blood), little/no nudity/sex (though sex is implied at times with shadows and silhouettes). The setting is in the modern day/immediate future. For the story think streetwise X-men with less sci-fi.
Deadline for Submissions: 11/22/2009
Deadline for Project Completion (tentative): 12/31/2009
Some Details: The sequential pages will be in black and white with spots of color used for dramatic effect. The cover will likely be in black and white as well though I’m open to the idea of a color cover. I plan to self-publish it via Ka-Blam (or some other online method). I have detailed character descriptions and 3 issues (of a 4 issue arc) scripted so far. I also have ideas for further issues. The master plan is to have all 4 issues self-published over the next 12 months (with hopefully enough interest to justify a TPB volume). In a perfect world the same great artist will do all four issues. The main objective (right now) is to get the first issue completed and use it as a resume/portfolio builder. The script for a 16 page issue #1 is pretty tight and I have a specific concept in mind for the visuals. But I’m open-minded and will always consider suggestions. Our goal should be to have a great finished product.
More Details: I like to do a lot of research and will provide references images for characters, certain panels, scenes, etc. This is to convey what I have in mind. Again, I’d love input/suggestions though. I always try to use fewer words rather than more in a panel. Visually, I expect a lot of room for the art with few captions. Therefore panels need to be somewhat dramatic. I’ll concede I’m still relatively new to this genre so again suggestions are always appreciated.
Even More Details: I own the creator rights but any subsequent profits from the issues (after expenses) are split 50%. I’ll be happy to flesh this out via email correspondence. This may never matter but I figure it is a good idea to get it out of the way early.

Please email samples (and references if available) to the42n8s1@gmail.com. Please do not just send me links to your homepage/online portfolio. I must be able to print out at least one black and white sequential page on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. This is what I will use to make my final decision. (I’m sorry but I can’t make a decision looking at art work on a computer screen.) I will wait until after the submission deadline before contacting anyone. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for the read.

PS: If you have suggestions on how to improve my ad (ie, you’re an artist and think: my rate is still ridiculously low, more details needed, etc.) please feel free to email me (. . .be gentle;-).

There are a couple hours left for submissions. Thank all of you for the overwhelming response though. I hope to finalize my decision in the next couple days. There is an immense amount of talent out there. Best of luck to all of you who do not receive a direct response from me.
