Here's some stuff from a new sketchbook I started. This site has really inspired me to work harder at my drawing and be more dedicated. I'm gonna try to stay focused and keep drawing as much as I can, doing studies, portraits, anatomy, life drawing, and fun stuff too! Anyways here is what I've got so far from the past week or so, hopefully I will stay motivated and continue output. And comments and crit are always welcome!!! ---jake

The Gandolfini one is excellent (as are the rest of course), but you seem to have got the menace in his left side right but it is missing from the right side.

The top figure study is ok, but the shoulders are way out of place. Far to low down. The muscle from shoulder into neck is at about 10 to 20 degrees, even on a complete meat head.

The other face ones look great, but I feel they are a little flat still. You need to work on the shading a bit to pull the characters out of the page a bit.

The bottom two are well cool. No crits from me there.

Nice stuff,

Cheers

Sleepy

sleepyhead- thanks for the crits! yah that first one is really crooked, that was my bad for doing additive drawing and not looking at the drawing as a whole (by this I mean adding features as I went instead of planning it out). I will try to flesh out my portraits more, I have the bad habit of getting scared to add too much value, which would make my faces flatter.....and I also suck at rendering, something I need to work at!

......oh yah and I forgot to post these pics with the rest, time for sleep!

School just started today, which means either more stuff or less. I dunno we'll see how it goes. All I know is I'm so very tired right now, I need to switch up my sleeping pattern real quick. Here's a couple dsgs, a portrait study, and one of the characters I'm developing for an animation project.

love the last portrait, man.
He's got some weird look in his face, which makes him even more interesting (apart from the nice rendering).
Is this from life or photo ref.?

Keep it up, esp. your portrait stuff!

great stuff dude, I like the portrait of the woman laying on the pillow best, my only comment is that the tone around her face is rough and out of place. It looks like you may have switched to a softer pencil. This is only really apparent due to the delicacy of the handling of the face, maybe if it was smudged, or evened out. just a thought.

that anatomy book you're using is a good one.
oh and the first line drawing is prime too.
keep posting

hey thanks for all the replies guys!

famboozled-- thanks man! I really wanted to create a sense of movement in the dsg, with the one basket being thrown back from the explosion, and the other pulling back on the balloon from the blast

Jeff- thanks man, its ref from a magazine

empty- thank you too! btw I'm hoping to finish my rush design this weekend

steak- yah I started with a mechanical pencil, and then switched to a 6b pencil, kind of a leap in value there, I see what you mean

obid- wow thanks, sometimes I think I'm a good artist and then I come to this site and get humbled all the time, color is another thing I need to work on similiar to the way I need to work on values

main loop- yah I'm trying to get more shading in, its always a scary thing for me but.........

..........the good news is that I talked to my teacher today about taking independent study since I couldn't attend the time slot of a class I need to graduate this semester. this means I get to decide my own course outline, and I decided to do portraits! which means portraits studies every week and 4-5 large pastel portraits through the semester. here is one of the large pastel portraits I did 2 semesters ago to get an idea of where I want to go with the large portraits, as well as today's dsg (trying out painter!) and a page of some short studies

Jackal,

Nice work. I am very impressed with that tonal version of the goddess Athena (I think...). Also liked the balloon war pic. Made me laugh because I've seen those balloons all over the place while I was growing up and it brought back some delusions of grandeur. Keep up the good work.

Sincerely,
Chris

jarvis-- thanks I spent like almost 9 strait hours getting those tones chunked out

........yeah so I'm in some sort of drawing slump, I've done several portraits and most of them look like complete garbage. plus I've been sick for like the past week or so and have finally recovered. I need some inspiration, I forgot my motivation. (however I did recently find out I was accepted into VFS for the fall!)

port studies, dsg, an old pic I tooled around with in photoshop, a storyboard for an animation project

btw I am going have to start "trimming the fat" so to speak on this sketchbook once I start to run out of room on photobucket

man talk about a merging of the two things that scare me the most.....the shider or the spark the shark/spider thing, love it but now im never gonna sleep.

your portraits are spankalicious

the story board is a bit hard to follow tho, maybe numbering the panels..?

