Just another quick skethup model of a temple.. I have been designing a lot of buildings for a project over the last couple of months and have come to really enjoy it.:) Hopefully i'll have the time to take this into PS and finish the render.
I will post the work for the current project when the NDA' are cleared.

Incredible work. would you mind explaining some of your methods to some of us here. Your post work is really interesting and adds a lot to the design.
Lone Wolf

parker17-thanks. My fundamental approach to design in sketchUp is exploration. First know what you are trying to achieve and then experiment. I dont' use any fancy tricks with SketchUp, I push and pull shapes and merge them together and see what comes out. The key thing in design is exploration, and sketchUp makes this very easy and fast.
Let me know if this is what you wanted to know? Or if you have any other questions.:)
Here is a recently released piece i did Jan. 2010.

really cool stuff. just curious though, when you color your pieces, do you export it as a 2D file and color it with something like photoshop?
because I can't for the life of me figure out how to color pieces through sketchup
Lone Wolf
May 12th, 2010, 04:23 PM
Ebag90-thanks. You can use the paint bucket in SketchUp to color your surfaces, it's really easy. It all depednds on how i feel, but it makes the coloring easier if you color your model in sketchup using the paint bucket. Then I export a 2d file in photoshop and do the rest of the rendering.

Lone Wolf - Your sort of answered my question. I was more curious about your post work in photoshop I guess, or the design outside the push pull of the model shape. Your rendering in photoshop does a lot to add to the overall quality of the art you post. It adds another level of believability to the art, instead of simply stopping and positing a 2d export of the model. (As a great many do). ( Particularly how you get the intricate patterns/designs on the models, I'm guessing some type of mask in PS)
Lone Wolf
May 13th, 2010, 12:31 PM
parker17- In a nutshell my photoshop work consists of soft light and multiple layers over the model.
I use the Dodge and Burn tools in Midtones Mode to bring out the highlights and to deepen shadows. If i need to add any extra bits to the design I simply paint on new design elements.
I use photo textures of metal and dirt and any other texture that i feel would work for the design on soft light layers to give the work a more realistic feel. And I play around with the opacity of these layers to see what works best.Photo Textures and soft light layers are amazing tools that add to the design without altering the model.
As a finish I create two layers of Soft Light called cool and warm.I use a cool color in the shadows and a warm color in the highlighted areas to bring out the design even more.
That's my basic process. Let me know if you need any more info. I personally dont' use masks, but they are a great tool.

Wow...some great work Lone Wolf, but would you suffer an observation that is nagging me?
In your scenes with gunfire, did you use motion blur to create the tracer effect? I ask because to me it appears that all of the bullets are racing toward the guns rather than away from them. This is because the hottest spot of each tracer effect is at the rear or in the direction of the gun.

Idea for a challenge over at cghub.
I wanted to make a clean futuristic operating chamber for Dr. Frankenstein. Instead of him working away in secret in some dank hole, I thought it would be more fun if his work was government sponsored with everything at his dispopal so that he can build the ultimate soldiers. Kick ass. I love tech environments. Great detail. And yes I like the blow up of the mechanical arm design. Good call.
My only comment is that as a sketchup piece its pretty cool but as concept art the composition and lighting aren't helping to tell your story. I barely even noticed the guy standing next to the table. I would love to see the scene a lot darker with most of the illumination coming from the machines and a close up shot of the action.

Hi Wolf. Its nice to see your work in sketchup. The images of different battle vehicle created by you in sketchup is really ecstatic.
But i can give you the information of a sketchup magazine which has vast information about Google Sketchup 8 including sketchup details, images, plugin information, about the 3d basecamp of google sketchup in Boulder, colorado, and many more.
The magazine is called "Sketchup Ur Space" & is created in flash & absolutely free.

I especially like your planetary exploration vehicle, it really has a heavy equipment "feel" to it. Keep up the good work!
EDIT: just noticed this, but the exhaust pipes are incorrect (sorry to nitpick here) there should be a solid tube that runs through the perforated one, otherwise there is no point in having those tubes since the exhaust would exit through the holes long before reaching the top...
