Hi,
I'm Ryan and I like to draw. Go figure. Been feeling a more driven to produce lately and thought I'd start a thread showing recent stuff.
I'm learning the digital stuff, but I still feel most comfortable with just a pencil, so there may be a bit of both.
Crits and comments are definitely welcome.
Anyway, here is some work from this last week or so.
Thanks.

A great start to a potentially great sketchbook.

Thanks Enydimon, that's the plan anyway.
New stuff. So a bit of progresson the EOW this week, The Blasted Heath.
And then here is another landscape that I started.

Thanks, it really does make it easier. I took Marko Djurdjevic's Comic Book Covers Class on CA here, and it really opened my eyes up to some of the possibilities. That said, I still have to a lot to learn.

So far very great.
On the EOW, right now your sketch is coming of stronger than the colored one, so im guessing you're not done yet :).
Your sketches are quite well

Awesome pencil strokes, as for digital, training with studies and tutorials will do.
Im looking forward to seeing more.

Wow, thanks everyone.
Marko- I'm honored that you would come by to look at my work. Thank you. I learned a great deal in your class last month (in both technique and approach), and I am constantly going back to my notes. Characters are where my heart really is, and there are definitely more of these to come.
Incinerated- Here is the final for EOW#123 the Blasted Heath. I might still agree with your statement, but I did get the mood I was after. I reached a point where I wasn't really improving the piece any longer. I took a break and came back a bit fresher to get it done.
Time to move on to something new and figure out how to fix these mistakes.

Last month I finished some comic book submissions. These are from the sample script that Dark Horse Comics has available on their website.

Couple new drawings.
The first one with the angel & demon popped into my head last week, but I've been doing variations on this piece for a while now. I intend to crop this to be a slim vertical composition, but I can never help myself drawing outside of the lines, so here is the whole drawing.
The second is a piece that i intended to do back in school, but never got to it. There was an article about a mummified archer found near Stonehenge (I think... it was about 5 years ago). Anyway I found my old sketch for it while going through some old stuff and wanted to complete it.
Both of these I hope to practice my digital painting with.
Lastly, since I am trying out the whole concept art thing, I tried to do some character variations. I was happy with them at the time (earlier today) but I think I am already disappointed with them (they still need some value laid in at least).
Thanks for stopping by.

Great tonking stinker these are some good drawings! I like the angel slaying the orc thing. Only problem is that the poses aren't really cooperating with the narrative, so it takes a few sec to see that the winged dude is stabbing the other guy through the chest:P

This is really cool stuff Ryan!
It's a shame you didn't meet the deadline for last week's COW. You'll have to post the finished piece up on here when you get a chance.

thanks everyone for the kind words. i am working to bring up the level of my digital pieces and hope to have more to show soon.
in the mean time, here are two of the recent CHOWs.
the first was my original take on Cu Chulainn.
the second is The Morrigan which i did not finish in time.
There was some excellent work in both of these CHOWs. one piece in particular (by dwinbotp, i only got to see the sketch. hope he found time to finish it) inspired me to do each piece so that they could be laid side by side and make a joined image. anyway, now that The Morrigan is done, i have to make a new Cu Chulainn.
here's to it not taking as long.

The Cityscape in the comic is crazy. Actually all of it is, and your scenery with a pencil. Call me Jealous.

Wow, as everyone else here has said, your pencils are amazing and inspiring! And to get a comment by Marko, talk about icing on the cake. Totally dig the comic book submission and would love to hear any feedback you get from Dark Horse. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

thanks guys.
Kaileighblue- to be honest that cityscape drove me kinda crazy with all the perspective. i did several versions before i finally got it right, had to change my approach to put down what i had in my head. just have to keep trying until you get it.
browntear- you know, i sent the submission in and never actually heard back. second submission i've sent them, granted the first one wasn't great. i did learn a lot getting this one done at least. maybe next time.
not the usual for today, but i'm a part of Team Messzi Scruffz for Team CHOW 3. did a bit of a banner for it just messing around and having fun with it.

