Hi my name is Markus! I'm a graphic design student in my final term and I'm trying to become a concept artist!

At the moment I'm working on my final project at university together with the german game developer Deck13 Interactive on their new and not yet announced multiplatform title. My first major title, yay! :steph:

Fell free to comment, critique or ask questions! Thanks for viewing :donk:

some minor adjustments and a view from the back.

Now I have to work on her face >.< I can life with her clothing like that.

This should become Amaterasus brother Susanoo.

A greedy guy, easy to influence, always envious of Amaterasu and with a huge lust for power.

I like how alot of your stuff is on feudal japan.
But I want to see more of the practice stuff, your warmups and quick sketches. See where your coming from under all that talent, so then I can rub some of that talent on me and what not, take a talent shower, with talent soap, you know, with talent.

And nice website =)

I tend to copy layers once in a while so normally I have some to share if you are interested.

Here is the main pose I started with. Maybe I just want to see the girls naked before they get their clothes later on ;D
Most of the time I adjust the pose during further progress because they are not flawless :o need to study !

At the moment I'm working on my very first matte painting! Will probably keep me up all night so I try to update it once every few hours of progress :>

Onisan
October 30th, 2009, 10:44 PM
The first two layers finished. I will animate it afterwards so I need some more stuff in the forground, any feedback so far ? :)

This one here is a room full of mirrors. Amaterasu sits in her "golden cage" in the middle and reflects her light on the mirrors. They are aimed at one special mirror above, one of the japanese crown insignias yata no kagami.
It is spinning on top to reach the light at all incoming angles creating a spherical shape like the actual sun.

This is how I would imagine her spreading the sun around the world :D

Thanks SekuDanba I think I'll try to finish Tsukiyomi because I kinda like it too :D

Here is a new piece of Amaterasu, I think I can start to work on her final image if I get a good pose. I also recorded my sketching this time for the people who asked for earlier stages etc.

Sketch record! (http://www.vimeo.com/7402018)

Maybe I will do this more often now, but I feel kinda watched when it records... hopefully I get used to it because I felt nervous sketching hehe

Thanks greyskill, I'll definitely be back at your sketchbook so keep the updates coming ;D

The current piece I'm working on will be my first attempt on a comic genre. Since I'll attend the Made Symposium in Berlin, I thought it would be a good idea to add some of those to my little portfolio :D Since this is pretty difficult for me and I don't have a lot of comic experience, I appreciate every feedback!

Damn there is one even meaner thing than being woken up by a loud alarm clock... having a cramp in the leg before you are even awake... crazy start for the day. Well I did not manage to do a lot yesterday but here is a WIP of a weapon design I call "hunger". There are blades at the handle and they cut open the hand of its wielder. Because of the blood smeared blade it is possible to draw it quicker from it's scabbard. Got the idea from the animes Katanagatari.
Well I'm going home now to draw, work is over maybe I'll udate again later. Sry for all the text I feel chatty today ;;D

Your figure drawings are extremely impressive - nicely drawn and designed. As for critiques, I think you can benefit from working on your lighting more. You're doing a lot of value studies which is great (and you improved a lot from the first page in that regard), but I think you can benefit from focusing a bit more on lighting. Keep at it!

mike butkus thanks for looking, I'm honored ;D

Ok since my sketchbook started people often asked me about my pencil sketches and I .. well... didn't have any because I was so stuck at my wacom. The last few weeks I "tried" to become friends with my pencil again. As a nice side effect I discovered, that there is a whole awesome world outside of my little box !!! Wel... nevertheless here are some pictures. A lot from live, a little from reference and a bit imagination. For example the first sketches for my marvel vs capcom piece started as thumbnails in my book.

fantasyartist Thank you, Heads/Skulls are definitely on my list of thngs I have to improve sooner or later :)

Here is another update. As I'm almost finished with the rendering I decided to start with colour and paint finish the rendering after all the colour is applied. For my colour theme I will do a lot of red/blue contrast between Ryus Hadouken and Akumas Dark Hadou. I noticed that Ironman is also mostly red with blue energy from his engines and the power source on his chest. The only colour left from Ironman is yellow which is also on wolverines clothes so they kind of surround Ryu and Akuma. It sounds reasonable but maybe I'm just dead tired... good night! :)

Ok here is the finished piece and I have to move on to the next one. I decided to da a major crop because the left side of the picture was very empy and since it should be an action shot I wanted to keep most of the calm parts of my economy out of the picture. Please feel free to correct me and give my feedback on which one you liked more. ( I mean the work in progress and the finished, the second piece beneath is just a closeup).

Ok here is the cropped version and a close up shot... I noticed after I was finished with ironman that I probably was zoomed in too much :D

Woow. First thanks for checking out my sketchbook and for all the great advice, second. This is just amazing, truly amazing. I love everything, the silhouttes are really nice an I love how some of the images you post have like a start and finish procress kind of thing and at the end, everything looks amazing. The backgrounds/landscape are really nice and the original character are awesome, so are the fan-arts. Keep up the amazing work and I would like to see more of you.

fantastic stuff, thank you for stopping by my sketchbook. It really is a pleasure looking at your renders, Your environments are really are great, but still you need to get more structures in them tho, so far its all been organic nature scenes.

Mabelma Thanks man I hope you got something out of it. I'll check out your other stuff and give you some more advice if you think it was helpful.

Incinerated Thank you, that has to be Albert Bierstadts fault, he focused heavily on nature. Maybe I'll do some Sparth studies too, maybe you like them :D

iven Dankschööön !

Got some awesome and pretty huge books this weekend, Renoir, Degas, Tizian and a collection of the Louvre paintings. Definitely looking forward to doing some studies out of there soon.

Really liking everything so far, keep it up.

Looks like you do most of your rendering with a hard round brush and then some textured brushes for your landscapes, would I be correct in my assessment?

Onisan
August 6th, 2010, 11:11 AM
Slade_Templar Thanks man, you are correct. I like working with a hard round standard brush for detailed rendering most of the time but I'm starting to switch between hard and soft or rather trying to do it a little more often. Textures brushes for quick pieces where I need information and detail fast.

thanks guys, oh man I really did not post anything for quite a while!

Here is some stuff I've done more or less 'recently'. Some random commissioned stuff and some doodles. I'm currently working as a concept artist for my first multiplatform title and hopefully I'll be able to flood the sketchbook with the huge amount of new pictures I've already created at some point!

Thank you! It's different from picture to picture. The rough 3D perspective foundation of some pictures was done by someone else, the rest was mostly done by me. Mixing in photo reference, painting, adjustments, light setting etc.
