October 20th, 2009, 03:11 PM
Hello, :mod:

Thanks for checking out my sketchbook. I appreciate all criticism, feedback, support, etc. I'm 23 and I've been drawing consistently for about 3 years now + the time I spent messing around as a kid drawing street sharks or any other scribble that could have a lazer gun strapped to it. My goal is to improve as much as I can and CA seems like a great place to foster that spirit.

Enjoy!

@karikaertan: Thanks man, hopefully there will be more to come.

@andres333: Thanks for checking it out, I appreciate it.

Heres some life drawing practice I did over the past few days. I need to do this kind of thing more often, its great practice. There were some things I couldnt get right, but overall it was a good exercise and something to improve on.

Hey, hows everyone doing?

I woke up this morning and did a few arm studies from Bridgman for the first time. I definitely need to do more of these cause its great practice and I've never really done it before... gotta improve!! :uzi:

Hey, I've been making myself do some studies over the past few days and these are a few examples. I read a couple bridgman books as well as Successful Drawing by Loomis and I tried to incorporate some of their ideas into these... must improve! :uzi:

Heres a WIP from tonight that started from a sketch I liked. The face will be redone and I still need to finish up his right arm and legs + enviro. Hopefully it comes out well, I like it so far. Please let me know if there are obvious things that need fixing other than what i've listed.

great stuff man. I like your lines. You have a very graphic style that uses a great spotted blacks. I also really enjoy your concepts. I would continue to study anatomy. The few that you have are pretty good. Get out and draw from life, that will really build up your ability. Check out these links.

Dr poPcoRN: Thanks for checking it out and there will definitely be more :)

IronFistGoon: Thanks for those links, thats some really good info. I try to draw people when i get the chance and I'll have to get around to it more often now that I've been reading up on anatomy a lot. Thanks for the encouragement, I appreciate it.

Heres where I'm at on the WIP I posted last. I think I'm pretty much done for now although I know theres plenty of room for improvement. Feel free to tear it apart, I wont mind :)

Izer: Details are my favorite part and sometimes I feel like it gets carried away. I'm glad you like it though and I'll keep up the studies.

Sanskarans: Thank you, those are very kind words and I appreciate it :) I have a lot to learn before I can begin to compare to many of the people who post here, but heres to learning and progressing!

Here is a Panda wearing Qing dynasty armor done partly for a competition on the League of Legends forums and partly just for my own entertainment. I have multiple steps saved if anyone is interested in seeing the progression, but for now I'll just post the final :) . I was really stumped on what to put on his banners because I didnt want to make it overly ethnic since its for a cartoony videogame. When I get a good idea I'll probably go back and redo the banners because for now they arent as rendered as much as the rest. Photoshop start to finish.

I love the panda. Very nice. I really like the black and white nude study you have there. it is rendered amazingly. Can't wait to check in again.

Hey everybody,

I finally finished something after a week or two of failed attempts. I guess it was just one of those off weeks, who knows haha.

Regardless, heres a b/w (obviously) drawing of a Hell's Angels rider. I got the reference from an online photo album (http://rideamoto.com/2009/11/23/the-glory-days-of-the-hells-angels-10999). The album has some awesome pictures in it and I'll probably use a few others for reference in the future. I believe the picture I chose for this drawing was one of Doctor Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson's pictures from the time he spent with the biker gang.

The problems I had with the drawing were that I made his torso a little too long and it was hard to make the biker vest stand out from the leather jacket. Its got its problems, but I still like it and I think its a move in the right direction.

Photoshop start to finish, wacom, etc.

@Ironfistgoon: Thanks for checking out my sketchbook again, I appreciate it always. The panda was fun to do, it was for a League of Legends character design contest.

I finally picked up the wacom pen again after a month long slump. Felt good to finally draw something again and I've started working on another project. Thanks for looking.

Maunty
June 9th, 2010, 03:51 AM
I did 31 sketches tonight off of the 30sec posemaniacs. I'd never done it before and I'm sold. The coolest thing was after I was done and looking back over the sketches and realizing that my approach from start to finish had totally changed. I know I need a lot of work on fast gesture drawing, but its also kinda nice knowing I've identified an area that I need a lot of work in.

If anybody is willing to offer any analysis on what I posted below that would be awesome. I'm going to try and do 20+ minutes of these a day for a while and see what happens. I just thought it was really cool from an observational standpoint seeing how the first ones were so different from the later attempts. cool stuff.

