Today's and a bit of yesterday's doodling. For a personal assignment I'm trying to draw a cartoon-ish game character which I will work out further and then attempt to render in a more realistic way. I'm probably going for either 2 or 4.

Well, the scanner got cleaned.
It's so stupid and frustrating how something can look right on paper, but looks ridiculous when scanned.

It took a while unfortunately. Relationship, work, driving and I still had a few commissions to finish before I could fully focus on practise (I can't do personal stuff well if I still owe other people art).

It's not much but I went and refined the sketches a bit more than I initially intended. Especially the rhino 'dragon'.
Info on the rhino dragon: Too heavy to fly, so it's wings started to evolve into a defensive weapon. Not that it needed them since it's already a tank, but I figured it needed something that still slightly resembled wings.
Info on the "mech": Very quick sketch of a mech I've had in mind for a long time. I still lack the skill to draw her as I actually think she should look (it's a she by the way), so I stopped where I was and decided to try again later.
Everything else is just random doodling or practise.

Ahh, I'm so slow with my practises lately! I've been doing other things though. Not a day goes by that I don't draw. Here's what kept me busy before, and what I AM still busy with.

http://i50.tinypic.com/8vxda1.jpg
The lion character is not my own, it was an exchange type picture for BrennaRaven on DeviantArt. The second picture is more or less a tryout. I wanted to draw something cute in a somewhat cartoony style (it's no particular animal, more of a mix between red panda and lemur).

Some chimera sketches I did, because I couldn't decide on a pose. I'm probably going for the second though (where the goat is vomiting liquid fire by the way. I'm aware it looks awkard).
http://i46.tinypic.com/29f605u.jpg
And one based off of a bird I saw today when I came home from work. It was sitting perched on a branch, preening itself when the wind suddenly caught it's tail so it flung forward, struggling to hold on to the branch. It really cheered me up and as I got home I decided to speedpaint the scene. 15 minutes.

Here is today's work. I've been chatting with a commissioner today, she's developing a world of her own but she is more of a writer and in need of drawn references, so that's where I come in. Unfortunately the best reference she could give me were screenshots of creatures she designed in Spore, and my job basically was to draw these creatures in a somewhat realistic/believable fashion.
Starting off with the 'elephant' of her world. A full grown man would reach up to about the third spike coming from it's leg. It has sensory antennas for eyes, should anyone get confused.
http://i49.tinypic.com/14o6jrs.jpg
Second, her world's 'warthog', it digs up it's food with it's peculiar front legs.
http://i45.tinypic.com/2s6vy8w.jpg
And a swamp tree. My first ever serious attempt at sketching a tree as well so probably full of mistakes. I need to draw more plants.
http://i47.tinypic.com/scriuh.jpg
Oh, and another sketch commission like the ones a couple of posts back:

Not too happy with that last one, but I was completely uninspired.

trexmaster: I used various hadrosaurs as a reference so it could well have been ;).
ParanoiaArtist: I'm 19 myself and I've always enjoyed pokémon. It's what got me started on drawing and I will never forget about them little guys! Granted they got a little overboard with the amount of them and the series have got rather boring and repetitive, but the first series of pokémon still make me feel happy inside haha.

Hmm had a bit of a slow day today. I've done only two 'sketches', both took me longer than they should have (the first about two hours, the second to and a half). I couldn't seem to focus very well.
Again, neither of these two designs are mine. The first is a wind spirit from the game called Aion, I used a screen shot as a reference. The second is a 'fey' dragon designed by a writer who wanted me to try and depict it. The wing structure is supposed to be a mixture of bat and butterfly.
http://i50.tinypic.com/oqhvf4.jpg

I also discovered that a simple gradient could make the sketch look just a little more interesting.

There are western (European) and eastern (Asian) dragons, which led me to wondering what an American dragon would look like. And so, McDragon was born.

(actually I just wanted to draw a random fat dragon and found the idea of it being American fairly amusing)

Some studies of a hovercraft-animal, for last week's COW. Didn't get to making a finished piece, but the sketches and studies were still fun to do.

A bit of art therapy for today. I've been trying to capture Bryan Adams' "Sound the Bugle" through my art a few times before but never really managed to do so. Up until now I guess :). I'm aware that the paw underneath her head looks wonky, I attempted to fix it a bit.

