Hi there,

I'll start some sketch thread here, with a number of things i drew and i try to draw and post some more every day.

Trying to capture more dynamic poses and learn faces. They all look alike too much!

Thats great, I especially like the very first and last one.

I really like how your sketches convey a lot of action instead of very static poses too :) How do you get those action poses? Was curious if you use a reference or from imagination (or I guess it could be both)?

Robolus - thnx, i like the soldier too.

Marie, thnx. I did most of these while i was away so i did not have much ref - for the soldier i did obviously. I try to visualise an action in my mind, something a character in a movie or story would do. Then i think of a nice camera angle and try to draw it.

I need to do much more life study - fortunately my first classes start in a week! I'm still trying to get back some skills in rendering and sketching, if i look at some of the drawings in this section i always find it remarkable that they look so crisp and to me my own stuff looks so 'worked' and like drawn with a blunt object :-/ Perhaps i need to draw bigger than A4/letter size ...

Nice to see you posting again. You´re still looking for historical roots, aren´t you? ;)

I like the last badge of clothing studies - the are quite consistent in character. The only figure that doesn´t fit completely is the one in the upper right. A longer Jacket or some cloth/gambeson under the breastplate would fit it better into row with the others.

A lot of the mannikins you´re doing are really good - sometimes you tend to use big heads (as I tend to use too big hands ;)) but that´s o.k. with me.

Hey Fipse,

thanx! yeah - mostly medieval influences. I bought a number of Angus mcBride books from osprey, they're really nice. Thanx for the tip you gave me on that one! I also have a costume history book now but that focuses more on later periods.

I want to be able to draw dynamic figures with dynamic clothing that;s why i need to practice a lot. I can;t draw any clothing really so now i just placed a number of copies of a basic body on a paper and i'm drawing clothing on that. Dynamic clothes come next!

And you're right about the heads - need to pay attention to that.

Cool studies man! Id like to work on my costume design skills myself. This seems like a superb way of doing it...very nice. =)

I have been so busy of late that i did not have much time to post anything ... moving into my new house, working, etc.

Here the first thing i drew after the Amsterdam Workshop, i started a new blank sketchbook. Seeing all the sketchbooks of the pros makes me want to have a clean sketchbook with only 'finished' drawings in it and no doodles, so i started this drawng. The proportions are twisted but i did 'finish' him somewhat ... The top part does not seem to fit with the bottom very much ;-)

Man that workshop was such an overwhelming experience...

Wow. I see an awesome progress... Amsterdam workshop musta been realllly gooood. I wish there was workshops in California.maybe in San Diego...um...maybe...heh?

The El Coro demo needed trying out after seeing him do it at the workshop. Coro you make it all look so easy ;-) to me it will be a lot of practice before i get control of it... if ever...

The ink is nice and the qualities of the ink and pastel crayons can make for all sorts of happy accidents. This technique certaily has many possibilities and great depth. I will definitely be exploring that, and enjoying it! My diluting alcohol arrives next week so that will probably help a lot.

More trial and error schtuff ... i like the center small head, the rest is a bit less interesting.

How do you do that?? I really wanna try that.. Has coro posted a tutorial or anything yet, or could you go over the basic steps? That looks fantastic.

Tnnx! I like doing it but i want to get so much better at that... I just try to follow El Coro's steps and try to have some fun with the drawing.

El Coro did post a tutorial in the 'featured artists' section -- you should try it's much fun! He is so good at doing this technique though it's really amazing...

your anatomy is very natural as well

I think you're highlighting with white too much in the color pieces. Highlights are rarely white in nature. But mayby you were just going for that look.

great sketchbook erik! you were so busy running around at the workshop, i didnt get to see any of your drawings. props on trying out coros technique, i can see youre starting to get the hang of it bit by bit...

Hey thanx Layil -- i did not bring much to show to the workshop anyway, i have so much to learn... but i love playing around with the stuff !

I had a great time at the workshop -- too bad i did not have much time to draw myself but i'll definitely go to the next workshops so that will be covered ;-)

hey man, you got some good stuff going on in here. the main problem i see with some of your sketches is where you place your values. you tend to put highlights in places where there wouldnt be any. try setting a light source and look at your image as if it was 3 dimensional.. .then plug in where you think the lights and darks will fall. keep it up
