It's the "Other Dynamics" setting from the sounds of it, especially that it works when you turn pen controls off totally. Try just changing that opacity jitter setting. Having opacity jitter set to pen pressure means that unless you are constantly pressing as hard as it takes for your tablet to register max pressure, you aren't getting a totally opaque stroke at whatever setting you have on the brush otherwise, the brush strokes are building up to whatever the actual full opacity is.

First off, the effect that you are having is exactly why I like to paint with photoshop over painter sometimes. That being said, what you want to do to get rid of this effect is first, change the opacity of the brush to 100%. Next, in "other dynamics" turn off "opacity jitter" and change "flow jitter" to pen pressure. This will allow pen pressure of your brush but get rid of this over lapping issue.

Yeah, I have CS2 and experience the same thing. Sometimes it's rather frustrating, but from what I gather EVERYONE uses the same pressure settings, so I assume that it's just something I have to overcome to be a better painter.

op, watching the vid it looks like it' just photoshop working like it's supposed to. You've chosen a dark foreground color and are laying in low opacity strokes so each stroke that overlaps will start building till you get to that foreground color. Having opacity bar at 100 doesn't really do anything other than decrease the amount of strokes it'll take till you get to full opaque since you're controlling opacity with pen pressure. Painters brush engine is not built to build like this except for a few brushes so you won't encounter it there.

You'll basically just have to know the value you want to place and build to it. Like everyone else. :P
