Try not to smudge so much. Smuding looks good in some areas but if you do it too much your drawing looks bad. BTW, are you using JUST the conte crayons in the sticks? Or are your using conte pencils also?

Just the crayons and a normal pencil.
How could I get a smooth background without smudging so much?