Cool! found you at DA aswell. Heck Pokemon are awesome :P the anime is lame nowadays but I miss the good old gameboy days. I had dreams of becoming a Pokemon master....
Your lines are really strong, nice and clean. Would be cool to see some more colours from you, I think that's your weak point. Also more people. It's good to see some studies there aswell :)

Everything is coming along nicely. Keep at it! It's probably already been said but you should make sure to do continuing studies from real animals. That will give you the necessary mental library of form and function to create whatever you want from imagination and have it be convincing.
The other thing I can suggest is to really work on creating instantly readable silhouettes. It looks like your doing a pretty good job but give them a little more thought, especially in the initial sketch or pose phase and I think it will really help.

Quick CHEATER TRICK: duplicate your finished image, blur it and then erase this blurred layer where you want the focus to be. Ideally you should think of this bluriness of edges while you paint and do them the right way by blending shapes one into the other, but try to experiment like this for now.
Grab the composition video. It's the single most valuable thing guys at Massive Black did to this point :)
(I really should get sponsored for tooting their horn all the time:))

You have some really awesome animal drawings! I enjoyed the pokemon ones, I think it would be neat to see them in a realistic manner, live action movie anyone? You also have a really nice sense of structure, form, and animal anatomy so your work is very believable.
Do you mind if I ask how you did the scales on the Dragon in post #45? I've been trying to find better ways to render elements like that and am interested in how you went around doing it.
One thing I'd really like to see is some of your creatures rendered really realistically, I think they would look sick.
Anyways good work again and I hope to see more in the future!

Holy cow, I could just stare at your linework all day long...<3
Also, since you appear to be a "dino-enthusiast", I was curious if you heard about this...it turns out Triceratops and Torosaurus may actually be the same animal...
Are Torosaurus and Triceratops one and the same?
A rare horned dinosaur known as Torosaurus may not be a distinct species, after all, according to a presentation given Friday at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Bristol, England.
Researchers have long recognized similarities between Torosaurus and Triceratops, the main distinctions being that Torosaurus is larger and has an expanded frill at the rear of the skull. But John Scannella, a doctoral student at Montana University, and his advisor, John R. Horner, have found that specimens attributed to the two species actually form a developmental continuum rather than falling into discrete groups.
A Triceratops skeleton on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, for example, exhibits a number of skull traits reminiscent of Torosaurus, including thin parietal bones and elongated squamosal bones. In addition, microscope examinations of thin slices of bone from Triceratops and Torosaurus specimens reveal that individuals attributed to Torosaurus are more mature than any of the ones assigned to Triceratops.
Scannella and Horner therefore believe that the fossils that have been categorized as Torosaurus are just Triceratops individuals that reached mature adulthood before they died.
Rest of story... (http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=are-torosaurus-and-triceratops-one-2009-09-28)

fantastic creature designs! I found myself trying to figure out how those animals moved and you put some good thought into their anatomy. Although, some of them are loosely based off of current existing creatures, it does provide a good template to work with when creating a new creature from imagination. I haven't done this sort of thing in a while, but I think i'll look into to it.
btw, that dragon painting is nuts, every blade of grass illustrated, damn...

Oh this is a bit random, and I don't know if you've already seen this, but I was watching this vid-clip and thought how it would make for a good gestural/postural reference library for how dogs (and similar animals) move and look doing random stuff like riding their bicycles. I thought you might find it useful!:

Thanks for the feedback on my character!
Dig your work man. You definitely have a thing for mythical creatures. You like to do it, and that's why you're good at it. Keep them coming.
In post 61, you have an image of a "wolfman" of sorts (red haired one). I am particularly fond of this one. I like what you've done here but I think there are some parts you could rework. For instance, the shadows by his chest and crotch, and under his left arm are too dark (pitch black). It'd be nice to see just a smidge of form within that shadow area. And when I say smidge, I really mean just a tiny bit, just to show some more anatomy and to "pop" the figure more.
Also, you could also lighten up certain key points on his head, hand and knee to make it seem like they are sticking out more. I would also slightly darken his snout a bit more, to make it seem like his head is tilted more so than it is at the moment.
Rock on man!

A little info on them; the first two are part of a school project where I'm drawing 30 existing heroes from the game "Heroes of Newerth" after which I'll design 20 of my own.
The two sketches are part of a personal project of a 100 sketch commissions.
The (all slightly rushed) character art and environment were school assignments.

