I figured I might as well get this up. I'll update every once in a while. Most of these're going to be low-grade sketches at first. Just some basic stuff like weapon poses and so on and so forth.

I have to admire people who can draw weapons and other machinery so well. The man's feet and legs seem large compared to the rest of him.

Great details on this sketch!
I have to second Kaileighblue on that the weapons look very nice.
Perspective seems a bit off on the lady's rifle though. It looks as if the scope is turned a bit too much to the left! Also, something is bothering me about the woman's head. It seems a little big for her body I think.
Good work though! keep it up. :)

More fun. And thanks, I like my gun porn plenty! Mind you, that picture was an earlier concept piece. I've modified the characters a bit, and can also currently name everything they're carrying. These two pics're the same guy, in case it wasn't obvious.

The first one's a more finalized design. He's packing an AK-104 with a suppressor, GP-30 underslung grenade launcher, and a Crane stock. Also pictured are a Walther PPS with a suppressor and unseen are a Springfield 1911 clone and an Ostblock ballistic knife. Yes, he's ridiculously well-armed. The second one's more of a study/concept piece for operating a Mosin Nagant.

Some fun from something I'm working on as well. This one was doodled from reference, in this case an ODA team practicing breaching with Filipinos.

you seem to know a lot about weapons that I don't not that that's an achievement but

You've definitely got machine/armor design down, the only thing I can suggest is technical points: bold--not scratchy--line, proper weight to characters, construction, etc.
Let's seem some rendered sketches :D

What, can I say? I'm a gun-nut. I'll eventually get around to giving these designs a polish, but critiques are desired. And as a random bit of boasting, I don't do lines with rulers. All of my stuff's free-handed. More forthcoming later, but here're some poses for your use if you so wish.

No, I just happen to like the smell of burning gunpowder. Duh.

More fun on the mercenary concepts, and critiques are always welcome. Just remember that it's my style...:P

Mmmm, your proportions and anatomy is really good, and I like the detail. Your faces need work though. They're anatomically correct for sure, but their have very little personality and the women all look very similar.

That considered, I still think these are really good.

Falchion
December 18th, 2009, 09:24 PM
*Chuckles sheepishly* Yeah, it's a failing of mine. Part of said homogeneity is because really, what is beauty? It's the commonly accepted norm between any number of faces. The closest the mean of facial appearances is thus considered "beauty". Rant aside, I'm working on it. And the male merc's intentionally a non-personality. Comes from his backstory of being raised from birth to be a killer.

It could be just me, but your latest picture--how the gun is held, seems weird to me. I own some rifles, and depending on the rifle, it can be heavy! Generally I think, if though a bit generic or cliche could be help like the image on reply numba 18 is. Though it could be just me. ( I'm not a very strong little girl-- 'specially when it comes to pumping the damn thing :P) I'm not an expert on guns, just know the basic ways of holding the gun lol.

For the faces, could could look up different pictures of woman with different facial structures. :).
Sorry if I didn't help.

Falchion
January 4th, 2010, 12:18 PM
The armor's got some strength-amplifying circuitry, duh...:upset::rolleyes::P

Aside from that, yeah, I'm getting around to actually getting some of the facial work I've been doing lately up. Not exactly unique faces, but when compiled, I'd hope they look sufficiently different. I should be able to have those up by the end of the week.

Your anatomy seems pretty solid, and your costumes are pretty neat. However, I think some of your guns seem a little oversized (for example in reply #18). Yeeaaah yeeeah, they're future guns and they have strength-enhancing armour, but big guns is quickly becoming an overused cliché. You can create a much more believable universe if it's grounded in reality.
Nevertheless, I think you're on a great track here. Keep it up :)

Although in those three pages the anatomy isn't correct all the time, it's very good. Especially the last page. The gunship looks very very good! Although the actual 'guns' are a bit wonky in their forshortening.

Anyway, good lookin' sketchbook. Keep it up! :)

Hi Falchion! thanks for stopping by my SB!
Pretty good start to your SB man.
Your knowledge of weapons will serve you well in weapon concepts.
Just don't forget to push it to the next level whenever you feel you are stagnating.
But so far so good..and I like the piece you did below the best..love her pose!

Thanks for the lovely sketchbook comment!

Seeing your work instantly reminded me of this site - http://www.photo-reference-for-comic-artists.com/
Its full of models posing with guns and stuff from all kinds of angles that you can study for ideas or anatomical reference, although I think you need to pay a small membership fee to view all the photos.
However, since it looks like your cup of tea, maybe its worth considering :)

Keep posting! (And maybe try and colour a character/something from life? :D)

Falchion
July 21st, 2010, 06:25 PM
I would use the site, but the figures they offer are posed unrealistically. When it comes to weaponry and Blood Money Boogie, I tend to prefer a more realistic approach to the poses. No diving, no dual-wielding, no nonsense.

That being said, here's some reference I finally cleaned up. Walking tank design! Mercenary with a carbine (Soon to be ruined with colors)! Psychopathic French Resistance sniper (Also to be ruined with colors)!

Man, that's a really geek quote..

Just one thing: Watch the size of your feet and heads, sometimes the feet look too big or the head looks too small. And try to push your values more, get darker darks and the whole range within.

By the way, Was a Lee Enfield what I saw with the girl? :)

Yeah, well, I'm a geeky sort of guy. ;)

Workin' on the values thing, but you can blame the feet and heads thing on a diet of BattleTech and late '90s and early '00 comic art. I generally don't wind up doing with more realistic works, but it creeps in like bad stylization.

And yes. It's a Franken SMLE.

