I wonder if anyone can help me

I am running 3ds max 2010 64bit and I am trying to render something out with a transparent background to use in AE.

How can I go about doing this?

Quicktime is unavailable in 64bit Max, and I dont know where to find these rpng files whatever they are.

Please help!

It's easy to save out from 3D max to After Effects, you just have to save in a format that has an Alpha channel as well as the usual RGB channels.

If you are exporting a sequence of frames for an animation, you will want to make a directory somewhere to keep all the frames together.

In 3D max, make sure you set the 'environment' bg color to black #000000
(rendering / environment / background color)

in your rendering settings window, under 'render output'. click 'files' to specify a filename and filetype to save as.

JPG will only save RBG info
you want something with an alpha channel, I use PNG format, some people are particular about using TGA format. I dont see much difference and PNG will be smaller.

render in 3d max:

If you're rendering a sequence of frames, 3Dmax will save them as
filename0001.png
filename0002.png
etc

now, in After Effects, to import these into your project, ctrl-I to bring up the import window, find your directory where you saved your renders from 3d max. Click on one of the files (any one, if they are part of a sequence) and then click the checkbox at the bottom that says 'PNG Sequence' and hit ok

After effects will import the whole sequence as a clip, even though it's stored as individual images. To adjust the frame rate of your clip in after effects, select the clip and hit ctrl-F to bring up the 'interpret footage' window, where you can set the frame rate and set it to loop a number of times if you need it to.