Phuzion
February 16th, 2004, 04:06 AM
heh heh, that storyboard's cool. One question though. Why is the peg register at the top of the page? If there's one thing you should take from Disney, it's bottom pegging. Yeah. Nice work btw. I'm feelin' it. Keep it up man! Peace

JackalAnubis
February 20th, 2004, 05:16 AM
cinsev-- thanks, the storyboards don't have every single shot transition accounted for, I've added more frames to tighten things up, I guess things move left to right, top to bottom.

phuzion- thank you, um well this is going to be a 3D animation project so the pegging is pretty unimportant. I just got this storyboard sheet from a guy in my group for the frame ratio.

ok small bump, a some port studies using ad markers and such

steak-tron, rubygenesis, and xia-- thanks for the positive feedback! people like tones eh? yeah I've been fooling around with the ad markers and it's a lot easier to shade a face by only using 3 values, than using all 10 values!

(btw anyone know another service that provides direct linking?) um yeah and my teacher wasn't feeling my studies for my independent study class, he wants more of the larger ones like the orange chick. so this means less portrait studies (except for template sheets I guess). anyways here is a portrait study/char development pic and some thumbs

I love those black/white inkings! If you don't mind me giving a little tip, try playing more with line thickness, as some drawings tend to be a little flat; for example in your last images, the robot on the rocks. It has a rather big outline which almost instantly flattens your whole figure.
Well that's about all, very nice stuff overall, I'm jealous :)

edit: took a closer look, and those sketches don't have this problem, so perhaps you intended to give those comic images this style.. I'll shut up now.

JackalAnubis
March 20th, 2004, 05:02 AM
renzu- I like lineweight, I think I made it way to heavy on that robo in the background, it should have been lighter, or then made the lineweight in the foreground heavier
phuzion-thanks man, I'm trying to keep at it

so yeah I've have had an abundance of free time lately and instead of getting more work done, I've been slacking off more than usual. poor form jake, poor form indeed.....anyways....the start of a series for my figure class, a study, and a large port WIP (I'll update when its dun)

April 19th, 2004, 09:34 PM
JackalAnubis , ive seen all your thread,
now is my time to write my impressions
about your work ;)

Well i see that everyone likes your portratits
with linework and markers , its really great,
you are seeing the volume and planes in
face and capture that well, but you could
also try that more on hair , try to see
what part is facing to the light source and
what parts are facing the contrary of light
like folds of a piece of paper .... i hope
i explained well......

and as you said early in the tread ... capture
the whole and then start detail ,, grab the
big mass overall first :D :D :D

and keep practicing even you noticed when
you were drawing frequently
you raised the bar in your
drawing meter and when doing nothing you
had to start again to gain your level......

YOU CAN DO IT :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

do photo reference work when you dont feel
very inspirated, and creative work when
you feel confortable and active and you will
be rolling all the time :) :) :) :) :)

Best wishes

Saludos y Buena Suerte

This is the first time I've checked out your sketchbook and I looked through all the work. I wanted to say that your rendering has really improved over the span of time from the start until now.
Also your linework is great- it has a lot of energy and is also very clean. You also use different styles of line according to the subject which is cool too.
Lastly I think your colour stuff is improving too.
Don't have any real crits but I thought I'd add a little more than just 'cool stuff dude!'

not that there's anything wrong with that...

jackal,
I fuckin love those thumbnails, your portraits are looking quite nice too but I'm seeming to gravitate towards the little guys more - you have great concepts that would be awesome to see fleshed out...

I like the contrast/shape thing your doing with the portraits. My only suggestion now is to let the cast shadows be the only thing that describes the planes - like with the pic with two faces. I think the old guy would have more presence if the left side faded into the background. Just something about the outline that flattens out the cheek.

great stuff dude, hope yo' broke-ass thumb gets better.

scooting through your thread was a treat, Jackalanubis!

Your portrait stuff is sweet. And some inspiring concepts too, in particular that hand/feet sketch.

A suggestion: focus some more on figure drawings. You got the rendering down, and your portraiture is -as said- very good, but the full body shots aren't as convincing.

Oddo and Ra Havok --- thanks, and yes I need to work on figures. I'm going to keep taking figure drawing classes through the summer (hopefully!), and am going to keep doing anatomy and whatnot to try to figure the thing out
brkofdon --- people seem to dig that hands griffon alot, maybe I should do more with it some time
roger---thank you, I'm trying to keep updating regularly
steaktron --- yeah, I have the tendency to outline things that shouldn't be outlined, you have a very good point with it receding/fading into the background. I will try to do more "value" and less "line". I have a feeling my thumb is going to be swollen/sprained for quite a while.

