Hey all, I just recently started a degree in 3D animation and game developement. Part of my goal is to develop my portfolio with a couple of projects while I'm going through school that will hopefully force me to not only use what I'm learning, but to use skills I may not be taught in school.

That said, the first phase of my path to success is to design an online comic. I have the overall concept down but the first step would be figuring out how to draw everything I need and be able to 'rubber stamp' the images and characters. My first question would be, does anyone have any suggestions for a book or guide to drawing in a detailed cartoon like style. I can't think of any examples offhand to be honest but a style that has simple lines but plenty of interesting detail. Titan AE might be a good example of what I'm talking about.

My second question is pretty open ended but I'm looking for advice on the best way's to develop my talent for drawing as I go along. any help or guidance would be appreciated.

comics are extremely difficult and they're deceptively simple. You have to know the figure and forms before you can expertly distort and simplify them. That said, I'd say try looking up a lot of different comics and see what you can learn from them. There's also questions of style and mixing different styles for various effects - see the different kinds of characters living together in say Bloom County or Liberty Meadows. A great book to read on the subject is Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud.

That said, do a bunch of drawing.