Creature update! The first design (the quadrupedal avian, basically a bird species that evolved backwards) has been sold over on DeviantArt, the other three are being auctioned off as we speak (over here (http://dragoness77.deviantart.com/art/Auction-Adoptables-195408424)) :). A thought had occurred to me as I was looking through your sketchbook. Through my relatively young experience on deviant art, as well as some run-ins in the critique center, I've begun to think of animal-oriented (animals, dragons, critters, etc.) art in less-than-flattering light. There's just so much crap out there that the stereotype of what goes on in the creation of this art and the fan base of really bad artists just continues to grow and grow. The sea of artists who choose to draw and paint animals as a main subject matter is just not a pretty one.
You really validate a lot of your work with understanding and knowledge of what you're drawing. Your structures are solid and the form of your creatures really shines in (what looks to be) a relatively timely fashion.
I find myself more interested in how you sketch. But I find really limited information on it in your sketches. Do you construct your creatures in the sense that you feel you HAVE to build a skeleton, or are you able to mentally figure these things out?
It's awesome that you're working on people more now. I'm not sure how much experience you have in the subject, but your understanding of general forms and structures seems to be carrying over nicely into your human-related work.
Keep up the good work and keep posting, please.

HAJiME: Hey, thanks! :)
Nallen: Thank you very much!
Quigleyer: As much as I'm actually guilty of this myself, I will have to agree with you regarding artists who mainly draw animals. On DeviantArt especially it's a fad that's growing just as big if not already bigger than manga, but at least there is a select group that does keep themselves busy with functional design and I try to be part of that.
I guess you've seen my sketching method in that livestream session I held the other day; when it comes to creatures, I don't really draw a base of what I'm going to do anymore. It's all here in my head, both the proportions as well as most of the musculature from practically any angle. There are some "blurry" areas that I really need to work on still, but for the most part I can manage without drawing any kind of underlying structure first.
With people however I can't do that yet. I still need to draw a basic skeleton and even then I still have trouble with the proportions and placement of the muscles, although it's getting better :).
----
I'm mostly bound to either projects or commissions right now and I feel kind of guilty working on anything else. Thankfully there are some people who have apparently "discovered" my ability to draw humans and I've got a couple of human(oids) on my commission list :). Looking forward to working on them as I really need to work on my human drawing skills!
Oh, as well as my painting skills, which is why I'm doing speedpaint commissions as well;

I love how you colored the metal, that is something that take me a few attempts to do xDDDDD. Though one thing I have seen when you draw people is their arms look a little awkward. The Valkyrie's hand on the spear looks unnatural to me, if I was to change anything Id make her grip look more powerful, the wrist remaining strait and fist confidently clenching the spear. Try doing silhouettes or contour poses of humans that specifically conveys an emotion without using the face. Your coloring and anatomy is great! Id love to see that added with confident and expressive poses!

Hey there Shia :). Thanks for the comment and crits! I've had other people comment on the arm and I can see how odd it looks now. I'd stared myself blind on this one. I'm not sure if it'll still be finished since the project has been changed a little, but we'll see where it goes; I might redo it as a personal project at some point in time.

I've been swamped with school work lately (very little art involved sadly) so I haven't been able to work on much. I did manage to get at least a half-decent speedpainting done (the blue creature) and a school assignment (the bull). The assignment was to pick one of our school's teachers and turning him into a game "boss" using their characteristics. I picked a supposed "tough" guy with an afro, who is is harsh in his critique but his advise is generally golden. That should, hopefully, explain my design choices. The speedpainting was done in roughly 30-40 minutes just to relax in between homework. That helped a lot! I need to learn to loosen up anyway :).

Really nice stuff! Your anatomy is really active and dynamic in most cases, reminds me a little of Claire Wendling. If I had any recommendations, it would be a little more life painting and let it infect your illustrations a little- sometimes you have very nice light, but other times it feels as if you are coming to conclusions without much knowledge of how light plays on the materials- but overall, very nice stuff! Thank you for stopping by my sketchbook as well :)
Good luck!

wow, great updates! havent been here in a while, i missed alot! but evrything is looking really nice! since you mentioned how you get caught up in details, i thought id just say that zooming out alot can help with that alot. i do it constantly when im working, just to make sure certain elements aren't overpowering others, and that the image as a whole has a definitive focal element, clearly defined by its level of detail or sharpness of contrast. just something ive picked up, but you probably know this already, just put it to use! haha. great work though man!