If your goal is to have a nice composition on the page, it's good to think about what you're about to draw before you jump right into it. If you have an idea for what you're going to make, think about what kinds of composition or design you could use, and what would work best. Here is an example of a fairly basic composition scheme where I

I prefer to use a more organic compositional device. I like sweeping and undulating curves so that's what I'm going to use here, but you could do something more geometric.

when designing your page work the page as a whole and the drawing should develop organically! the purpose of composition is to make your eyes move all over the page, or maybe to a particular spot. marko has an excellent thread on character composition, check it out here! (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22701)

I still remember seeing you draw that picture of the cyborg pointing while the ship launches behind him in room La Quinta room 238 - I had to take a picture of it because it was so impressive...

I really love the clarity of your work. Sometimes such clean lines seem to take out of an image but your lines seem to have the opposite effect and add a little extra punch to the work. It's good to see you trying to loosen your fingers a bit, though, especially in those last few images you uploaded.

Keep up the awesome work and keep posting! it was awesome meeting you in Austin :)

WillSchnevel --- school so far is awesome as well as my teachers. its funny how when I don't have much free time I'm much more productive, and when I have nothing to do I just sit around. I started a seperate sketchbook that I entended as a "loose book" which I would sketch just for fun to take a break from the color stuff. however I found when I just through in a little pencil structure it helped imensely. (btw vancouver has a store that sells bud! dood!)

I enjoy "your ink crap" very much - you sure got some skills there. I do it a lot myself (check it out  ), so its nice to see what others do! Yours look really fine. The last one is very nice! The right shoulder on the beast is a little too low tho - same mistake i would do :confident, but giving you the same advice i got - mind the anatomy a little more and this stuff will be a real killer!

flex mathews --- hey thanks, I haven't seen that guys stuff before, I really like pro ink werk so cool!
jca --- lol awesome thanks
mentler --- thanks alot you bonehead!
farvus --- im too lazy to render the whole thing, quick is better when you don't have alot of time also
hurricane --- thats the nice thing about practising stait up in pen with no pencil is you have to commit to your lines
fellah --- thanks, I'll have some more ink garbage sometime soon, I've got alot of lab doodles lying around, I'll try to do a piece though when I get some down time

here the textures my friend so kindly painted for me. hopefully I'll get a chance to add a spec and maybe a bump map but I can't stray from trying to get my anim to a decent level. you can check out his site here, maybe he'll update it soon who knows?

Your sculptures and modelling & texturing are great!

I think some of your sketchings are inconsistent however, ranging from good to average, your human anatomy needs some work, I'd definitely recommend getting a book on the subject - I'm impartial to Loomis. The proportions need to be taken into account in a lo fo cases.

JackalAnubis
August 26th, 2005, 03:07 PM
magicman --- thanks dude, yes yes my proportions are usually wacky as is my anatom, I try to fake it the best I can! hahaah. but serisouly I've got a digital copy of the loomis books, I'm hoping to get back to some studies when I get the time, particularly hands ug

anyways I finished school and was hoping to do this cow buisness, but I'm juggling too much stuff right now, and a weekend of chico drunkening beckons, so here's some quick sketches I did:

LightBringer: This Creature is a nocturnal ambush hunter. It's habitat is the desert rim. It buries itself in the sand during the day, and hunts at night. The LightBringer is blind. It senses it's prey of small rodents and lizards through heat (since the desert becomes ironicaly cold at night) and vibrations in the sand. The Lightbringer has an organ at the base of it's curled abdomen which it uses to create a blinding "flashbang" effect to stun its prey, giving it time to move in for the kill.

Just don't stop updating!

Great sketches, Jackal! The animation is awesome, bro! You should definately land a job with that one! How long have you been working with computer animation? I'm so envious! I wanna know how to do it!!! :} How tough was it to learn? Maybe I'll get down on some classes. Very cool and funny. I just wanted to compliment you on all the hard work! I hope things go well for you as you leave Uni.

dCepT --- thanks dude, I tried to keep it interesting with diff stuff
ZebzFree --- that animation took me about 6 months to do, and yes it was hard, it's a lot of work, and actually things are looking up...
maxetormer --- thanks dude, and yes anatomy is something I need to work on

So here's some stuff. the first couple sketches are concept pics for a set design for a freelance project. I'm posting them now cuz the company just had their meeting with sony and looks like they are going to give them the liscence for the game, possibly even for jeopardy and wheel of fortune cuz they loved the demo so much.

some other sketches I've been doing the past couple days now that I've had some down time...which won't last very long cuz I got a job at blue sky studios as an animator over in ny, they're flying me out this saturday!

the first one is the best on this page!:) the others look like doodles you do in math class... :| : fast, messy, with no structure... It is just an ilusion of working...
you should spend more time and much more attention to every sketch! You'll see the results come with more strugleing!
