I have this environment I've been working on for ..too freaking long. I keep trying to come back to it, but its like ... my mind is honestly in other places no matter how much i really want to get it done.
Environments tend to take me a long time because i put so much detail into them
Does anyone have advice for getting back into the groove?
Maybe its just today... (there is a bunch of drama in my house and its driving me crazy)
I listened to music that inspired it.. I have daydreamed about the scene.. Went and looked at other artwork for inspiration.
Honestly all I can do today is lose focus.
I really want to start new work. But no fuck I gotta finish this.
Thanks for whatever advice you have.

This probably has a lot to do with it. A bad environment makes for...well in your case a bad environment. :)
Lay it down and work on something else for a little bit. Come back to it after a day or so.

Oh god, yes. Sometimes thinking about a project that's going on too long actually makes me nauseous. But if it's gotta get done then it's gotta get done. If I'm having a bad day I put the music on, set a timer to one hour, and tell myself that all I have to do is work for one hour and then I'm free to do whatever I want. It's surprising how much you can get done if you narrow your focus to just one hour. And things get done, slowly, an hour at a time.
Some days are just total write-offs though. There's a reason why we have weekends. If you've worked six days, it's not terrible to take a day off and screw around or work on something else.

I find I can work from observation indefinately, but when I have to piece images together from photos, etc, it's very tedious. I hope as I improve (memorizing more forms) this will change.

Sometimes spending more time trying to find a way to reconnect with an art piece, waste more time than just grinding away at it and getting it done.
If you start over, or rework the painting. It might stimulate more interest. You might discover parts of the a painting you never thought of getting rid of. Or you can just crop the part of the environment that is working for you.
...walks are nice too. I'm a bit opposite. If my environment too comfortable, I can't focus.

Ooh yeah. Or I could rework it in a large thumbnail painting.

Put in an audiobook or movie. Sure, its distraction value might make you take longer to finish as a whole, but if it keeps you seated and working, it might be better overall.

For me it happens suprisingly often, then I just push on and the fun part returns. The hard part is to just keep pushing diligently on...
Art doesn't always have to be fun, easy or interesting...if it was everybody could do it.

I wouldn't really suggest this to others because they may take different attitudes, but usually if I start getting bored of a piece of work then I let my self wallow in that. Once I can accept that it bores the shit out of me....it sort of doesn't anymore. :S

Whenever I get bored with an art piece I usually take a 30 minute break. If that doesn't work I stop working on it for a couple of days while I think of a few ideas on how to make it more interesting and at the same time working on something else.

I have this sketch I did 30 years ago, maybe it's time to do something with it.