Justin: Thanks so much for dropping by! I had never heard of Wendling before, her works are quite lovely. You're absolutely right about that lighting, I need to work on that pretty badly. I'll be doing real life studies whenever I can in the coming weeks.
NickyBeats: Actually I work very zoomed out most of the time, heh! The problem is when I do start zooming in and refining certain areas, I don't really know when to stop, like when it's "enough". Even if the zoomed out picture does look okay, I never know which rough edges to leave alone and which ones to polish. Thanks for stopping by!
berniebakari: Thank you!

Our team decided on a different style/mood for the game concept, so I decided to start over from scratch. Did a few (admittedly rather messy) thumbnails and eventually came up with the final design.

Oh, almost forgot this one. I've been practicing humans lately and I thought I'd see what I could do, so I went and started sketching without reference. Finally then some scans, more gesture practice and lastly a concept page of a creature design for school. Or, well, we were given a creature to work with and told to implement it into a game somehow. It's a re-do of the thumbnails above, where I turned it into an enemy. I was told the concept wasn't strong enough so I decided to rethink the thing and realized that I could play with the living-dead design it originally has by turning it into a reincarnation/respawn site. Still not entirely sure which one I'm going with but I'm favoring #4 at the moment.

Redo of the Gatekeeper image. Hated the composition and was thankfully given permission to cheat into making it wider, though the overall size still had to be 1024x768. I was also allowed to remove the girl (thank god), replaced her with the tree and bird as I did want to have something in the foreground.

Nice stuff, it's a pleasure to browse through.
On the gatekeeper:
Maybe it would be a little more interesting if you could break the horizon line.
You could make the tree bigger, so it crosses it, for example.
The yould also be slightly more clouds I think. You could use them to fill the sky and to give a compositional line to the guardian.
Looking at you other anatomies (humans dragons or whatever), this skeleton looks a little rough and less detailed. The ribs do not actually describe a rib cage and the spine should have spikes on the back side, like the human spine too.
And a spine is not a flat band like this, it's many single bones.
You should also reconsider how exactly the bone structure is supposed to hang there. Does it just stand there or does it acutally hang on theses ropes ?
If it's the ropes, they should be more straight, since they hold the weight, instead of passing by the bones and then coming up again.
I hope that helps a bit.
Keep it up.

Medelo: Thank you!
shockowaffel: Hey, thanks! I wasn't planning on working on that pic anymore, but I can definitely see what you mean. I didn't think of him as actually hanging from those ropes, I imagined him as more of a "ghost" that you can see from this side, but not anymore once you passed into the other world. Thanks for the crits though, good points!

Sweron: Thanks a lot for the 5-star rating, appreciated :)!
Candra H: Heh, thanks! I'm not sure actually, I guess it's a combination of my working method and the brushes I use. I use a hard round brush with opacity and flow set to pen pressure, which makes for pretty smooth, soft strokes. I really couldn't tell you how much animal anatomy I've studied, lots and lots of hours, hundreds if not over a thousand, lol. I've got a reference folder with a section specifically for animals which in turn is divided into all the different families of animals (canine, feline, equine, bird, etc) and in each family-folder there have got to be 100 or so reference images complete with skeletons and muscle diagrams etc which I've all used for my studies. I'd recommend everyone to do this, it's really helpful. As for how long it took me to get to where I am now; hard to say. I started developing a particular interest for drawing when I was about 11 (because I noticed I was fairly good at it, at least better than my peers), but I didn't start getting "serious" about my improvement until I was 16-17 or so. I'm 21 now. I've always liked drawing though, even as a small kid :).
Narrenzauber: Well that's a big compliment, thank you!
-Jag: On it, heh!

So anyway after handing it in my teacher told me that while it was good it was missing a main characteristic. I wasn't entirely sure what he meant and I didn't know what to add, remove or change without making it too busy or too cliché. So I went with a banner and changed the overall layout to something more pleasant to look at. I'm hoping it's okay like this.

Some work for a school project (making a game prototype). The first group of thumbnails was to explore different possible relationships (father and daughter, a married couple and brother and sister) and different settings. I had a lot of freedom so I tried to go in several different directions. My team preferred the jungle setting but not the characters as much, so I tried to continue to explore forms. Was a little rusty there, but eventually got to the satyrs, which my group were very enthusiastic about.
The girl thumbnail was pretty much spot-on so I didn't change much about it in the more refined sketch, which is currently being used for outfit designs and color schemes (by a different teammate). My group wasn't entirely satisfied with the guy though so I had to draw a new sketch for him. Currently awaiting their approval and/or suggestions so I can refine him as well and move on to color mock-ups for the game (which will be a 2D side scroller). We're trying to achieve a somewhat unique style for the characters, or at least an unusual one.

