so... i go to sleep at like 8 pm both the night before last, and last night, and i wake up at 10 pm and just can't sleep anymore. that's a big, fat 4 hours of sleep in the past 2 days. it's 4:30 am now, and i just finished my final of 3 drawings. that, and irc have passed the time.

basically, these drawings are my method of trying to battle insomnia with being productive. yesterday's morning consisted of working on my site... this morning i was feeling more creative- but i'm dead tired now- and i have a lunch/movie date with a gorgeous girl! man, this is gonna be interesting...

was really happy with how a lot of this guy turned out:

i tried to keep the fresh/loose flow in this next piece, but i started tightening up a bit (plus, this was an exercise to break out of doing just heads):

and the last one to lighten the mood a bit, but still using the same tools and colors (obviously):

all done with the beloved dirty marker in painter 6

you are handling that dirty marker really well, my friend. it's amazing, the quality you get into your sketches. i just can't do it digitally.
i would love to see you do some realistic anatomy work though, that way i know you are practising.
wellcome to the freelance life my man, i hope out it works out better for you than it did for me!

Piece #1:
- It's easy to tell you wanted to reign on the stylization aspect of the piece, but there are some flaws in anatomy which bothers me. The main problem i have is the arm and hand. the length of the arm doesn't look like it matchs up with the other. Even with stylization I feel that keeping similar symetrics in anatomy is something that needs to be addressed.
- Also the Thumb on the hand appears to be about the same length as the other fingers, making it seem like he has... 6fingers.
- The shoulder also looks like it's being pushed too hard into the chest because of the confusing upper arm.
- Besides that i truely love this piece, esp the ab area.

Piece #2:
- Flawless. I love it. Continue it if you can. The later at least.
(edit: later was suppose to be "water", i must have been tried too...)

Piece #3:
- Rad. The missing teeth on the lower jaw kinda frightens me though.

Awesome work on all of these feeb.
The first one looks a bit odd on the right shoulder, kinda like the shoulder is coming out of the neck or something..*shrug*
But on the other two.. Amazing!
I especially love the style of that last one, that guy is fucking awesome! The shading style is perfect =D

Mike May, you just rock the party that rocks the body, my brotha! I've been keeping an eye on your site for well over a year, now and I'm diggin' what you've done with it recently. Heck, I've even had the pleasure of chatting with you on ICQ, once or twice. Tell Alan Tew to update his site, already, dammit. And Slap your friend Ryan Wood around and get him to at least post some of his artwork on here, if he's not gonna make a website. Keep kickin' ass. :D

good grief, thanks for the amazing response, everyone. i really appreciate the crits. yah, the shoulders have been a problem for me. i actually drew the arm in that position (on the first one) because i have problems with shoulders. time to go back to anatomy 101, i suppose.

i totally agree with everything you said, davi, except for the thumb being the same length as the fingers thing. do that same pose of your hand... you'll find your thumb and pinky are the same length. even better: pretend you're holding a ball. your fingers all become the same length. that's an evolutionary tactic. if our pinky were a bit longer, for example, it would get in the way when we pick up a rock to throw it (something i read about in "do penguins have knees?").

fantastic crit, tho, davi... i don't want to detract from it. especially since you were so into the last 2. i agree about the missing teeth being kinda disturbing. i was so tired when i drew that, but i made a conscious decision to leave it alone, because i wanted to keep loose but strong.

all right. thanks again, everyone. maybe i'll have some inspiration to do a few more of these today. maybe not. ;P

Feeb, great stuff man. I'm with some of Davi's crits, but I absolutely love this style. I was wondering though, did you ever finish that handbug/creature thing that you posted on Eatpoo a long time ago. I saved all those images, but was wondering if you finished that little beastie yet.

Great job man.

oh MAN! Darrell... amazing! I love that you were inspired. The drawing is simply fantastic. Have any more?

This reminds me that I need to do more, as well.

BTW: one really cool trick I found with using this brush, is that by keeping the method on buildup, you can select the color of the canvas, and the brush color corresponds beautifully. Give it a try (I hope what I'm trying to say makes sense).

you could try color backgrounds,
make it look like manilla paper by
using a very pale yellow.
it looks cool i tried it but my server down cant upload.