Got some other stuff quietly brewing in the background that I'll get around to pimping out here.

my immediate reaction here would be to suggest working on your line quality a bit more and trying to use confident single strokes rather than going over the same line again. Having said that, the lines are looking much better in this most recent post. ill be back soon!

for some reason, the texture of your paper in your sketches is super distracting to me. i don't know-- using that kind of paper texture for graphite takes away from clean lines and makes everything look rough. 8( from what i can see though, i do like your sense of design and proportion. not really digging the digital though and it's mostly cause of the colour comp. those trees are on fucking fire dude. xD the green garage door's not sitting too well for me either, and neither is the yellow green drab mech-- maybe when it's more complete i'll be feeling it, but i just don't see things tying together. ]; maybe if the rest of it had like that sickly feeling yellow/green light going on it'd work?

Yeah, I know, it's a Havoc. They're cheap and easily maintained, thus well-suited for a profit-minded mercenary unit. :P

I figure this is as good a place as any to pimp out the story.

Blood Money Boogie is my take on a distillation of heroic bloodshed movies and just about every action trope in the book The storyline follows a unit of ragtag mercenaries, specifically two in the unit, as they kill and maim their way through the world for a paycheck. In this case, the first story arc takes place in Somalia.

Coincidentally, I should note the difference between mercenary and PMC. A PMC is/are personnel you hire as well-armed security. A mercenary (unit) is/are personnel you hire because you want someone/some people dead or out of the way. There's a fine line, but it's there.

But enough of the bollocks. Sketches coming up in a few hours!

GI Joe? Not exactly. I'm a gun and gear nut, and quite honestly, I'm fascinated by modern forms of violence. It's wonderful to see man's inhumanity to man.

In the interim while I get some public-consumption pages scanned from my sketchbook, have some preliminary cover and character work for the first arc of the comic!

Nice stuff, and a helpful redline over in the critique section for khajit. From a quick look-through I'd say most of your figures are stiff and highly posed. Nothing wrong with highly posed, of course, but I'd still like to see them look a little looser. I'd suggest doing a 100 gestures project. I got most of the way through one by using posemaniac's timer feature. I had it show me a new figure every minute and did 10 a day. I saw pretty quick improvement, but you can always draw whoever's sitting around you, etc.

Good progress here mate. The build up from the first page to here has shown good improvement. Keep working on your strengths, it seems you have a strong sense of imagination with weapons and character concepts relating to it.

everytime I look in here I get the urgend again to draw weapons. Like I told before, but I never did T.T. Maybe you should dish out some art really fast with just a main focus you like to observe, improve. Seeing the portrait I would say like, do fast 20 or 30 portraits and concentrate on getting the value in a few strokes right. Could be helpfull maybe =).

You are doing some good work, man! This last one I think you could check out the planes of the head, it's something I have some major problems with also, it's just super helpful to have in mind when you are doing the rough setup on your faces. Also you could play around with saving the greatest contrast in value to where you want your viewer to look the most. Like having the darkest dark and lightest light around the eyes and nose. It's hard to get right but I try to think how I can show the viewer what I want them to look at the closest using contrast and detail etc.
Anywhoooooo Keep up your good work man! Cheers!

Holy moly, you're an updating machine, so many great sketchbook pieces. Your traditional work seems to be at a greater level than your digital work, don't disregard it when you transfer to digital, I recommended scanning in your pieces and painting them from there, it'll keep the fluidness and mood that your line work has that I think your digital work is missing.

Looks like you're practicing a lot, thats good. Try drawing from life more, it will inform your drawings and paintings from your head. I see you painted Bruce Willis and Jet Li....Ive always been told to avoid drawing from photographs because A) People can tell and they dont look all that nice, and B) You arent really helping yourself since the problems of creating a 3d object on a 2d surface are already solved for you....just food for thought, keep it up.

Yeah, I agree with what Sprogis7 said above about drawing from life. I'm starting to reap great benefits from doing still life and sketching people on the street. I would also recommend looking up the Villppu drawing manual. It's great as it teaches the core fundamentals in learning to see and draw the human figure with gesture and purpose. Alot of your figures look a little stiff, but there is improvement going on here. Thanks for dropping my my sketchbook.

Hey there, nice job. I like the volume of work you're putting out. The only way to get better is to keep drawing! More Chi Train Harder!.

I think what would be really beneficial for you is some life drawing. If there no classes around that you can take, then grab a sketchbook and go to a nearby, mall, cafe, park any place with a decent number of people. And get drawing! If you can't then find some internet references. The key thing is to draw the body from observation as much as possible. And try to find as many wacky angles and perspectives as you can.

Also, try and keep a seperate sketchbook, in which you do all ink drawings, or charcoal. Something thats not kind to erasing, and focus and making as few marks as possible, but capturing as much information as possible. Things like Ink will force you to make a good line, and get it in one stroke, as opposed to pencil, where you can make multiple marks for what could be one line. You'll find that as you get better at this, and study more. Not only will the work be more accurate, it'll just feel better overall.

But yes keep going. More Chi! Train Harder!

I would say that you look more into value and let the color for later, you can olways create a color layer on the top of the drawing and color the black and white image with it.
Good luck and have fun. :)

Cool beans, you seem to really like soldiers. One thing I'd say about your pencils is that they could use a little more contrast, maybe try and crack out a 6B and go nuts with some shadows, they can really help define forms.
Oh and don't be afraid to use one long line where you'd usually use more, it's way more satisfying.
Keep rockin those guns an armour, love 'em!

Those are some seriously crisp lines, I'm a little jealous. Your designs are looking better; proportions mostly are what have improved I think. Don't be afraid to push your digital skills. You seem to work in a very controlled fashion and I think it might be hindering you a bit. Do some greyscale studies from reference, they'll help. Push the contrast a bit, you'll start to feel more comfortable after a while.