June 9th, 2010, 08:21 AM
What contest was that pirate for? :) Looks awesome :D

Maunty
June 9th, 2010, 06:15 PM
PendoX: Glad you like it :) It was for a contest over at the game-art group on deviantart (http://game-art.deviantart.com/) I won the past two comps they held and I'm donating the prize points I won as part of the prize for whoever wins the next one... so people should enter!

I did a bunch more (73) 30 second posemaniacs today. I really like doing these and hopefully I'll get better at it. Not sure if it took longer to do the sketches or scan them... I think ill do the next set on the ol' wacom.

:cheerleader:

PendoX
June 14th, 2010, 04:31 AM
I would enter if I was as skilled as you.. Since I started do some 3d I feel like my Intuos4 is going to waste :(

Maunty
June 18th, 2010, 09:45 PM
Pendox: You're plenty skilled to enter and besides, I've found that doing things specifically for contests is a great way to improve cause it teaches you to be creative within the predetermined focus of the theme.

I've never tried 3d, personally. I've always wanted to though. Is it just easier to use a mouse than a wacom for 3d programs? Intuos4... I'm jealous :)

-----------------------

Heres an update from today. 5-6 hours, ps:cs3, wacom3.

PendoX
June 21st, 2010, 10:58 AM
I gotta tell you, 3d is reeeeeeally fun :D Though it's kinda hard at times and nonetheless is it frustrating.
But about the contest thingy, it feels like you kinda have to be on a certain level of drawing to enter :P That's why I never enter any contests whatsoever.
But you may be right, when I think about it, it may be a pretty great way to iprove :) I promise, next time I find a contest I can enter, I will ;)
Btw, great work on the latest update

Maunty
June 22nd, 2010, 10:15 PM
@pendox: good luck with the 3d, I'll get around to trying it out someday :) Good luck on contests too and thanks for stopping by its always appreciated!

----

Heres a few posemaniacs from this evening. Not sure if I'm improving much yet, but its getting easier to pick out iconic parts of a figure than it used to be... just gotta translate that onto paper now :D

Maunty
June 28th, 2010, 06:05 PM
Hey, just posting some studies from today/yesterday evening. Theres some bridgman arms, some posemaniacs anatomy stuff and a couple loomis frames.

The torsos came out kinda loppy and scribbled since I was paying more attention to memorizing the muscles. Oh well, I'll do cleaner ones later.

*** After posting I kept looking through other peoples sketchbooks and I got inspired to do a bunch more Loomis studies... so thats what im doing now. I like rediscovering tips that I once knew and took into account and for whatever reason they slipped out of my mind. Specifically when Loomis talks about grounding the weight of a figure on a single point to establish balance. I think I need to keep that in mind more often than I do. I think fundamentals like that slip my mind because a lot of times when I set out to draw I say "ok, im going to focus on improving X" and while focusing on improving X I forget about other things I've learned along the way. Someday I hope to have all these things firmly cemented in my brain and all working at once in unison :) Til then....

Maunty
June 29th, 2010, 04:45 PM
I tried a study this morning of a photo of a cast. I like parts of it and dont like others, but had fun working on it. I'll probably keep updating this post throughout the day with new studies as I finish them. I think I'm going to move on to some Loomis for a while. Thanks for checking it out - any comments/criticism are welcome.

Hey, heres some quick 45sec posemaniacs from tonight and a loomis leg study from earlier today. Quick update for now. I was working on some other stuff, but i after a while it just got stagnant and i didnt fee like finishing it. That rarely happens... so, hmmm maybe I'll come back to it eventually. More studies in the meantime :)

There is some good improvement, try to look out for too much pure black and white in your finished pieces. It is hard to read some of the shapes in space if you don't light them correctly. Try to apply what you do while studying photography or referencing pictures to you fantasy character art.

Nice sketchbook. Your designs are really creative and awesome! Great job! The panda samarui is pretty cool. Good luck on your venture. CA really is a great place to improve. I've only been posting for a week or so and I feel like I've learned so much already.

Hey, wow July flew by. I went on a few backpacking trips, a week long family reunion and lots of other stuff. I was able to do some sketching, but I couldnt really devote much time to any one project. Now I have to make up for lost time... Heres some sketches from the past few days. I'm trying to work on the whole torso/hips/legs thing... lots of interesting curves.

