I went to my local art supply store and bought some Sculpey softener, it works great both for softening and smoothing the clay. minus the odor and fumes of lighter fluid. I first softened and kneaded the clay then mixed in some black Fimo "soft" 80/20 (the lesser being blk) then I put in more softener and kneaded it for about 10 minutes, twisting and wedging it until it became all grey. I was careful not to apply too much black because I noticed that the darker the clay, the harder it is to see details and for that matter apply them. I imagine that if you wanted a higher value grey, you'd apply some white. The kneading process can be a little painful on your hands but you have to prepare the clay that way anyway. So in essence while your recoloring the clay, you're also preping it.

for mixing your sculpy you can use a posta maker and just fold and run it through a buch of times or i hear that some of these guys like a food processor.

Thanks. I'll look into the pasta machine. Also I want to look into a dremel to sand it later.
