During some research and experimentation about the behavior of Super sculpey I discovered that you can harden it with a blow dryer. Here's what I want to do. I'd like to start a sculpture with a section per section approach. In other words, I'd like to model a section bake it with a hair dryer and start another section to avoid damaging the previously detailed area by handling it. My question is: Is this a common working method? does it sound like a good idea? What do you guys think?

yeah i already knew that.. instead of baking it for 20 mins use a heat gun (prob can buy at a warehouse or watever) But u have to keep it moving.. im guessing heat gun is faster

I'd be curious to hear how this works for ya man. Give 'er a go, and let us know. I always feel leary when baking in the oven simply because of the dangers of burning. (Since I don't usually paint my sculpts....burning is a terrible thing) I have many sculpts that actually aren't baked because of this reason. I think as long as you are sure that it bakes it all the way through...go for it. If it's not baked through and the "core" is still a bit soft....it'll crack eventually. Good luck, as we ALL are learning, and it's great to help each other out. If it works out...let me know.....I may try it myself. :chug:

the sculptors on www.goregoregore.com say that they prefer not to bake in layers because you almost always end up needing to change proportions near the end of the sculpt. This is something that I have found to be true on my last two sculptures. Its hard to see the figure acurately before you completely build it up. On the other hand, many people work in layers and are quite excited about it. I also got a few bad cracks in my last sculpt, I imagine because the oven didnt bake it all the way through, so layers may be the best way to go.

I was actually thinking of baking sections with a heat gun, while other sections are covered by a moist cloth. But I'm thinking of switching to chavant clay which is easier to smooth and shape than sculpey.