Sans: Thanks, I was working really hard and then had a really busy month with a lot of time spent away from home so i feel like i got behind. The past few days I've been putting some solid hours in though :)

Onisan: Thanks for looking and I'm glad you see improvement. Sometimes I see improvement too, but other times I feel stuck. I know what you're saying about the pure white/black. I think I use it as a crutch sometimes :( I'll try and break away from that.

CGaddict: Thanks, I've been trying to improve my character construction a lot the past few months. The more I study the more I find out that I dont know haha.

loper42: Thanks for looking through it. Its always appreciated. The panda was fun to do.. crazy to think its almost a year old already. Time flies! I hope you stick with CA and use all the resources. Its a great place and I like to think its helped me a lot. Good luck and have fun.

Haha... Oh man... thank you for that word. I'm certainly guilty of that. I've always known that I draw way too many lines when im sketching really quickly... and I think "pet" is the perfect word for it. When I read that it put it in a new perspective. I'll try and work on my line efficiency more. Thanks again :)

Hey,

AChipps

I don't enter DA's contest. I have the kind of luck that would help a person not going by the rules win first place.
I draw with a mouse, and I created things in 3d, but there are two ways of creating an image, and that is to draw it, or create it in 3d. Drawing it is better, and faster, but once you get started with 3D you might do that just to give it a chance, and that can change things a lot. You can get out of practice drawing, and you always try to make better 3d images to equal your drawings or better. You can mix the two, but with drawing you don't have any limits to what you imagine, while 3D has limits to camera angles and what you really want. So you can stay with drawing what you want, there is a lot more you can do, unless you want to get into animation drawing a lot of images is a lot harder than with 3d. Maybe one day you might want to try it.
I think your art is fine. Keep up the good work or play which every it may be.

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my sketchbook. I was out of town all last week and hurt my wrist boxing so drawing has been hard, but I did a couple pages of quick sketches from reference. The reference were random poses from my DA favorites gallery. The last one is an edit/closeup collage of the last finished drawing that I posted a couple weeks ago.

Hey everyone, been busy with work and seeing family for the holidays. I managed to put this together over the past few days. I play a lot of League of Legends so I've taken a liking to coming up with alternate skin ideas for the characters. This one is an Akuma/Dark Hadou spin off of Udyr. The pose is referenced from one of Akuma's more famous images. Udyr shapeshifts to take on characteristics of various animals, including a Phoenix stance.

I tried some new brushes on this and I really like how it came out. i also tried to use more color and liven up my coloring. I think I had some success with that, but I know I can push it a lot further. Either way, I'll consider this one a victory for now.

Looks great Evan. You could work more on Akuma figure to bring out more realism for the character.Try working with painter software .You can mold it to give a 3d structure for the figure.

Try acrylics brush and scratch board tool .You can give a nice render for the image

Hey,

Here is some progress from today on the sketch I posted a few days ago. Im trying to spend more time designing her from the start rather than design as i go like normal. I'm still not sure what to do with her upper half, but probably some sort of a jacket since shes an airship girl and it would probably be cold up there haha. The thing shes holding will be a big harpoon with big bird feathers on the end and I'm going to try and use feathers in some other parts of her design to tie it together.

Anyway, thats some of my thinking so far. If you have any ideas let me know :D

**Edit: added color update to this post... will post the completed version later when I'm done. I cant figure out do do with the rest of the harpoon yet :(

Just continuing the theme it looks like haha. I've only worked on this one for about 2 hours so theres a lot more to do, but I wanted to post to show the progress.

Some more black and white study. I have a pet snake and looked at him for the basic shape, but all the scales and shading is from imagination.

I made the cat-thing have some qualities of a mask and I think I'm going to make the snake feel robotic.

I'm heading out of town for a few days so I need to finish this up by tomorrow or its going to be bothering me while im away.

Thanks for the feedback Sans, I tried to make this one a bit more complex to get some better practice out of it.

Hello CA,

Heres my morning warm up. I'm going to refine this one a bit more, I think. I've been practicing values a lot this past week so I'm hoping that practice will come in handy in making a good composition.

hope you all have a good weekend

Hey, worked on this for the past couple days and just finished it up.

I like how the mood turned out.

I used a waxy monkey tree frog as reference and created a monster from there.

Let me know what you think.

Hey, I disappeared for a few months cause I've been really busy with work. Heres a landscape from about 2 months ago and something I finished up a few hours ago. Wish this weekend would last a few more days :)
