I know this is probably going to sound a little dumb, but...

What makes charcoal paper different than paper that's in my sketch pad? I mean like, why would I use charcoal paper over regular paper if I were to draw using vine charcoal?

usually some sort of texture that holds the charcoal. or color to make your drawings purddy.

You get the thicker & rougher characoal paper for it's ability to build up texture and the ability to take abuse from long drawings. You can work on the same surface over and over again on characoal paper while newsprint or other paper might start to fall apart.

Does the "tooth" thing apply to charcoal like it does to pastels?

i prefer to use deeper toothed paper for harder charcoal and more smooth, shallow paper for softer charcoal, but that's just me and i'm a weirdo.

if you really want a relevant tip, i suggest going to a fabric store and asking for a roll of craft paper... it's brown paper, basically, and it comes in rolls that are about a meter across and really long... it's good stuff. and free if you ask the workers for some, if they use it for rolling their silk in.

oh, why do i follow my girlfriend to the fabric store? why? why do i know all this? why?

oh, right... the one with the box is the boss....