Ooh, the male satyr isn't half bad either. :D No weapon?

He'll have a weapon eventually, we just need to come up with some designs. The template is more for outfit and color designs :). I'm not happy with his face but I'll rework it later.

A lot of the look of them came from your white dragon.

Shit, really? I just saw your update yesterday I think and I remember thinking "damn, that is just awesome! Look at those badass origami mech critters!" so to learn that it was partially inspired by my work is such an honor! I love how your art reminds me every time again to think outside the box and go crazy, I mean just look at what you're creating as a result haha.

Be mindful of the planes you pull out of figures, I think your Muusha character was pretty flattened because of the way you added detail. The line work in your recent sketches looks pretty good, it shows a lot of thought.

The mockups for the game (actually, not sure if "mockup" is the right term. "Thumbnails" is probably more appropriate). Waiting for my team's opinions.

Hmm, I think the mysterious setting could profit from some color that isn't purple, some blue maybe. The other ones have colored shadows/highlights or the sky behind breaks the monotony. All purple might be a bit bland and flat. Other than that I think you got the moods down pretty well, especially the friendly one. :)

Thanks guys! Eagle; you're right, I thought something was wrong with that purple setting but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Either way though my team's chosen for "dense" and "ancient" so I suppose it doesn't matter much now. Still, thanks :).

Hello Lhune,
Thank you so much for the invaluable crit. really appreciate it!
You draw very nice horses which is fairly rare , particularly the latest one has a real feeling of movement and energy.
I can tell you're a creature person. Cant think of any solid crits as i'm unfamiliar with creatures in general.
Looking foreward to see your progress!

I just discovered ArtRage, for those who don't know it it's a painting software that emulates traditional media pretty well. I downloaded myself the demo and experimented with it a bit and it's a lot of fun! Definitely going to play with it more in the future :). Also going to be using real oil paint this sunday for the first time, looking forward to that. Two quick studies and a walk cycle for the satyr guy:

Study of a glass of wine.
So, what I learned from this is that I should not underestimate the complexity of a glass of wine. Nor the frustration that arises when you have a delicious glass of wine right in front of your nose but you're not allowed to take a sip :|. Still, it was fun and useful, I'm definitely going to be doing more of these when I can.

The basic run-animation for the girl. It's not spectacular, but I've got a LOT of animating left to do for the project so I didn't spend too much time perfecting it. Done with Photoshop and ImageReady because Flash hates me and I hate it right back.

Adobe Imageready? :D
OH MY...
XD
But the animation is very nice (doesn't depend on program anyway, I was just surprised that you use a version of PS where ImageReady is still in it) :D
Is it for a job or are you animation student or is it just made for the kicks? ^^

May 9th, 2012, 02:33 PM
I'm a Game Art student and yeah it's for school, it's for a 2D platform/sidescroller prototype that me and my team are trying to build up and the girl is the one you're playing as :).
Doesn't every version of Photoshop still have ImageReady? I'm using CS2 anyway, perhaps it's the last version that does ^^.

that looks really cool! altho it looks more like a fast walk than a run, might just be caus shes so straight, and you lean forward more in a run.

So many lovely creatures. My absolute favourite is the white alien horse thingies with six legs. Just brilliant! It also shows that your beginning to get really good understanding on reflected light and effects of light passing trough thin skin.
Still, I think you would benefit from doing more observational studies. Drawing/painting from life, animal studies from photos etc.
Keep it up!

those thumbnails and landscapes are really beautiful. great work, i love it
on the stick-animation i was going to suggest being careful not to make the two paces with symmetrical limbs, as they won't read properly when they cross over (and it looks a little like the figure is always taking a step forward with the same leg) but it appears fixed in the full-figured one you posted.
edit* going back a few pages, i gotta say, your landscapes are really nice

School assignment, some textured balls. Failed with skin and chrome, admittedly didn't try too hard with chrome. Magma was a lot of fun though! Below that is the leap-animation for the girl satyr (unfortunately sped-up again, ingame it would be slower). Will do more Loomis tomorrow :).