Little Christmas Gift for my girlfriend. She recently started learning to play the ukulele and somewhere along the line we were talking about a pirate flag that had two crossed uke's instead of swords or bones. It was supposed to be a bumper sticker for her car, but it sorta became a poster instead... seriously. it's about 16 inches tall.
Personally, I really enjoy doing these strict B&W pieces. For some reason, there is almost no sense of attachment to them, so it really flows nicely.

ok, it's been a little while since i posted.
let's see, i've got a drawing that i did earlier this year.
and i am trying to do studies in the morning like mr.delicious and the crimson daggers (his drive and determination is really inspiring). the first was from a parade magazine picture of sigourney weaver for avatar. then a study from a tree book i have, and a study of a howard pyle painting. the proportions on all these are horribly off, but i am trying to focus on color and getting more comfortable with digital technique, so i'm trying to let that go. not sure if i'm done with these or not.
lastly there's a painting that i have been working on for a while. did the drawing for it a LONG time ago, and have always wanted to paint it. think my skill level with the digital stuff is finally starting to improve some, so i'm giving it a serious shot. not done yet but i am at least happy with how it is going. this is about the third time i have redone all the trees in the back though...
trying to get the angel drawing cropped so i can start painting it soon too. and i'm working on my anatomy again, so maybe i'll get those scanned and post those too soon.
goat27
February 4th, 2010, 11:55 PM
alright, here are those anatomy studies. really got going on the third one with the arms. it's been a while so it was pretty nice to do this again. i feel like i'm getting alot more out of it than i did in the past.

The pencils are looking great!
Keep going at it with the digitals and I'm sure you'll get there soon.
I like the last one with the barbarian guy, but it seems the foreground and the background are reallly separate at the moment. Maybe carry in some of that fog to the foreground?

your pencil drawings look great and I really like the painting of the guy on the horse. Your paintings are looking a little too dark, perhaps cut back on using so much black? just a thought.
keep up the good work!

February 6th, 2010, 09:15 PM
kim_bot- i see what you are saying. i accidentally found a variation of the background when i was messing around with levels and stuff. i need to go back and see if it will work out or not, but i haven't really gotten there yet. but the fog is an interesting idea too.
theunknownsketcher- wow, thanks alot.
numlaut- heh, you know, i have a friend that is always telling me to use more black. i have a tendency to use a very muted palette. not enough color or value really. guess i have been reacting to that.
anyway, another day or two of work. the painting is really coming along now. i went back to the original trees, not because they are better really, but because there is less to paint over in the future.
and here's a drawing i did last night while watching highlander reruns (excellent). sorta the direction i was going with my team chow piece, but our team never really got going and in the end, we had to bow out. this isn't quite done either, he'll be holding a razor in the same hand with the bottle, and there will be cuts and blood all over his other arm.

You're linework is superb. Now you just need to get a good grasp at painting and you will really rock. The main thing I noticed you don't do when working with colors is letting them influence each other. This is very important for unifying the whole picture as in reality objects reflect light and with it color, which in turn mixes with the colors of the objects it's reflected onto. I hope I'm making sense. Keep up the great work. I can't wait to see more of your pencil drawings.

hi,
fantasyartist- yeah i know exactly what you are talking about. color is something i've had problems with for a while. i'm working to be more bold with my use of it. right now i think this piece (the final, below) does what i wanted it to, even if it doesn't seem very ambitious. stay tuned for the next one, i finally figured out how i want to paint the "angel stabbing the demon" drawing from earlier, and i'm excited about it.
it's been a while since i posted. i've had a LOT of computer problems and hand pain going on. neither one is particularly resolved, but at least the computer was working well enough to finally wrap this piece up.
i'm happy with it for the moment. that'll probably only last a few days though.
much thanks to my buddy jason at american greetings in cleveland for all the help and encouragement he gave me on this one.

finally going back into that old cuchulain CHOW from last year (page 1 maybe?). man, i had no idea how under worked that image was. it's amazing what a few saturation layers can do for you.
i'm painting over the guy getting attacked, almost definitely (see the sketch). not sure how i feel about the main guys hair yet.

your pencil sketches are awsome man. Dont think your digital does them justice you should try some master studies and still lifes think they would really help you with color.
all the best

yeah, i know i need more work on the digital, and with color. i'm working to get more comfortable with it all.
a bit more progress on the old chow. still more to go but at least some things are falling into place.
and a doodle i was working on the other night instead of sleeping. i know the eyes are off. i was just more interested in playing with the light, color and form.

The mossy rocks in this one (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=899280&stc=1&d=1265508345)... So delicious!! Great work on that piece. Although, have to say, I'm not a fan of the red overlay in the final, and the background feels rather separated from the rest, but still a fine piece.
Like your pencils a lot.

i like that last piece of the guy stabbing the other guy in the neck, but the figure with the spear is kinda floating maybe if u put a shadow in the grass it can look more grounded and also there is grass that covers the front foot it has a straight edge kinda looks out of place maybe u dont need to cover that foot
