I really like your work Sparth. I like the sense of atmosphere in your art. I was wondering if you would tell us which brushes you use (painter or photoshop). Do you just start with shape blocks and add color on top? It would be great if you would care to share.
Thanks :D

Hey man, nice 'bot! So tell me, is this the kind of piece where you just open a blank document and start throwing paint, or do you have a sketch to work off of?

talos72: most of the time, i use the regular photoshop brushes. 20% of the time i use custom brushes done by myself.
for the bot serie, i tend to always start to do a background first, adding a few forms, generally using light tones. a very abstract start, to be honest. then i paint the bot silhouette, with very rough forms, in dark tones, and with a very large brush. afterwards, i'll fix the silhouette in order to define the main parts of the object. (brush options: tool:airbrush - spacing:always under 5 - hardness:100% - pressure:25%)
concerning color: i guess nothing is really certain until the end, i try to analyse how the colors can give a good combination, instead of chosing definitive tones until the end.
the important fact is how the colors can interact, not the colors themselves. (no no ... i'll rarely use any flashy pink, or violet! :D)
however, it is nearly impossible to explain the method i've been using for the last two months, as it is pretty much a permanent experimentation and abstract approach.
a mix of layer combinations, color changes, silhouette fixing....
hope it helps.
sean: no more pencil sketches. in order to paint, i've decided to use only the wacom, without any drawing process. being more focused on the form, and forgetting about any line art. (actual period...., it will probably change later on)... :D
however i sometimes make abstract forms that i use to stimulate or emphasize the composition.
for exemple, i have done a few abstract compos, similar to the dreams i've added in the dream stream thread, and i use these for background mainly, or even for the whole image, it gives very interesting results.
for the speed paintings: i first make an abstract composition, on a layer within the image, and keep it aside, in order to blend it later on. same "abstract" process, but done faster.
i rarely (or quite never) use any photographic stuff, as it blocks me really.... i prefer finding all the forms myself, creating my own "abstract accidents and incidents"....

This one is awesome! I love how it looks as if it is emerging from the fog behind it. It's really cool. I always get inspired by your stuff. Awesome work.

Heh, thats funny. It sounds like your are working backwords in your new approch, but it WORKS because you stuff looks great. What ever the fuck works right? Keep it up.
I would like to see a robot that is easy to to understand. Get me? Like, the legs are obviousley the legs, and the arms look like arms... Basicly a strong concept as well as a dope painting.

damn! this one is especially good!
I really like working the way you describe too, just shapes and sillouettes (sp?). You just never know quite what will happen...keeps the process interesting and challenging; like a good conversation! Tho' I've never been willing to spend 3 hours on one...ack...don't think I could...
Never stop these...I/we look forward to 'em - maybe there should be a sparth "daily robot" section... LOL :D

For the past month I’ve been quiet and sitting on the sidelines checking out all the cool work that goes up here.
But I will be quiet no longer….
Sparth I must say that your robots rock. I’m humble in your presence.
