Hello CA people! I'm Andrea and this is my newest attempt at keeping a sketchbook here. I just moved from Sweden to England to study games design; hopefully I'll get some good drawing/painting routines going and actually update this thread.
Any comments, crits, hello's and, well, whatever really, are appreciated!

Sargent study from tonight. Photoshop and I are starting to get along better - this one wasn't quite as painful as yesterday's painting.

Quick update with a portrait of the gorgeous and amazing Robyn (http://mixtapemaestro.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/robyn.jpg). I dislike it with a passion and I am only uploading it so I can look back and laugh it in the face at a later date. Also did some Posemaniac drawings, but I don't have a scanner and can't post them. Need some practise before I show them to the world though, as they aren't very pretty. ._.

Not bad my friend, I am sure you will enjoy preston, Just make sure you put your art second when it comes to games mechanics. Jim was giving me heat all 3 years long for it. I still managed a 1st though... barely:P Spite my might Jim! :D
BTW best way to be as an artist, never be hesitant to try out new things, most good artist stop being good, after they say to themself I don't use computers/wacom/tools aid etc.
I see this a lot in UNI; people having closed minds to new things. BUt as I can see your on the right track, and improvement is ahead for you my friend:)

Cold: Hahaha yeah, I'm already getting told off in the exact same way; "less art, more mechanics! *whip whip*"; we'll see if I'll make it through the games design modules... Thank you so much for the feedback and advice!
ditchman: Thank you :D
ALH: Danke! I feel the same way about the DSG camel thing colour, but I'm still trying to get Photoshop to love me... x_x
Alright, no update yesterday because I only did pencil stuff and I couldn't be bothered going to the library to scan it all. Lazy, lazy...! Here's a sketch I made tonight for another uni project, it's supposed to be my elderly, futuristic descendant! Gonna try for a traditional, painterly look and a very simple design. Hopefully I'll get it close to finished tomorrow since I have two more pieces to do for the assignment.

I like paint syle of the female body in #2. Also portrets are very nice (especially #4).
Good luck with the studies. I found it also difficult to maintain an online sketchbook. I started a week ago :) lets hope it will last longer than my previous attempts of one day lol.
I got your back to keep you motivated with comments :p
(Hehe i have the same misery with scanning, need to buy one in the near future.)
btw: i'm checking the bridgman's book, looks very interesting for reference. thanks

great work! I think the best one is the camel alien, but I think it's like a fusion of a camel and a rat.

Alright, an update on the old person portrait. Still need to do some serious tweaking and fiddling and moving things around and urrghhnn it's killing me...

looks nice, i like the first "young" version self-potrait. (but I guess it's also the way you look today)
comment on the old portrait, i have a feeling that the nose goes too straight down and that it stays at the same level as the forehead.
i think you need also to put a shadow between nose and forehead so it's more seperated.
but hope to see more!

will check later again :)

Whoosh no updates for a while because I'm a lazy bugger. Also I've been playing Dragon Age <3
Moosh, yyates05: Thank you :D
OutOfInspiration: Thank you for the excellent critique, I can totally see what you mean! Something's been bothering me but I haven't been able to put my finger on it, but you're spot on. Might go back and touch it up a little...
I haven't been very productive lately, but here are two silly pictures from last week.

your welcome, it's so hard when you need to improve your own drawings >_<

I think that skullmonster design is interesting and pretty original. You could probably develop that design further and make some pretty cool monsters. Those portraits look nice too. I’m not sure about the merging of black linework and painting in those though. Maybe tone down/remove some lines, they are too dominant right now in my opinion. Generally speaking though I think the combination of linework with more a painterly style looks good.

Hey there how´s your studies going? I bet you are to busy to post here anymore. It would be great if you did though. You are really good at painting and the anatomy is coming along fine. I wonder how your composition and environment skill are.
The happy bed picture is really cute by the way.

Wooooow it's been a while since I've posted anything here, been super busy with uni and yada yada. Will post a dump later but first up is a portrait I've painted up for my final portfolio handin later this month. What a bit of time and practice can do...
Thank you ditchman, OutOfInspiration, Bergulf and Frida for leaving such nice comments in my absence - I'm hoping post more from now on... Touch wood :s

Great works here, your values and colors in your paintings are very good. Try to find a more balanced mid-tone, however, should make rendering a bit easier for you. Keep at it!

