Hoy, all !
RECENTLY, I was invited to share my stuff at a local art gallery; The Open House is this Sunday (the Jan 25) and I'm starting to freak out a bit. You see I'm VERY inexperienced with this sort of thing. I'm one of those "You-touch-my-sketch-books-I-break-your-legs" sort of people. But the thought of someone actually BUYING something I did won me over. Getting paid to do what I LOVE to do was a mind-blowing concept for me so I jumped at this chance.
I have no idea how it works with most Galleries, and although the owner is a very nice lady, I'm afraid to ask her some of these questions just because I'd look like an inexperience git. She said her price is 30% of the sale. Am I supposed to have my pieces matted and framed, or is that the gallery's problem? Can I take classes on matting, because it seems fairly easy to do (that could be my ignorance talking) and it takes so LONG to send it somewhere. Does the artist usually submit the pieces he/she want to sell to the gallery or does the gallery usually tell the artist what kind of thing they want to see?
lol. So many questions.
The Art Gallery owner also commissioned me (my first commission!) to illustrate a certain scene from her friend's book as a gift to him. She asked for it in black ink on this expensive paper stuff (not sure what it's called). The piece is 14"x22" and she is doing the matting/framing herself. I have -no- idea what to charge the woman. It took me at least 15 hours. When we first talked about it she laughingly stated that I would get on her good side if I made it cheap. I just don't know what "cheap" is for a beginner.
I realize this must be a bit of a pain to reply to but I would appreciate any help you all can give me on these matters. Hopefully y'all can relieve some of this nervous tension I've had for the last week straight.
Thanks,
Nog
