I'm new here.. and I don't usually post artwork before I stick around and give lots of comments and help to others.. but I thought that this would break the ice, and be a way to introduce myself into the community.

I've posted this at Eatpoo, but I don't really get any comments from there.. just a few.. so I'm hoping that in this community I can get more suggestions and opinions :)

This is pretty imcomplete, but its developing. I'm a bit afraid this is a complete disaster.. I started off with a ref for the overall structure of the portrait, I then put in the lips and they turned out completely different from the ref - but I loved them.. so I kind of went on my own way with everything else. I don't think that was such a good idea afterall. I've only really worked on the lips, a bit of the nose, and one eye a bit.

Here's the most recent version:

I know its a bit freaky with only one eye, but I was having a helluva hard time making the other look good.

This is what I've put this portrait through during my progress:

The most recent of course isnt in that.

I'm just hoping for some tips that might help me before I go further and have no escape because theres too much detail. As I said before, mainly worked on the lips, then did a bit of the nose.. and now I'm working on that eye and hopefully the other eye. Oh, and I also tried to make a good neck but for some reason it looks so wierd no matter what I try. And around the eye - (since I know most people hate it) thats not black shadowing, its black eyeshadow that was smeared around the refs eye.

Well, give me what you've got. I dont have the ref scanned, never did.. but if its really wanted I will scan it (even though I haven't really used it much.

Thanks!

Oh, and bam close up (mostly what size i work at):

I've kindve realized that I need to fatten up the chin, and make it longer.. and hopefully I can update with that soon :D

being a self portrait and assuming a realism is the road you want to take....refrences are free gold enjoy :D use them and abuse them (not copyright wise)...my painting teacher said that 'your mind isnt really ready to produce excellent work without refrences and usually will have errors such as anatomy or composition' work with some refrences and go form their...also if you can post them so we can compare the two....