NickyBeats: Haha cheers! Guess that makes us future co-workers :p My course is kickass, tons of work to do, good people and tutors who actually have a clue. Couldn't be happier :D
cgaddict: Thank you! Midtones are a bitch for me, especially when reworking these old-ish pieces... x.x
Alright, here's another old portrait on steroids. Just as the post above, on the left is what I happily handed in to my tutors in late October and the second image will be my final resubmission featuring my brand spanking new haircolour. I feel kinda meh about it and it was a damn nightmare to paint, but I'm at least glad I pulled through and finished it. Gave up on the likeness halfway through as well, which, I suppose, makes it a pretty shitty self portrait :P

Might as well throw in some work from last month as well; two portraits and character sheets for a fairytale project. It was super fun and I learned tons doing these, and I got some really nice help in the critique forum. Also wrecked my hand doing the lineart. The empty space in the sheets is for text :)

Great updates, really dig the Queen concept, very well drawn. Regarding the mid-tone issue, I think you should try to work in greyscale for a bit, then go back to color when you get a better control over it. Just a suggestion :) Keep it going!

cgaddict: Thank you! Aye, value studies are on my to-do list. Did the queen and princess portraits in grayscale first, but colouring them was a paaain :s
FourTonMantis: Cheers! Can't wait for some spare time, I craaaave Sargent studies x.x
Finished my final remake of my generation portraits tonight. Again, posting the old version too for shits and giggles. And I damn well hope I get good enough to start freelancing soon, need to save cash for a truckload of botox if I'm gonna look like that when I'm old...

Looking good! Really enjoy the lighting and color scheme here, very dynamic. The contrast on the skin is a bit high - try maybe starting out with a darker mid-tone and build the highlights slowly to define the form. With that said, you're definitely improving in terms of your painting technique, this is definitely one your strongest pieces and is very well done. Keep them coming!

I am most fascinated by your treatment of the ear here...
It's curious, because instead of resembling an older person's wrinkles, to me she (future you) looks more like she is made out of wood. The ear has qualities of a knothole, and we are reminded of springs-gone-by by the green leaf jewelry. I didn't read your intentions on the previous page, because I am stubbornly lazy atm, so perhaps this was all according to your master plans?
I do wish that there was some shadowing under her jaw that would temper the left-most neck wattle... Speaking of which, it seems that the leaf would be casting some shadow, too (just where it is touching her cheek, and then on her neck).
Curious clothes fashion you foresee for yourself, or is that some sort of rejuvenation chamber? :)
Of course, you've declared her done, so... no pressure. :teeth:
That youthful version is dazzlingly, robotically, pretty. You should include a snapshot of yourself for us. ;)

cgaddict: Thank you :D Good advice there, I'm usually really inpatient/stressed and rush things, I guess I should really slow down a bit.
William b. Hand: Hah, you're right! She does look wooden. Like this lady (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=950630&d=1270744927) she's a future ancestor, and obviously we're all environmentally screwed in the future which makes resources and general greenery rare (= golden leaf earring symbolising environmentalism and wealth). As for the clothing, there's no thought behind it at all apart from the rough stitches that show her general disdain of modern vanities and fashions. I bet it's organic wool. So the wooden look, although unintentional, actually fits. Thanks for the great feedback, I'll noodle around with it some more tomorrow, and thanks for stopping by!
Here's another remake from tonight; Tristran and Victoria from Stardust by the amazing mr Gaiman. Keeping the original versions to myself, because they are truly atrocious and would probably ruin the book for people... Her eyes are wonky and her ears should show, but the portraits will only be slightly larger than big stamps when printed so I'm just going to leave them a bit messy. Oh, and I'll put some kind of frame around them later.

Tiny update today because I've gotten nothing done arrghhh so stressed right now...

Nothing new today, just dropping some old stuff in here because I can. It should be in some kind of order.
This is pretty old, lolz folds and anatomy :D :D :D :D

Boyfriend again, same project as above only now as EPIC ZOMBIE HUNTER

And him again, a Gogh paraphrase gone horribly wrong (Chewbacca on acid, anyone?) but my man is kinda quirky and colourful and I did it very impulsively and quick in one short sitting, so in this case I don't mind the outcome one bit. I actually like that it's messy and far from perfect and not at all what I had in mind, if that makes sense... (but next time I'll make sure to do a proper study first, I promise)

Hoping to have some actual new stuff to show tomorrow, eek...
